Hopefully Karlovic can put it in perspective.

Yes, it's true he lost a match despite winning more points, and that sucks, but just two rounds ago he won a match despite winning fewer points. Yes, he lost a championship when he had championship points, but just last week he won the title despite championship points against him.

You win some you lose some. That's tennis. He's had a good two weeks, if he keeps playing like this he's going to have many more chances to win more titles.

Well, congrats to Gael on winning his 6th title and 1st at 500 level. It's his 1st title for almost 2 and a half years. It was a close run thing but, unlike on many previous such occasions, he had the guts to see it through. The greater seriousness and focus with which he has been playing this year has finally paid off.

But ouch...this one is going to sting for Ivo! He won't soon forget failing to serve it out when he had the chance and also failing to capitalise on a championship point in the tie-breaker. Still, he's had a remarkably good run this year considering he's the oldest guy still playing on the tour and has just won a title. Congrats to him as well especially for coming so close here too.

Many people are coming round to my point of view here - IT TIME TO CHANGE THE TENNIS SCORING SYSTEM !

It's bias towards losers like Murray who just fluke the so called big points ! Player who perform well under pressure should be banned. The player who can win the low pressure points should win ! IT'S NOT FAIR !

This winning the so called important big points thing needs to be stopped. The big points should not count !
Come on people, this nonsense is allowing useless players to win matches they have no right to

Who else is with me here ???

Did you know it is an actually a FACT that Federer is the player who has LOST the MOST matches despite having won MORE points in those matches. Guess Feds just can't win the big points either....
Just goes to show ....

Well done. Didn't realise that Thiem had been down match point in 2 of his title runs this year. :)
In Buenos Aires (clay), he had to save one against Elias and one against Nadal. In Stuttgart (grass), he had to save two against Federer. Not bad at all. :)

Klizan is the boss though, he saved a total of eight match points in Rotterdam, five against Bautista Agut and three against Mahut.

Hmm, I wonder if this changes anyone's opinion of karlovic being the best server of all time. It's one thing to be virtually unbreakable during an entire season, when you rarely play finals above the 250 level, and never reach the 2nd weeks of majors. This kinda shows how stats alone aren't always the best way to judge this sort of stuff. I wonder if Sampras ever failed to serve out a championship.

Oh, come on. Karlovic isn't Sampras in the ground game or net game. Not to mention the vast disparity in movement. Karlovic has to get down so low, to deal with a lot of these volleys. He saved the first 3 BPs with winners. The reason Karlovic doesn't make the 2nd week of majors, is because he is extremely limited, not because of his serve.

Lol...I remember all those match points Klizan had to save in Rotterdam! I guess all this is just more proof positive that a match ain't over until the umpire utters those 5 magic words, "Game, Set and Match ........"

Anyone who says Karlovic doesn't have the greatest serve in tennis history needs to have a serious reality check. Straight up delusional to think otherwise.

Great fightback by Le Monf. Would have been easy to let go after the 1st - or after the break in the 2nd.

So much for Karlovic matches being boring - and he not being able to play tennis. While I wouldn't want to watch him all the time, that match had plenty of good points and shots.

Karlovic vs Monfils: two guys with skills most of us do not possess, playing hard till the bitter end. Reminds me of what sports should be all about. I second the previous post.

The only way I can see that changing is you take away the 2nd serve. Only the first serve, What will happen is the game with shift to players that have good ground strokes.

I hate the fact that I could go see the match. I wanted to see Monfils win. Congrats for pulling off a win. The odds were against him, which probably allow magical tennis to happen. It is nice to see him turn around the match and win. This use to happen to him so much, which is frustrating as a fan to watch. Overall, good job to Ivo because he was ready to win and I love the contrast in styles. I love seeing a big man serve and volley.

Really enjoyed what I saw of the match, loved the contrast of styles. Karlovic is much more entertaining than people give him credit for.

Hi, you may have missed my slightly sarcastic tone. I believe changing the game as it is would be a shame.
Though I know, like you, John MCenroe favours dumping the second serve. I'd need to see as few top matches to decide.....

But I'm very happy that that flukeing Brit Murray loses to the Great God Nole - The totally unbeatable !

And they Both Bagel idiot serve bots like Raonic.

Whist the Fedalovic worship continues here - I will be happy ;-)

HATE MURRAY !

I'm so frickin' happy! Had to leave for work during the second set breaker. I thought Monfils was beat for sure.

Well done, my son!
