He's lucky he was already so far behind. Also lucky he's 17, so people will go way too soft on him. What happened was hilarious, but his decision to do that was completely ********.

I completely blame the Canadian Captain for putting in such a Young inexperienced player in the Deciding 5th rubber in World group Davis cup match.................... Shapavolav had no business playing in this rubber against such a hot up and coming experienced player from England..

No one is nicer or carries themselves better for a 17 y/o than Shapovalov. Everyone can see that today was an accident. Can happen to anyone
No tweet yet from Pospisil expressing concern for the chair umpire. Did Shapovalov mean to hit the umpire? Of course not. Could this happen to anyone? Nope. Only someone who in anger recklessly hits a ball at a high velocity in a crowded stadium.

Raonic had no business pulling out. Can we blame him instead?

Ouch... Poor umpire. Really don't expect to end your shift like that do you. Let's hope no damage done aside from a full on shiner!

Chair umpire Arnaud Gabas has bruising & swelling of the left eye. He is going to Ottawa General Hospital for precautionary evaluation (1/2)

Fingers crossed he will be okay. I hope this will serve as a suitable warning for every player on tour to control themselves no matter how frustrated they may be feeling. Many players have done this but have been lucky that no-one got hurt. Now we have our first example. Luck like this can easily run out with awful consequences.

That's going to shine in the morning.

A shame it had to end like that, maybe with hindsight the Canadian captain should have gone with the more experienced Polanski.
Roman???

Oh, you mean Peter Polansky. He's healthy enough to be in the draw at the SF Challenger after retiring 1R AO vs PCB. In hindsight, I guess he could have been an option.

why did they play a super tie-break instead of a 3rd set in the SRB-RUS dead rubber ? i didn't know it was allowed... o_O
lajovic d. kravchuk 6-3 4-6 10-2
(at least it appears like that in the live scoreboard)

good (and unexpected) win for darcis over the young zverev !
would have been painful to lose after his "mistaken celebration"

yeah, a little odd, but not just Pospisil...a lot of players coming out to defend Shapovalov, but not mentioning umpire

Oh man. That's going to be a major blemish for Shapovalov.

He's going to face some serious consequences from the ATP and possibly Team Canada for upcoming matches.

That's going to be a tough pill for him to swallow.

'Soul Eviscerated' no doubt ! Poor lad. We all do stupid things...

Look at Dan Evans in the background LOL

I seriously suggest that for the sake of health and safety regulations all umpires should wear full protective head gear for all matches from now on....

May I know why is Fognini playing the decider and not Seppi who is in way better form ? Going out after being 2-0 up and having MP in the doubles to make it to QF ?

Fognini thrives on adversity, I can recall him down 2 sets a few times and coming back to win.
Though my friend Guillermo Vilas would never let this happen to him in Argentina !!!!!
