Welcome to the first event of the 2016 WTA Sudden Death League season: Australian Open

Current Rankings - League Rankings and Race

Rules of the game:

1. It's a knock out-system: if the player you picked wins, you're through to the next round. If she loses, you're out.

2. You can pick a player only ONCE. Obviously it's important to make smart choices in order to get far. If you have no picks remaining, you're eliminated from the competition.

3. You can't pick a player from a match that has started already.

4. You cannot advance to the next round via a walkover since it is hard to know exactly when someone announced they were pulling out HOWEVER this rule does not apply once you reach the semifinals

5. Since you can no longer win a match by a walkover it is highly advised that you make a back-up pick to your main pick - when listing your picks make sure you specify which is your back-up.

6. If the player you picked retires during the match, you're out. If she retires before the match, your back-up pick will be used.

7. NEVER edit your pick. If you want to change your pick, please quote your old pick and choose a new player. Edited posts will not be taken into consideration.

We will be picking 10 pick's for this tournament. Our schedule is..

Pick 1: round 1 top half

Top 4 players at the end of year rankings earn 1 free pass to use the following season. Our year end number 1 player earns 2 free passes. You can use your 'free pick' to advance if your player loses or retires during their match. All free picks must be used before the last 16 of the grand slams or last 8 of other tournaments.

1. PDJ (2 passes)
2. romeo8880 (1 pass)
3. JJGuy (1 pass)
4. bezs (1 pass)

I've added 3 new tournaments to the shedule for 2016 - Dubai, Doha and the Olympics - so we are now playing all the Premier 5/Mandatory tournaments and a few smaller ones to fill the schedule.

I've tweaked the scoring system a wee bit so that there is more of an incremental increase in points after each round and increased the points a wee bit in early rounds of grand slams and overall increase in some others.

Good luck, have fun and hopefully we do better than least year..:)

In please.
Does the free pass entitle you to pick again should your initial pick lose as in the atp sdl?

Not sure what the rule is in the ATP game but I'm thinking that you must use the free pick either to progress if your player withdraws during their match or in advance of a match that you are not sure of the outcome - you can't use it to progress if your player loses having played the full match.

does that sound right ?

In like Flynn.

I know next to nothing about the WTA outside of the top 20, but I can't possibly do worse than I have been in ATP SDL.

Just gonna go ahead and tentatively make my first 2 days picks because I'll be travelling to Syndey later this evening and won't land until Sunday.

Top Half: Genie Bouchard
Bottom Half: Caroline Garcia

The ATP is much simpler - basically if your player loses you can pick again. It's similar to 'a get out of jail free' card.
@TopDawg can explain it better.
if my understanding of your rule is correct you would still progress if your player retires, but I must admit I don't fully understand what you mean if "you're unsure of the outcome "?

Gonna do 2 day picks as I might not have internet in Italy.
Top half: Bouchard. BU: Gavrilova
Bottom half: Cornet. BU: Ivanovic

OK, we will go with that as well - you can use your 'free pick' to advance if your player loses or retires during their match. All free picks must be used before the last 16 of the grand slams or last 8 of other tournaments.

PDJ you have 2 free picks to use throughout the season.. (maybe we should increase the numbers for next year).

I think 2 for the winner is enough and 1 for the top 5. I think more, even though I won, would be too much of an unfair advantage.
And I think your revised rule is great: much simpler to understand and easier to implement.
Cheers.
