The pasty Edmund says clay is his favorite surface, but who can deny it when he was the only player to take a set from Nadal in Barcelona. Edmund's club of choice is his hard flat forehand. Thiem will be feeding Edmund with a similar diet of high rpm balls.

Thiem in 3. Thiem likely to be caught sleeping a bit and the Edmund forehand is just the weapon needed against Thiem. Thiem in 3.

Really looking forward to this one. Hopefully Thiem doesn't get lulled into playing too much defense, like he's prone to do. As much as Edmund's forehand is the talk of the tennis world right now, his backhand is quite the sturdy shot as of late. It'll be interesting to see who manages to execute their game-plan effectively.

Haha. Got "pasty" from one of the commies last week and he doesn't fit the bill as a typical clay courter. I guess you failed to notice one of the pictures was of Courier who was another red head who also did pretty well on red clay.;)

Even if Edmund doesn't prevail today he's a good benchmark as another serious heavy spin clay courter lost a set to the pasty one. We all know about Thiem and its time for him to put out at Barcelona with a minimum SF run and clash with Clayray.o_O Edmund is the most dangerous roadblock before the SF for Thiem.

No way does Edmund take Theim out. Edmund chokes a lot. Heck, he couldn't even take out Donaldson when he was up a break in the second set at IW, which eventually caused him the match.

Match of the day def. Ed's FH will earn him 1 set but he seems cant stay cool in long rally.
Voted for Ed in 3 BTW.;)

Sometimes you try to visualize the matchup with one players shots crashing into the others. I suspect Edmund will find the harder hitting and nearly as heavy Thiem a bit harder to boss than Nadal in their 2nd set who was getting on the defense and spinning short some of the time, etc. I've seen Thiem take some bad losses against lesser players and usually it involves them serving out of their mind and loving the Thiem ball (matchup issue where they just play great against Thiem). Goffin is probably the weakest player that is not a big server that troubles Thiem. Pouille handled Thiem nicely last Fall. Its hard to imagine Edmund winning this match unless Thiem comes out flat and loses the first and then somehow donates another game in the 2nd. It could easily happen, but I'll be surprised if Edmund is able to fire a consistent barrage of forehands at Thiem for much of the match;Thiem just has too much firepower of his own. If he does, Dominic better buckle up.

This is Thiem's specialty--a clay 500.

Unless he starts overhitting again, I say Thiem will edge this one out.

Love hold for Edmund and he levels it at 1-1. Kyle is excellent at punishing anything short or mid-court, more so than most IMO.

He has the mindset and the forehand to work those sorts of tactics. Edmund is constantly looking to finish points with his forehand, so far he's executing well.
A sure way to success. You look at the greats, and most of them did this efficiently. I'm liking his game at the moment too.

Great play from Thiem, blocks the 1st serve back for the short angle, Kyle comes forward on the backhand dtl, but Thiem responds with the cross-court forehand pass. Deuce.

Kyle does move rather well on the clay right? Loved that huge step into the slide, executed that running forehand dtl pass perfectly.

Thiem anticipates the inside in forehand from Kyle, and is there to hit the running cross-court pass. 30-30.

Unlucky netcord for Kyle, and Thiem has BP.

Wow, how unfortunate lol. Thiem's return skids off the baseline, and Kyle whiffs the forehand. Thiem has the double break for 5-1. Edmund a bit too erratic right now.

Edmund's power looks to have been just the shock to the system Thiem needed; Thiem must hit with plenty of power or he's toast against Edmund. Holds for 6-1.

Edmund can win this if he just tightens up his game; 95% of the power and more patience perhaps. Thiem is far from blowing him off the court.

Kyle could work the point a bit more definitely. Thiem with the same amount of errors, but double the winners. A lot of it to do with Thiem's patience. Slightly disappointed with Kyle's backhand today as well. Thiem does have the break for 3-2, 2nd set.

Time for Thiem to make a run I reckon. Clay is his domain. Looking at this draw he really should be getting to that SF matchup with Murray.
