Yes, a lot of rash and almost panicky decisions in some of these points, which makes little sense given that it's not like he's being completely outmaneuvered in normal rallies.

Teenage syndrome.

Right now, he is playing and looking like a teenager.

Extremely poor choices at the moment :(
He's doing pretty well except for some of those backhands. Should have been bringing more heat with the forehand from the get go in this match. Its his only way to overpower ARV.

I like where Ruud's game appears to be headed. A lot of these mug DTL bhs will be golden in the future in setting up his beefhand.

No no no. He is tactically very sound. The last 15 minutes, he has done everything wrong. No patience, poor shot selection. Looks to me like every cell in his body has given up this match :(

2 weeks ago i trained on the court next to Ruud. As i managed a dropshot then half volley backhand lob winner that landet just in, he put down his racket and applauded me, clapping.. fun.

wowz, that's very cool! Must've been a decent couple of shots.

Yes, he has to wait for a chance on the fh side. Instead he goes for jumping backhands, droppers... No patience.

Even when he was on his way to winning the first set, I wouldn't say he showed patience in getting there. His shots might generally work well on clay, but from what I've seen he doesn't play a clay game yet as he gets after so many balls and presses with risk, and that was also the case in set 1.

Damn, at work, just reading about this, but hopefully it recorded at home and I'll be able to review at home.

I've seen this kid play before and I really like his game. Looks like a very tight match.

What do you think you're Sampras all of a sudden!? lol

Aw well, well done Ramos, and solid effort from Casper. Shame it had to slip just as he got the break back...

Hopefully another learning experience for the Ruud Express.

ARV the devil with that lob.:( Great match.:p

Amazing defensive lob to be sure (and a bit lucky to have it fall right on the line of course)

Saves one match point with patient aggression.

Can he do one more?

Unfortunately not. I thought he had it...

Testing lob by ARV but Ruud still had it on his racket but it just wasn't to be.

Clearly, I need to see more of Casper. I'm not overawed on this showing regarding his natural sense of the game on clay but I see a lot to like in terms of his developing package.

Not the best net advances in that game. Well done. This match really could have been something if Casper had won the first.:D

It was the same for Struff. He just needs to primarily push and spin with the backhand. This isn't junior leagues.;) Delusions of grandeur on the backhand crazy; he rarely damages on offense with that shot againt better players. Maybe work on dtl backhand, but his may be a bit spinny for that.

For me the biggest takeaway was that Ruud seemed to think that he had to be better than was actually needed.

I don't think he played a calm match.

Remember, a calm Norwegian is equivalent to an English football hooligan. Reckon Magnus Carlsen is calm? Check his Norweigian interviews.

Heck, Ruud basically smashed 2 rackets given his mental display today.

I actually think the slow contitions favoured ARV more, because of his great defence.
It allowed both to defend well. I think Ruud should have been much more offensive today on forehand for the whole match. Normally he can dissect lesser opponents, but ARV just hard hitting from both sides and the defense. ARV Top ten player on clay atm so no shame with this one.

Heh he broke back in crunch time:rolleyes:, but the coaching team failing on his backhand. He needs to calm down on that shot and just defend. He's given PCB and ARV nice runs for their money. I believe his return game is getting better; can't wait for Munich where Zverev is top dog in the draw.:D Glad you got to watch him today!

He broke back when he calmed down in general. He was a hot mess for the first few games of the 2nd set. You watch between points the body language of the players? Don't be fooled by that Norwegian bravado.
