Why does federer have a bad habit of hitting the ball back to the opponent when he has time to hit it cross court. I noticed this alot in his matches. It's dumb lol

Going behind your opponent is actually a good tactic normally and Federer does it very often to good effects. However, Raonic is not quite as mobile or fast as smaller players and tend to just stay where he was. Obviously, playing behind him was just like feeding him a BH shot. The problem is, Federer did exactly same thing not once but twice in a row in the 5th and got broken. There were a lot of bad decisions he made on court today. He could've had this easily. What can you do? Looking back, we didn't know he could recover this much and make this far at the tournament. We should just take consolation from the fact that Fed still plays like a top 3 player.

Why are people just ignoring the fact that Federer was clearly injured at a crucial point in the match? This clearly had an influence on the final result.

Was he injured against Cilic? Because he played really badly there. That has been the problem with him this decade-the odd piece of genius mixed in with mediocrity.

The 4th set was key. Milos served very well when down break points, not much Roger could do on those so not his fault there. However, the 5-6 40-00 game was inexcusable, that is what killed him today - although he wasn't guaranteed to win the breaker. Only he will know why he served the 2 double faults, over serving on the 2nd serve each time.
"Inexcusable"? Federer doesn't need to make excuses for anyone. Your analysing Federers game like he's an amateur. I'm sure you've never double faulted before. Would you like me to watch your matches and ask you to explain each of your every misses? He double faulted, big deal. Your setting standards for others that you could never meet.

With the mediocrity of players below him he still maintains a nice gap at #3. Don't expect this to hold true after Cincy and the USO though

I think his level should rise then though. Plus Cincy is faster these days so the serve shouldn't crumble as easily. I think we'll see a 2015 Federer for the rest of the season. He still won't win the USO but maybe Cincy and perhaps with a little luck the World Tour Finals.

i'd rather him win another at the USO to be honest. But he has to stay healthy, play himself into form, and yes Djokovic has to lose again because Federer doesn't have the nerve to beat him anymore. Oh well...never count out a player of Rog's caliber but it's starting to get frustrating.

It has been frustrating for a long time . The good times were 2003-09 and the tough times from 2010-16, almost equal periods.

But it is all a result of us expecting him to deliver ALWAYS given his past achievements.

One thint i will give raonic credit for. His body serve. His body serve was ridiculous. I don't understand why we don't see more players serve to the body. He was jamming roger.

A few thoughts on a rather dark day for men's tennis.
  • Federer should of closed it when he had Raonic in the ropes in the 4th set. Again, Roger becomes so passive when he's got break points it's not even funny.
  • I'm a bit concerned about Federer's health. Having the trainer look at his knee isn't a very good sign of things to come. Movement wasn't very good today, probably still tired from the Cilic match or the knee/back is now a real issue.
  • Lubijic might be in Federer's box, strategy wise, it was a complete failure. How many times did Roger get passed, or tried the flick backhand down the line only to see Raonic do the easy volley? Questionnable tactics. +1 JMac I'll guess
  • I'll give Raonic his dues, he outhit Federer from the back of the court, played some great volleys, great serve etc...Doesn't change the fact that I'd like to jam my wrist in his face. Sorry dude, but I can't stand you.

You didn't believe in anything from the start.

Because I'm realistic and have been watching what's been going on for the past few months. Federer coming back from surgery, little match play, played a long five set match vs Cilic, he has aged and declined in many areas whereas Milos has improved in every aspect of the game, is a hard worker and extremely motivated. I really don't know what some people were expecting. They were thinking more with their hearts than with their brains IMO.

I think everyone underestimated Raonic coming into Wimbledon this year. If he didn't get injured against Murray at the AO, he probably would have made the final then as well. I'll give credit where it's due, bravo Milos.

I can't be too hard on Fed either, 2 SFs this year, with losses to Djokovic, Raonic, Thiem, Tsonga, and Zverev. It is technically a decline but it's not as if he's ranked #30, he's #3 and consistently beats Murray.

Federer was 1/11 in break points.
And there you have the real point. For years Fed's return game on grass has been falling to pieces. This is not a new thing.

Raonic is now right in the sweet spot of the historic peak age for tennis players. Fed is many years past that point. Perhaps there are more older players getting further in smaller tournaments now, but the assumption that players will go on winning slams into their 30s is most likely simply wrong.

What puerile analysis. The poster is NOT a professional tennis player. Your analogy holds zero weight. It's immaterial what some hacker does on a High School tennis court, we're talking about Roger Federer here!

And "he double faulted, big deal" is more of the same nonsense. In case you didn't notice, Roger's back to back DF's cost him the match.

So close, but no cigar. Well done Federer. You fought hard. Just wish you didn't lose your serve in that horrendous fashion. Will always support you whatever you decide to do.

If he can get 3 semifinals for the 3 US tournaments that would be a great result and should seal his place at the WTF.

The points lost from not defending Cincy and US final should also cancel out with the points gained in Shanghai and/or Toronto

Look, Raonic won by breaking Fed 3 times, in each of those games Fed hit DFs in them, also failing to put away sitters TWICE on BP.

I'm pretty sure Federer would regard it as inexcusable...

I agree. In fact, I was convinced Raonic would be very dangerous at the AO this year, and I've been expecting him to push through. For the most part his return game has edged back a bit in stats, but in big matches he is getting more dangerous.

That said, I think Murray should win comfortably. If anyone on the planet can neutralize the Raonic serve on grass, it would be Andy.

yes Raonic did exceptionally well forcing those double faults in crucial moments. Hats off to him...he played with the grace of Sampras and McEnroe combined today. Nothing Federer could have done.

Are you being sarcastic?

Well done MILOS. That was very impressive.

Commiserations to all the good Fed fans out there @Firstservingman @nowhereman @NatF @Martin J @TheFifthSet and others I unintentionally left out. Your guy fought like a lion at this Wimbledon, massive respect for the GOAT.

Thanks mate :) was tough but I still have a funny feeling he'll end up with that nice, even number. It was his third tournament back and I sure didn't expect this.

Now, at least, I don't have to kill my eyes watching crappy streams :D

Whatever he did, he did his best.
It's not like he was thinking "oh, I'll ease up a little here and give him some breathing room".

We can't or at least definitely shouldn't abuse Fed for how he played.

Never count out Gramps, at least on grass. They day he retires, is the day he is done.

Nah, he's done. Too old. Time for Fed fans to find a new player to root for. Unfortunately nobody on the tour plays inspiring tennis anymore. Maybe Wawrinka if he learns to stop being such a *****

God, I hope so. "The grace of Sampras and McEnroe" is the antithesis of Raonic. All credit to this smug mug for defeating a crippled Roger today, but "grace" is literally the LAST adjective I would use for this mechanical robot.

Also wtf is the point of Lubacic (or however the f you spell his name)? He's lost both matches to Raonic with Lubacic in the box.[/QUOTE

Yeah, it's weird. It's turning into Berdych vs Murray. Berdych couldn't beat Murray after hiring his previous coach.

I hope Muzz destroys this drone on Sunday and I'm confident he will. Of course, I was confident Roger would win against Raonic in four....

I was also all the way up until the noticeable injury, the pace on his serve gone. Only then knew he was not winning.

raonic actually had 40 UEs (including 11 DFs) ...so it wasn't extremely clean tennis from him.

40UEs doesn't mean a hell of a lot if you have 75 winners. Does he need a 3:1 Winner/UE ratio for it to be considered extremely clean tennis? For me, I think 2:1 is good enough.

Federer didn't need to get injured. He should've won this in 4 sets. Hurts so much, yes, I'm sore now. I hope Roger is not carrying any serious injury. It took him such a long time to get back to his current form. Can't do that again at his age.

I will actually root for Raonic now for the title. We need a new slam winner for tennis.
