Kerber is really #6 in the world. she just got lucky last yearKerber loses. Again. Part time player at no.1. Still.
Wozniacki gets so much grief for her tenure at no.1 but at least she won tournaments. And played a full schedule.
And how many years on (?), still challenging for titles. More so than those who've been touted as the next big thing over the last few years.
Fair play to her. She'll probably never win a major, but at least she has name recognition.
And keeps plugging.
Kerber is possibly the worst no.1 to have won 2 major titles. I can't think of another?
I had created a thread to question this and many people attacked me for asking the same question. For the year results, she doesn't look like the worst No1 (though close) just because she won two GS but Jankovic and Wozniacki are more consistent over the span of their career. Kerber used to be a mental case pre-2016 in big matches and finals. That Kerber seems to be back but only time will tell if she can snap out of this funk.Kerber loses. Again. She had a great year. And has shown little sign of coming close to repeating it. She's been better than average (the average being her competition) prior to that. And thus far, the pressure of reaching no.1 (albeit briefly in the scheme of things) has seen her barely able to string wins together this year. I don't know what her overall tournament performances have been this year but I think it's pretty substandard for the player that started 2017 as #1.That is one hell of a lucky year to make three Slam finals, as well as the Olympics & Tour Finals.
I recall the thread ( a good one) and think I said she deserved to be no.1 for 2016 (although that was in doubt should Serena Williams had entered the WTF as she stated she would) but that I thought she'd struggle to retain it this year. I didn't expect it to be quite so quickly.I had created a thread to question this and many people attacked me for asking the same question. And how many of those tournaments was her first match the round of 16?Kerber: 7-5 in 2017.
Brisbane QF
Sydney R16
AO R16
Doha R16
Dubai SF
Sydney and Doha. And how many of those tournaments was her first match the round of 16?

Are her results better than Wozniacki this year?so who are the 5 people who really are above Kerber right now in your mind then? I can see arguments for 3 people, maybe 4 if you were to make a stretch.
Serena
Pliskova
Muguruza
Cibulkova (this is the stretch argument but she started 2016 ranked 38th and went on the win the YEC and finish 5th in the world)
who else? Radwanska? Kuzzy? Halep? Keys? I can't really place Kerber any lower than 5th because her results. while honestly not on par with last year so far, are still not any worse than several others currently in the top 10.
Obviously getting to no.1 and winning 2 majors is great. I'm just asking if she's the least accomplished to achieve this. Please offer an example of some one you consider weaker. We have two noted Angie haters here going back & forth, one of whom actually thinks Aga is better. Last year probably got her in the HOF, but now it's chic to jump on her when she hasn't repeated it.
The worst #1 with 2 Slams? Boy, that's a terrible title to hold. How about the thousands upon thousands of players that never sniffed either?

As for the Kerber debate going on, she probably is the worst #1 with two Majors (Austin, Mauresmo and Azarenka have had better careers), but she is far from being the worst #1.
Check Road Singles list. Of course it's only been two months and Kerber can recover but so far I think following players performed better.
S.Williams
Ka.Pliskova
Konta
Svitolina
Wozniacki
I ignored V.Williams, Lucic-Baroni, Wandeweghe for their 1 tournament success. Kerber is currently No.9 in live Road rankings.

@PDJ was talking about #1 players with 2 Majors. I ignored Petra as well as Kuzy, Na and Pierce because they never got to world #1.Where do you put Petra? Everyone likes her, but she hasn't done a ton off the grass.
Exactly. But two Wimbledon titles is pretty impressive.@PDJ was talking about #1 players with 2 Majors. I ignored Petra as well as Kuzy, Na and Pierce because they never got to world #1.
Anyway, when we rank players I think it's better to use term least impressive than worst, because we are talking about amazing career achievements here.
USO should be interesting. Will have the old gang of top contenders back in the mix (Vika, Petra and Maria).
She's not doing much worse because it's much of a muchness. And that's not good to ignite interest in womens tennis. We can dress it up any way we want, but interest is waning. And, quite frankly, rightly so.yes for the last 2 months she has played poor tennis and hasn't lived up to 2016. I'll openly admit that, but compare her results to many others currently in the top 10 so far this year and she isn't doing much worse. Based on that link, of the top 10 in the race, only 5 of them are in the current overall top 10. So its not just Angie who isn't doing well so far in 2017. Serena, Pliskova and Konta are the only players currently in the top 10 who are ahead of her in the race. Svitolina may be top 10 soon so she will be 4. She's doing bad so far this year, so but is half the rest of the top 10. Kerber stands out more because of what she achieved last year, but Cibulkova, Kuzzy, Halep, Radwanska or even Muguruza haven't been leaps and bounds better.
take in the whole last 365 and I can only see maybe 4 people who can be argued as overall equal to or better than her in the last year as a whole. for 2017, shes in the basement right now and needs to get it together or she will plummet down. But she hasn't because most of the rest of the top 10 is doing just as bad.
We're hoping that but only Sharapova will be ready if she has worked hard enough during the holiday.USO should be interesting. Will have the old gang of top contenders back in the mix (Vika, Petra and Maria).
Do you the Kerber will spread her vulture wings and fly to Kuala Lumpur to get some points ahead if IW?Tks Svitolina for helping maintain Ser's crown.
LOL you're right! My bad!Great, there's the jinx! Now two of them will have something (else) happen between now & then...
I think Kerber will fly any where to play a tournament. Unwisely. Less might be more for her. But, I guess she's aging, with limited profile/sponsorship so she may as well chase the money.Do you the Kerber will spread her vulture wings and fly to Kuala Lumpur to get some points ahead if IW?
LOL you're right! My bad!
Actually....gee I hope poor Serena is able to stay healthy enough to win another slam. I am so worried about her knee/ elbow/ shoulder/ thigh/ lung. Those other women are so young and healthy, I'm sure she hasn't got a chance.
Petra was 115 points away from becoming World No1 at the beginning of 2012 and she made a bad decision to play in the no-points Hopman cup instead of Brisbane.Exactly. But two Wimbledon titles is pretty impressive.
