Gah, catching the tape on set point sucks..

Wanted to get it over with a bit quickly maybe, but then it's his bread and butter.

Tightened up a bit again on that backhand.

Strange backhand to go for after working so many forehands and Ruud gives up the error DTL and now AR has set point and serve.

Kills it with the forehand does Albert Ramos, who claims the first set 8-6 in the breaker...

Albert Ramos my bad.

I thought when Ruud went for that crushing FH on SP he'd take it but it clipped the tape and sailed long.

Small margins there, bitter to go from 6–4 to 6–8 naturally. Bit tight on those last points given the occasion, but he also showed great fortitude to get to that point in the first place.

Solid effort of a set all things considered. Big test to come regarding whether he sticks at it or goes away after this.

More interesting for me really, especially as I've barely seen him.

ARV was merciless with that killing FH to take the set though. I thought the killer was that mysterious sudden DTL BH from Ruud which just tamely gave away a free point at crunch time in the breaker.

This is the best I've seen him play. ARV has hard hitting ground game that is keeping Casper from dominating with that forehand plus very nice coverage. Hopefully he calms down here.

I'd say he is pretty calm. He surely is frustrating ARV at times.

Ugh, that's the worst that could happen. Closing out that game would make this a completely different scenario. Hard to see him get back into it now.

Looked like Tomic in that game :(

Very disappointing - and surprising - to see him give up like that
Its not the first time. And not the only player to react like that after a close TB.
The best players don't do that, and soon he has to break that code to start beating high ranked players.

FFS another overhit BH:mad:

It's definitely prone to that. Something weird technically about that I can't quite put my finger on.

He doesn't need it to become a killer given the forehand he already has, but making it a more reliable shield and set-up shot would do him wonders.

Exactly what I see. The harder ones coming back with interest with ARV.

I don't understand these decisions to try to take the harder DTL shot so often with the BH so early on.

He didn't comeback against Muzziah with a nothing game.

The Muzziah AKA the Redeemer AKA the Lord Himself is on holiday, still in some cave he was supposed to come out of at the end of Easter. That guy who played Ramos was his disagreeable twin brother the Bin Man Bum...
