How close was Federer to his peak from 2017 AO to 2018 IW?

Matches won: 92%
Big Tournaments: 92.98%
Grand Slams: 96.15%
vs top-5: 100% (7-0)
vs top-10: 84.21% (16-3)
vs top-20: 89.66% (26-3)

No matches on clay, but 2019 proved he's still good on clay too, losing only to the RG finalists.

Lets see....

AO 2017-Good but not peak level. Very rusty at times. Berdych match was perfect and the Zverev match those were clearly at peak level IMO. Rusty in parts vs Wawrinka and the first 2 rounds. Nadal match was up and down it was not until the last set and the 3rd which Federer played close to his best tennis.
Dubai 2017- Donskoy so no lol.
IW 2017-Peak level no need to explain.
Miami 2017-Good but a little rusty he nearly lost to Berdych and Kyrgios and was clearly less sharp than IW.
Halle 2017-The final vs Zverev was peak level. Do not know much about the rest.
Wimbledon 2017-Rusty start he should have lost a set or two but good ending. Dimi and Raonic matches peak level and the final hard to rank due to injury of his opponent.
Canada/USO 2017-No. Back injury and sloppy form effected him.
Shanghai-High level save for the Nadal match and the last 2 sets vs Del Potro not peak level.
Basel-High level but not peak.
WTF 2017-No lol.
AO 2018-Good but not peak. Shaky in parts of the Berdych match until he cooled down and against Marin he looked when Marin started hitting fire in a period from mid way to the 4th to early in the 5th.
Rotterdam 2018-The final was certainly peak level.
IW 2018-No. Choked in the final and nearly lost to Coric.

Overall a high level but he set the bar very high in his peak years on all surfaces. Some peak matches here and there not consistently like he used to. Only IW 17 peak level. Most of the rest had fairly frequent matches of some sort of prime level save for WTF 2017 and the Canada/USO 2017 period and Dubai 2017/IW 2018. And of course skipping clay helped Federer as well and not having a prime Nadal on his tail like he did in some of his peak years. And 2015-mid 2016 Djokovic not being around as well as we saw how that went 2 years before.

And Federer did well on clay this year but in the end he lost in straights. He pushed Nadal harder in 2005-07 losing 4 close sets each time. This year he lost in 3.

Real intent is to show how much Federer enjoyed Djokovic sabbatical from tour?
Had he faced and beaten Djokovic in that period and Nadal would have been injured you would have said but no, he beat Djokovic but he took advantage of the fact that Nadal was missing.

If he beats Djokovic and avoids Nadal, he was successful only because he avoided Nadal

Not quite considering it is coming from Lew.. You would always know what he would actually be targeting at..
So you agree there's an ordre du jour behind this?

Would you also agree that this new development affects the validity of the underlying argument?

His somewhat lackluster 2017 late-summer to fall season brings my opinion down a bit. Event by event:

AO: Excellent clutchness, but he dropped a ton of sets along the way.
Dubai: Lol
IW: Peak level; no excuses.
Miami: Solid overall level even with a tough draw; struggled a bit against Birdman and KyrGOAT but both played really well so props to them.
Clay season: ...
Halle: That final vs. Zverev was some pretty GOATworthy stuff; overall high level
Wimbledon: Hard to rank because while he did drop zero sets along the way, he wasn't at his grass court best imo and could have lost one or two sets. The Dimitrov match was a beatdown though.
Roger's Cup: Injured but still made the final; go figure.
USO: Not very good. Two five setters in the first two rounds and went down rather unceremoniously against Delpo.
Shanghai: High level for the most part.
Basel: Same here too.
WTF: Nope.
AO 2018: Good level all around but he got a very safe draw; you saw what happened when Cilic redlined for just a little bit later in the final.
Rotterdam: Nice performance, especially in the final
IW 2018: Meh. He should have won, but he was still a few notches below his 2017 version

Based on this, I'm willing to rank this stretch as 85% peak level (I voted 90%).

Voted 90%. A few lows (backerer at USO swing, YEC/IW18 muggery) but some peaks too, AO Berdych match, IW 17, Shanghai final, Halle final etc.

Definitely better than 2014/2015. Not quite at 2004-2006 level.

I had to settle for 110%. The real question is why is 200% left off the poll options

No. @Bender and I were most definitely serious. In fact we were so serious that we didn't even realise that if a player plays 10% better than their previous 100% then that '110%' becomes the new 100%.

You know how everyone says that fedora used to play such effortless tennis when he was younger? That’s because he wasn’t putting in enough effort.

Now that he’s using a bigger racquet with a higher twist weight, he has to put at least 110% effort more than he used to, bringing his current level to 110%.

He also lost in 3 sets when he was young in 2008, so it's not like Federer losing in 3 to Nadal at RG is an indication of weak form.

I mean, you can argue Federer is not in his prime for being 38 years old nowadys, but not for losing in 3 to Nadal at RG.

2008 Federer was in his prime at slams but the RG final was off for his standards.

I felt bad for Federer in that one. He was so close but couldn't finish the job. He's made the last 5 IW finals but only won 1.

I am actually extremely furious at roger for blowing so many finals there.
Apart from the defeat by Nole in 2015, federer had more than enough chances in 2014, 2018 & 2019 finals...

That one I’m not particularly upset about because it was Delpo.

Do you actually realise that it was the match that vaporized all the confidence from the resurgent federer? It was an epic choke which put an end to the neo federer, everything went downhill & things didn't get partially back on trach for 11 months or so. It proved to be a fatal blow on the mental & tactical resurgence federee had forged since January 2017, the conquered mental demons came back & the "go for broke" approach was all but shot......
That loss is up there in the list of some of the worst losses of Roger's entire career, and actually extremely underrated. He was never the same afterwards.

Didn't Federer himself tell us that he was at his best in 2018? So wouldn't that lead us to assume he'd say 110% (out of these options presented)? And 100% for 2017, again just an estimate.

No he did not. The only thing he said was that a 37 year old should not be the favourite to win a freaking Slam.
