The pasty Edmund says clay is his favorite surface, but who can deny it when he was the only player to take a set from Nadal in Barcelona. Edmund's club of choice is his hard flat forehand. Thiem will be feeding Edmund with a similar diet of high rpm balls.

Haha. Got "pasty" from one of the commies last week and he doesn't fit the bill as a typical clay courter. I guess you failed to notice one of the pictures was of Courier who was another red head who also did pretty well on red clay."The pasty Edmund" ...c'mon now![]()
Sometimes you try to visualize the matchup with one players shots crashing into the others. I suspect Edmund will find the harder hitting and nearly as heavy Thiem a bit harder to boss than Nadal in their 2nd set who was getting on the defense and spinning short some of the time, etc. I've seen Thiem take some bad losses against lesser players and usually it involves them serving out of their mind and loving the Thiem ball (matchup issue where they just play great against Thiem). Goffin is probably the weakest player that is not a big server that troubles Thiem. Pouille handled Thiem nicely last Fall. Its hard to imagine Edmund winning this match unless Thiem comes out flat and loses the first and then somehow donates another game in the 2nd. It could easily happen, but I'll be surprised if Edmund is able to fire a consistent barrage of forehands at Thiem for much of the match;Thiem just has too much firepower of his own. If he does, Dominic better buckle up.Match of the day def. Ed's FH will earn him 1 set but he seems cant stay cool in long rally.
Voted for Ed in 3 BTW.![]()
Love hold for Edmund and he levels it at 1-1. Kyle is excellent at punishing anything short or mid-court, more so than most IMO.
A sure way to success. You look at the greats, and most of them did this efficiently. I'm liking his game at the moment too.He has the mindset and the forehand to work those sorts of tactics. Edmund is constantly looking to finish points with his forehand, so far he's executing well.

Its a game of inches luckily. Here I am fawning over Edmund's game, and Thiem is up 4-1.![]()
Yes, it's been tight. Nearly 30 minutes so far.Its a game of inches luckily.![]()
Edmund's power looks to have been just the shock to the system Thiem needed; Thiem must hit with plenty of power or he's toast against Edmund. Holds for 6-1.Thiem anticipates the inside in forehand from Kyle, and is there to hit the running cross-court pass. 30-30.
Unlucky netcord for Kyle, and Thiem has BP.
