Brilliant defensive slice from Thiem, Kyle's volley drifts just long. Adv Thiem.

Great hold from Thiem, saving BPs again. Leads 4-2.

Thiem holds with big raking cross forehand. 4-2. Edmund has dialed in his game better now.

Kyle really just a break away from being right in this match. Very close this set with Edmund holding easily and Thiem on the ropes in last service game.

Another easy hold for Edmund for 4-5. That one long Thiem hold looking critical; Edmund asked the questions, but Thiem answered with serving display.

If Edmund were to break here almost feel he could win the match. Its been close.

Promising first couple of games has turned into a comfortable win for Thiem. Just the superior player on this surface - anywhere really.

Love hold by Thiem. Great match from both. Edmund got to 6 BPs in this match, but Thiem slammed the door on all of them. Closer than the score shows.

Thiem is out of the gates nicely in Barcelona taking out a game Edmund. If Thiem had not been playing well, Edmund takes this match. Edmund says he loves clay. If so, he should really play even more. The extra time really allows Kyle to hit his groundies. Just a bit more seasoning and he'd be very tough.

Edmund really announced himself in 2015 Davis Cup final, he had won a challenger on clay shortly before and he was put in for the first singles rubber against Goffin - took the opening 2 sets before losing in 5.

He says its his favorite surface, so perhaps he should be vulturing in SA and in July? Despite the score, feel he's not far away. The Nadal three setter was no fluke. That forehand can hunt on clay.

Maybe, something to consider for sure. Though to be frank I can understand why the early clay events in SA wouldn't really attract him :p

Tennis can be cruel, you lose the big points and the score can look ugly, despite being relatively close in rallies and making chances.

Especially true on clay where a small edge can get holds and many breaks. Its one of the things that stops clay from being a grueling surface as often their a lopsided sets in a match. No shame whatsoever for Edmund in the first.

Lol,at first I thought it's "Thiem to come out"
One of the many meanings possible with this title. Intent was would Thiem show up and play a good clay match out of the gate. Could also be taken as Thiem to be put out by Edmund. And then of course your mind can be in the gutter.;)

Thiem delivered and should have manageable matches from here on out. Thiem has gained another small advantage. Its possible that play might have a tight window tomorrow and some R32 matches could be delayed until Thursday. Could be telling if Murray or Nadal forced to play two matches in one day.

Thiem should have even more of an advantage over Mischa or Evo I feel, and unless Clayray proper shows up things looking good right now on his side of the draw:p
