Suarez Navarro v Ostapenko in the final. Ostapenko won their only previous match 6-2 6-0 at Wimbledon last year.
Still, although Ostapenko is obviously a rising star, it must be a decent opportunity for Suarez Navarro finally to win her 2nd tour title. It'll be her 10th final. I'm not sure which she'll find more disappointing: her record in tour finals (1-8) or her record in major quarter-finals (0-5). Either way, she usually loses the most important matches. A good chance for her to turn it round and gain something close to equivalent to a Masters title. (Premier 5 aren't really an equivalent, because they're not compulsory. But it's close at least).
I can't grasp my mind around the WTA tournaments structure.
I couldn't for a long time, either, but I think I've got it now. It's basically like the ATP's, except that they break the Masters Series into two divisions and they label the tournaments differently. Here it is, as I understand it:
1. Most prestigious tournaments = Grand Slams, followed by the year-end championships.
2. ATP's next 9 = the Masters Series, all offering the same number of points, all bar Monte Carlo officially compulsory. Here the WTA divides into two: a) Premier Mandatory = four tournaments that are almost exact equivalents of the Masters Series, as they are compulsory events, b) Premier Five = a sort of lower-level Masters Series, equivalent to when the Masters Series wasn't compulsory. Between the Premier Mandatory and the Premier Five, there are nine tournaments, hence the rough equivalence to the MS series.
3. ATP's next level = 500 series. WTA's rough equivalent = Premier series (a lot of the confusion is because they have three "tiers" of Premier series).
4. ATP's lowest level = 250 series. WTA's rough equivalent = International series.
5. The ATP's challenger system and the 125 series on the WTA are also rough equivalents, I believe. I may be wrong about that.
Alize Cornet out for 6 months due to a back problem. Has a bone edema, bruised vertebra and back disc issue.
Ouch!
Yea she just pulled in her second title of the year. Impressive.Sloane wins the 3rd set breaker @ 5 over Domi for the Acapulco title.
Yup three titles in 6 months. If she could just get some more consistent results in the bigger tournaments she is going to be shooting into the top ten very quickly. If she can pull a round of 16 at indian wells and miami she might even get there that fastCrazy that this time last year Sloane had never reached a tour final. Something like 6+ tour semifinals including Australian Open semifinal. I remember watching the Stosur v Sloane match at the Citi Open where Sloane won to reach her first final which she went on to win. Just 6 months later and she now has 3 titles!
