Arrogance probably. He had the weakest group imaginable, probably thought he could walk over Goffin & co (choking experts) and grab some easy 600 points. But as soon as the little Belgian put up some unexpected resistance, Nadal's knee got injured in record time.
Oh come on.
I'm no fan of Nadal's game, but all this talk about him is really winding me up. It's the same nonsense that really ticks me off when people talk about Federer ducking Nadal on clay or feigning injury or whatever.
IMO Nadal just hates not competing. He was here because he wants to compete, he wants to play and he wants to win, and he thought he would be able to. You can see that it drives him and all this small-minded and callous snickering is really off-putting.
It's sad to see a great champion miss an important event with injury. Unfortunately I think it's effectively a consequence of his style of play, so it was more a question of when rather than if. But I'm sorry for his fans that they go through this again.
Good-natured ribbing is one thing, but what a sad life someone must have who enjoys winding people up like this. Pitiful.
