Missing my support. :p

He didn't know he needed it - until it was gone :p

This is a bad matchup for Thiem, so a near 100% Goffin tough. Thiem looked sharp when Goffin was not pressuring him. Odd match so far.

Quality players playing well on HC are a bad match up for Thiem ;)

Awesome shot to take the set from Goffin!!

Thiem having so much trouble with Goffin is truly sad. What a terrible waste of potential.
He's just not that good and never will be. I can't believe his fan base actually believing he's going to be #1. And his habit of talking to his box after (literally) every single point makes Murray's looking-at-my-box obsession seem tame.

Why would a player with zero originality, who stands on Mars to return serve and who's sole "strategy" is to hit every rally ball at maximum effort ever make a dent in the game? Watching him play indoors is painful he's so unimaginative, totally the anti-Fed.

Goffin is way more talented and the better player, his small stature just makes it so much harder to get much higher than #10 in rankings.

Thiem is a dingbat, no question.

But I think he DOES have plenty of ability, much more than you’re giving him credit for. He doesn’t use it though.

I am not saying he should abandon Gunther, but if Thiem wants to improve outside clay, he needs to add a new figure that can take his game to a new direction.

It's just history repeating itself. After clay season, Thiem is an average to 50 player.

The mental aspect is the main reason Goffin leads the H2H 6-3.
This is mental/coaching. Goffin to me looks like he's not putting 100% effort except when he smells an opportunity. Thiem unfortunately seems to be matching his general motivation level.

Thiem has been mailing it in/lazy for all of 2017. Before this year he rarely did this. Hopefully he'll wake up here.

Sure, he has ability. So do Dr. Ivo, Donald Young and Berdych and they never will win majors either. Serious question: what impresses you about Thiem's game? Do you think he's mentally strong? Do you actually enjoy watching his style? Curious to know.

When he’s not completely got his head up his a—, yes, I enjoy his physical warrior working class style, and I USED to think he was mentally strong. But it appears more and more to me he’s just phoning it in.

Regardless of circumstances, you don’t do some of the things he’s done without being very skilled. But he has regressed and is like a huge disfigured lump of clay.

I 100% saw this coming. Can't believe that Thiem was the odds on favourite before the match began when he barely even beat Busta.

From the moment Goffin defeated Nadal, I knew he had the best chance to qualify for the semis because of his match-up advantage with Thiem.

Haha. Thiem is just finding out now that Goffin is just fine. Feeling better; had just changed league pick to Goffin in 2. Goffin simply can't be that bad with Davis Cup coming up in a week.

Yes, good for Goffin (and Belgium) and now it seems what I was wanting while watching him play the Cilic match (Goffin beating him to a pulp to smack some sense into him - maybe) is becoming true. So embarrassing I must say. And so silly of me to think Kneeffin was that hampered and now it's Thiem's chance to finally get a clean victory.

Tim Henman on the BBC:

"I’m not sure what Plan B would be for Thiem but, as is the case for a lot of these guys, it’s about doing Plan A better."

Thiem needs a new coach. I keep saying it.His progress has stalled. He needs to shake things up while he still has some good years left. Before you know it, he's 27, 28, and we'd still be here saying the same things.

Most of these guys have no variety and subtleties in their games. Thiem would need a new coach to try and instil that in him I think.

I think so too now.
Bresnik has worked really well with him on the fitness side of things. That's why he was relatively beastly during the clay season and managed to beat Nadal.
But now it's time to level up - he can handle the grind of the tour, now he needs to hire someone who can show him the way forward as a top player.
