Thanks to CSN's early loss, Roberta Vinci will debut in the top 10 next week. Who would have thought that would happen this time last year. This time last year she was 4-4 in 2015. Didn't really have much success in 2015 until May when she reached the final of a WTA international, then had 4 straight losses. In August she reached the QF at the Premier 5 Rogers cup and then of course reached the final of the US Open. Finished the year well with a semifinal at the Premier Mandatory in Wuhan and a SF finish at Zhuhai.
Top 10 debut at the age of 33. WTA really is ageing!

She's back!

Not really, just hitting in Rio. Still looks good though.

Seriously, what is it about the top female players nowadays that makes them so damn inconsistent? I remember when I started watching tennis in the early-mid '90s and back then you hardly ever saw the likes of Arantxa Sanchez or Martinez going out in the early rounds of top tier tournaments as frequently as you do now. I'm sorry but the likes of Halep and Muguruza need a good kick up the backside because their recent results do not befit a player of their rankings. Their coaches need to tell them to either shape up or ship out!

In their defence, Halep lost to Ivanovic, a former world number one who on a good day can beat any WTA player. Whilst Muguruza lost to Svitolina who might be benefitting from her recent hiring of Justine Henin. It sucks to see the inconsistency but it's not just the wta in 2016. Atp has been pretty shocking also, not to this extent but Delray saw Karlovic, Anderson and Tomic fall in the first round, Tsonga lost to some wildcard player in the 300s at his tournament and Nadals losing matches all over the place.

Garcia over Petko in straights. Errani over Brengle & Svitolina over Vandeweghe in 3.

Strycova takes the first over Ana in a breaker.

Meanwhile, the madness continues in Rio also.

Brazilian qualifier Paula Cristina Goncalves, ranked No. 285, is into the @RioOpenOficial QFs after beating No.2 seed Larsson 64 64.

Wow! Two young players face off against two veterans in the semis. I really enjoy watching Strycova (when she's playing well) and I really want her to win, but Errani will probably be the one to raise the teapot :(

Typical Ivanovic. Typical WTA, I would add. "Favorite" loses to "underdog" who then becomes "favorite" for the next match and loses to the "underdog" who is then "favorite" for the next match and loses to the "underdog" who is then "favorite" for the next match and loses to the "underdog", and so on and so forth. This also happens on a bigger scale from tournament to tournament: X player wins a tournament, is among the favorites to win the next, loses in the first round to an "underdog" who becomes "favorite" in the next match and proceeds to lose to another "underdog", and so on and so forth.

It's a beautiful pattern.

Absolutely true.
it's the main reason I try to just enjoy players (the brand of tennis they play) I like without investing in the result.
Life as a spectator would be easy if I were a Serena Williams fan (when she shows up) and enjoyed her style of tennis and court demeanor, I could invest in a winner.
Hey ho.
:(

Her talent knows no boundaries!

How could I ever doubt her?

Kind of like a more elaborate wooden spoon award :D

Just watched it (well, the bits that were on my center court recording). I'm disappointed but not surprised :(

Edit: Well, a little surprised at the bagel and Strycova's unwillingness to crowd in on Errani's serve.

Wozniacki loses the first to Konjuh, but the younger of the two is now spraying balls everywhere as if saying "please, I really want to play a third set".

Errani also in trouble, but Pironkova also doing her "please, I really want to play a third set and perhaps end up losing" routine.
