Big, big matches for Thieminator at WTF. He has wins over all these players and has never met Nadal on hard courts. If he beats Dimitrov later today he'll likely play Nadal next (or Goffin should he beat Nadal today.):
RR A Dominic Thiem (AUT) 4 Grigor Dimitrov (BUL) 6 2.62 1.50 H2H 2-1
18/2017 R16 Madrid Masters Clay Dominic Thiem Grigor Dimitrov 4-6 6-4 7-6(9) 1.50 - 2.62
52/2017 QF Brisbane Hard Grigor Dimitrov Dominic Thiem 6-3 4-6 6-3 1.66 - 2.10
8/2016 QF Acapulco Hard Dominic Thiem Grigor Dimitrov 7-5 6-2 2.50 - 1.53

Brisbane was a great match for both players and Thiem has improved considerably since that match while Dimitrov has had a more up and down year, but is back close to his Brisbane level. Thiem has a chance to win this despite Dimitrov being the betting favorite with a very strong chance of finishing 1st or 2nd in group B. The surface should suit both players as this seems back to normal WTF speeds and slower than Paris 2016-2017 and WTF 2017. Should be a great match.

Thiem in Brisbane 250 is still the hardest and most dynamic pure hitting I have seen the whole year. The guy just does not pick his times to peak unfortunately and is still learning strategy :(

I'm going to go out on a limb and say Thiem wins this in 3 just because it's Dimi :)

Could be a very enjoyable match with Dimi approaching the net hitting junk to Thiem's backhand and receiving some ass missiles via the Thieminator's extensive weaponry :o

His last gasp with the impressive power game was against Goffin. Totally gassed after two sets at the Auz Open. The serving to get out of 0-40 triple set point was amazing in the 2nd. Thiem emptied the gas tank into the tiebreaker with first serves averaging close to 220 kph. He's dug himself out of a lot of holes with serving this year, but never quite like that and the ground game has become much more calculating and defensive.

@SpinToWin probably remembers Brisbane well. The "Wall of Chaos" that is peak Dimitrov took shape in his match with Thiem and carried him to several titles and a near Australian Open final where he probably would have beaten Fed. Things have come full circle for both of these players and nothing would please me more to see both of them come out of Group B in that kind of form.

May they have a clash of titans worthy enough to make the false god question his chances should he make the SFs.

*Rope-a-dope* would be an apt way to describe that match. Maybe Thiem has changed his approach since then but if so he's gone down the wrong path. He can play smarter tennis without standing 15 feet behind the baseline. I hope he tries something different at these WTF's.

Dimi in 3.

I don't understand why people are underrating Thiem so much. If his serve and forehand will work well then he has the game to beat Dimitrov. It is a big IF of course. But last year Thiem played pretty well in WTF.

Mixed bag in a way and Monfils seems to be his pigeon. Monfils has gone on some injury layoffs after playing Thiem the last two times.

Thiem might be interesting this year at WTf if the courts are a touch slower than last year. Thiem had a worse year last year coming into WTF so maybe he does the unthinkable. I'd love to see suddenly clicking Thiem get through to Federer and Zverev.:D

Aargh. I used to be able to watch that, but no more.

Thiem looks ready for a good thrashing based on that first game.

Needs to serve well and take his chances, Grigor can have lapses. He's been rushed off the ground early on, needs a shorter take back o_O

27% of first serves in...awful serving from Thiem generally, luckily he's got them in on the big points so far.

He's having some problem with his toe but that shouldn't be the reason.
Honestly this flatness in so many matches started at the beginning of 2017. Thiem used to always be motivated for his matches. This year has been very shaky and not immune to these funks even on clay. His footwork looks like he is walking around lol.

Abysmal 1st serve so far for Thiem at 33% with 2 DF at 2-3 on 1st set. It was more exciting to watch some of the Next Gen match so far.

Thiem is so damn aggravating and frustrating to watch. At this point I’ve given up. Tired of seeing him waste his talent and potential like this.

Castle just called Thiem graceful - I think he's confused about who Thiem is.

Castles an idiot tennis commentator. The sort of guy who says how wonderful every player is rather than properly assessing their game.

How can he say Thiems turning into an all court player, he's a baseliner and plays exactly the same now as he did 12 months ago.

He meant all-surface player but both are ridiculous :D
