Another big tennis tournament.

Lots of big names:
Top seed is Kerber, 2nd seed is Pliskova.
Remaining seeds: Cibulkova, Radwanska, Muguruza, Svitolina, Vesnina, Strycova, Wozniacki, CoCo, Stosur, Bertens, Pavs, Garcia, Vinci and Poots.
Heaps of good unseeded players: Jankovic, Puig, Zhang, Makarova, Osaka, Kasatkina, Kiki.

Popcorn 1R matches:
Puig v Shvedova
Wozniacki v Kasatkina
Peng v Tsurenko

Potential 2R matches:
Jankovic v Kerber
Makarova v Cibulkova
Kiki v Pliskova
Stosur v Zhang

Errani was the defending champion but withdrew due to injury, her points already came off and she'll be out of the top 90 come Monday.

Many other withdrawals: Halep, Bouchard, Bacsinszky, Cornet, Kuznetsova and just now, Konta.

Kerber can become number 1 again if she wins the title.

So, who will win?

This tournament is a week later then last year so the points have already come off, the points that will come off this week are for Premier 5 Doha last year. Suarez Navarro will lose 900 points as she is out of Dubai with an injury. Ostapenko will lose a bunch of points as she was the finalist last year. Petkovic and Radwanska will lose SF points.

Petkovic has a live ranking of 53rd in the world, if she loses all of her SF points, she'll fall to about 86th in the world. Yikes.

Draw change:
Konta has withdrawn
Poots now the 17th seed.

I would pick Pliskova, but she is likely to be a little tired and she has the more difficult draw. I went with Kerber. Even though her results have been lackluster, I expect her to peak in this stupid tournament just so she can take number 1 from from Serena

Quite a few matches playing today (Sunday). Also they probably should've clarified, Stosur isn't playing Zhang Shuai, it's some other Zhang 1R. Zhang Shuai is likely her 2R opponent. Confusing yes.

Hmm:
Former world #15 Aravane Rezaï of France returns to pro-level tennis at ITF 15k Macon next week.

You'll remember Rezai from her stunning run at the Premier Mandatory Madrid Open in 2010 where as an unseeded player, she won the title by defeating: Henin, Koukalova, Petkovic, Jankovic, Safarova and played an amazing final against Venus.

She also had top 10 wins over then number 2 Sharapova, then number 1 Safina.

Wow, Qiang Wang knocks out Ostapenko in straight sets. Ostapenko was the finalist in Doha last year when it was Premier 5 (swapping with Dubai). So basically she was the defending finalist in a way. She loses 585 points and will fall next week from 34th to about 69th in the world.

Stosur takes the first over Zhang.

A win here would push her up to 17th in the live rankings after tomorrow. (She'd overtake Azarenka and Suarez Navarro as she withdrew and was the defending champ (in a way)).

Only has 120 points to defend at Indian Wells, none at Miami, 55 at Charleston and 180 in Prague. And then May she has a **** ton of points. But she's doing well to win points, a top 16 seed would see her not face a top 10 player til the 4R.

Also, Hingis playing with a Chan sister again. Don't tell me Hingis has ripped apart a good team?? I'm guessing CoCo dumped her from doubles once she reached the AO SF and was like "wait, i'm not THAT bad at singles, screw doubles".
The other Chan sister playing with Shvedova.

Last years Dubai QFist Zheng Saisai knocks out Arruabarrena in 3.

Sevastova wins in straights over Begu.

Osaka up a set on Chang.

Makarova up a set on Zhu.

Buyukakcay in a tiebreak against Golubic.

Siegemund finally wins. Snaps her 8 match losing streak and defeats Soler-Espinosa 6-7 6-4 7-6 in a 2 hr 57 minute match.

Check out their H2H. Three matches prior to this one: 2005, 2010 and 2015. Two of them involved a player getting bagelled or breadsticked yet going on to win the match.

Other results:

WC Barthel knocks out Jankovic
Kristyna Pliskova knocks out 15th seed Vinci
Osaka knocks out qualifier Chang
Golubic wins over Cagla
Jabeur defeats 14th seed Pavs

Wow, Poots blows a 5-1 lead against Bellis and it's now 5-5. She's had 3 set points on Bellis' serve but couldn't convert.

She won 5 games straight but has now lost 4 games straight..

Edit: 5 games straight. Bellis up 6-5 on serve now.

Peng thrashes Tsurenko 6-1 6-1.

Puig over Shvedova in 3. Had a questionable MTO apparently and played fine straight after, but it's legal so...

Wow Konjuh thrashed Zhang Shuai 6-0 6-1.
Konjuh now faces Stosur. Winnable match for Sam. If she wins over Konjuh she'll overtake Azarenka and jump to 17th in the world.
She'd then face either 8th seed Vesnina or Doi for a spot in the QF. :D

Has Azarenka said if/when she's coming back to the tour?

She also got fat as sh*t there for awhile.
You ain't down with the thickness? Hard to expect any results from her at this point though. Especially if her fitness level is still in question.

If Snake wins her 2nd tournament in a row that would be a helluva start to the year for her. As long as she can keep up these performances at the bigger tournaments, especially the majors. I'd like her to win at least one, but hopefully a bunch.

She's trying to join Hingis & Henin as Doha/Dubai double winners since '01.

And Rezai was more than just thick. Think I've posted a YouTube of her elsewhere, I'll try to dig it up.

Why is Pliskova "snake"?

Makarova won the first set 6-2 over 3rd seed Cibulkova but Domi is up 4-1 in the 2nd.

Bellis won the first 7-5 over Siegemund.

Vesnina won the first 6-2 over Doi but Doi is up 5-3 in the 2nd

Puig won the first 6-1 over Garcia and it's on serve 4-5 in the 2nd.
