Tennis TV interrupting this match to give me some of that classic Fed Cup excitement with Mary Carillo.

It's eerie how they always know just what tennis fans want.

Well, you can't have a Jack Sock match, without Mr Socko.

By the way, why does Federer choose receive in a tournament where it can be decisive if you win a set 6-3 or 6-4?
cuz he's as dense as they come, failed math every year at school, needs his wife to even tie his shoes, and has an inner dialogue about as rich as the sparkling of a dead channel?

j/k, no need to care about games when you're so arrogant that you expect to win every match.

Probably because he wants the early break due to nerves. I think the first thing he thinks about is actually winning the matches. If he does that the set scores take care of themselves. Being knocked out on game percentage is such a relative longshot that I'm pretty sure it's one of the furthest things from his mind (and yes I'm aware of the Murray 2009 scenario).

A. fed is dense
So the answer is B

He didn't look like he failed in math during that WTF 2009 Del Potro RR match though...I am sure Murray would agree. :)

A lot of UEs from Federer, proving he is not peaked yet. A lot of pressure, but Sock holds well. Federer to serve to stay in this set.

I hate these long games.
Has to be said that with Milan scoring the first set would have gone 4-2 to Fed, but Sock would have gotten him to deciding point twice. 2nd and 3rd set would have had tiebreakers. Federer would have just broken Sock in the early 4th set this last game.

It seems Federer is struggling with the big hitting from Sock. A timing issue, which will improve as the tournament goes on.

Sock must have been listening to y'all's poasts because he's flattening out his forehands and pounding them into Feds's backhand until that side breaks down.

From today’s perspective we would laugh about it, but back then Murray was a real threat for Federer and the H2H was 4-6 if I’m correct.

So you could very well have a point here, BUT how the hell did Federer calculate the percentages if it’s true? It’s not a simple plus/minus calculation for games. Did he use a pocket calculator during the changeovers?

I remember myself being aware of the situation during the 3rd set back then (Del Potro needed the 6-3), but only with pocket calculator and not in the heat of a match myself. Even the commentators had no clue until the very end.

Fed dominant on service games, but needs to play better on return games, esp. break points.

Sock played well , esp. considering it was his 1st match at the YEC.

You know, the good thing about the server slow downs that are afflicting the site is that only the die hards that are determined to say something are willing to post. A thread like this would normally stretch 20 pages or more and be full of trolling, hyperbole, excessive handwringerering, and one- or two-word replies. It's quite refreshing :)

Fairly straightforward and pretty much par for the course for Fed in the opening match. He seemed extremely confident he'll win - even Sock seemed somewhat resignated in losing this match. Sock didn't play badly, has a good serve and a good FH to back it up, but he was never winning this.

Do you really think anyone cares about this? We'd probably have 2-3 TB's in this match with the kiddy scoring system, which is why only kids play it...

And pretty good net play.

For a first RR match that was a bit of a mismatch since nobody expected him to actually lose, it might only reach 5-6 pages, but I understand your point.

And as I was saying: "Relax people. Federer hasn't even lost the set (let alone the match) yet." And so it proved. He won the 2nd set despite many gripes about his uselessness on BPs. I understand the frustration actually, but the truth is he was still likely to win the match either in the TB or in the 3rd set even.

Good result. Not too worried about Fed's less than stellar form; I can't remember the last time I saw Roger play a great first RR match. He was really cagey in big moments and that's probably due to adjusting to the conditions as he alluded in the on court interview. The BHs to break in the first game were lovely though, and were all that was necessary in the end to take that first set. He was then dominant on serve despite not serving amazingly and won the breaker in the 2nd. Really should have won without one though, but for passive high margin shotmaking on BPs and Sock not choking.

With serve like that he doesn't need great return skills too much.

he's not a Karlovic or Isner, even though he has a great serve.
So he does need some good returning.
And he has great return skills, so might as well use them.

Good win for Fed. Second set was a bit scrappy. Hopefully, he won't be a victim of the hype, Tignor's curse, and hater's desires.:D

It’s not hype by saying Federer can win the WTF. That Tignor curse is crap because he has picked Federer for other events and Federer has won. Federer knows what he’s doing. You don’t win Sportsmanship awards by being a cutthroat a$$hole when defeating your colleagues.

Pretty boring match on the whole even though both played well.

How about giving some credit to the opponent?:p

I stick with my prediction.
Federer and Sock first and second in this round robin.

You have to forgive my fellow Fed fans, they want Federer to pummel his opponents. I guess winning the match is not good enough especially when people want to see a good match.

0 BP for Sock in this match ...

Only in your dream world Sock wins a set against Rogi
Wasn't saying Sock would have won. O BPs in this glacial form translate to zero breaks in the more manly no ad system. Still would have had more deciding points and two breakers rather than one. Milan 1, WTF 0 so far.

Just one question - are you going to be bringing up that kiddy tournament throughout the WTF? Even in match threads? Because right now you are downright obnoxious and close to being intolerable, massively overhyping every single aspect of low-quality level tennis played by little boys rules.

It’s been really difficult trying to get used to the Nitto layout, I know it’s still blue but the font is really distracting...

Man, Sock was DECENT. Not much, not less. Federer was quite mediocre with a lot of errors specially in the second set. As usual, his serve took him out of problems losing basically nothing in his serve games
And dont let me talk about Sock choking with a huge double fault in the TB. He played decent, but I think a good match by Sock maybe can force a third set. Of course, IMHO

I may post a comment. Just read and move along rather than trying to censor people's views.

You are a bundle of joy arent you?
