Raonic's resilience in the 4th paid off. Of course he got pretty lucky with 2 DF's from Federer, but sometimes that's what you need against the best. Many guys would've found a way to lose the 5th anyway, but Raonic took his chance and ran with it.

The big factors in this match have been:

1) Raonic has been playing extremely clean tennis. Incredibly awesome volleys and groundstrokes with few unforced errors.
2) Federer has not played the important/critical points that well.

That's quite enough for Raonic to take this match.

raonic actually had 40 UEs (including 11 DFs) ...so it wasn't extremely clean tennis from him.

Federer went into full auto-cockblocking mode in the wrong moments to get broken in the 1st and 4th, and that was it...

The 4th set was key. Milos served very well when down break points, not much Roger could do on those so not his fault there. However, the 5-6 40-00 game was inexcusable, that is what killed him today - although he wasn't guaranteed to win the breaker. Only he will know why he served the 2 double faults, over serving on the 2nd serve each time.

Sure Raonic earned it, but with a lot of help from Fed, that cannot be denied. If Raonic won the 4th set tiebreaker then for sure Raonic was the better man this day, but that was not the case. Fed was up 40-0 in that 6-5 game and 2 DFs? I mean WTF. Fed had him dead to rights in the 4th set and he just played quite casual through a lot of it, blew numerous more BP chances as per usual. Raonic great match, but Fed man, you gave it to him.

i'd rather him win another at the USO to be honest. But he has to stay healthy, play himself into form, and yes Djokovic has to lose again because Federer doesn't have the nerve to beat him anymore. Oh well...never count out a player of Rog's caliber but it's starting to get frustrating.

Stepped up in 4th and 5th when it mattered but generally it wasn't a great match either him or Federer played. Can also count himself lucky Federer got injured at crucial time.

See I would buy this. But Federer double faulted the match away when he was holding serve with such ease almost the whole match. He should've pushed it to a tie break and went to the final in 4. He even had chances to break. 5th set, his thigh gave in and his serve gave out but this should've been wrapped in 4. I would buy your statement if he was struggling the whole match. But he was dominating. With Djokovic out this should've been it. Perhaps it is time to admit I was wrong. Federer can play as long as he likes and I'll be thrilled but the final slam isn't really coming.

Whatever abmk. From my perspective Raonic played a very good match. People have been complaining about how these younger players aren't stepping up against the Big Four. Well Milos did that so give him some credit even if it was against an aging Federer. I never felt confident that Federer was going to win this match and posted that days ago.

This match reminds me of Becker's Monte Carlo final against Muster. Becker was serving for the match at the tie-break, and on his 2nd serve, he went for an ace but made double fault instead. He lost that match and never won a single clay tournament in his career. Federer went for aces on his 2nd serve not once but twice at 5-6, 40-15 in the 4th set, and eventually got broken and lost the set. This defeat is really tough to digest....
