Not usually a big tournament the week before a slam but this tournament features Djokovic.

Seeded players are:
Djokovic, Monfils, Isner, Johnson, Querrey, Mischa, Gasquet and Schwartzan.

Decent unseeded players which include: Vesely, Young, Anderson, Chardy, Harrison and Tomic.

No defending champ as the event wasn't around last year.

Doubles draw is headline by the Bryan Brothers. Other seeds are Dodig/Roger-Vasselin, French Open champs Harrison/Venus and Martin/Nestor.

Some great 1R matches:
Young v Edmund
Medvedev v Querrey
Bellucci v Anderson
Mischa Zverev v Harrison

Potential 2R matches:
Vesely v #1 Djokovic (Vesely leads the H2H 1-0 after that stunning victory in Monte Carlo last year).
Mahut v #5 Querrey
Anderson v Gasquet
Chardy v #3 Isner
Tomic v #6 Mischa or Ryan Harrison

So, who will win?

I expect Mischa to win, because Djokovic doesn't match up well against that type of player. Mischa already nearly beat him last year, and he is more lethal on grass than HC.

Anyone but Isner and Querrey. People can criticize me for lack of patriotism but that's not the style of tennis I ever want to succeed.

Come on Novak.

I'm thinking Querrey. I don't see Novak winning it, I don't think he'll lose, he'll withdraw before a match, whether it's QF or SF. Can't seem him doing what Stan does and winning a title the week before the slam.

The Slaminal analogy is wrong...the Chennai title before AO'14 had a one week gap; the RG'15 title was preceded by an early exit at Geneva; he did not play the week before USO'16.

Didn't say Novak was winning the slam ;) Just meant like this year how Stan won Geneva and went on to make the French final this year

Djokovic will win it easy. If he doesn't then he should think of retirement. Monfils (terrible grass player) being seeded second says everything about this tournament.

Pospisil can be a threat on grass. Loves the surface. Wimbledon QFist in 2015, won the Wimbledon doubles with Sock in 2014.

Not watching but see Pospil is beat Vesely. Pospisil fan here, delighted to see him getting his S**t together again after, a disasterous year.
What's happened to Vesely? He was supposed to be a possible up and comer?
Anyway, go Pospy!! Does he really have to play Djok next? Those have been the kind of draws he gets.
Beat Murray IW ... I know everyone beats Murray.

Yes he can be a threat. He lost that year to Murray.
That quarterfinal run at Wimb cost him a lot in rankings, ultimately, because next year he went out round 1, and dropped about 50 spots in the rankings as a result.

Vasek won.

Now his reward is having to play Djok. Not fair! Such a slog to get himself back into the top 50.
I wonder if it's too late for him to play Wimb quallies if (likelyl) he loses to Djok? Would they give him a WC for having won the doubles and made the quarters a few years ago?

Never really heard of this Gombos. Hits quite well and knows to make Tomic run which is always a flaw. Saves BP and holds for 2-1.

Break point for Gombos.
UE saves it, thank god.

This would be a shockingly bad loss for Tomic.

He holds serve for 4-4 anyway.

Triple set point Tomic.

Only needs the one and he wins the first set 7-6.

I'm off. Hope he runs away with it now and hopefully there's some more decent matches for the rest of the day.

Surely it gained him a lot in rankings, and that effect then went away a year later ...

LOL. Haase jinxing and anti-jinxing the weather forecast in interview after dismissing Mahut 6-4, 7-5(4).

I was at that final against the Bryan brothers. It was a good and very exciting match to end a day that had seen quite one-sided finals in the ladies' singles and doubles.

Call me foolish (but please don't), but I"ll be up in the morning cheering for Pospisil! (Not actually watching as I won't likely find a stream, but watching the scoreline.)
Yes, I'm a glutton for punishment, but Novak is a bit rusty on grass, isn't he??, and, while Vasek has been an incredibly inconsistent player, he did take down Andy earlier this year, didn't he??

Go Vasek!!

Djokovic vs Pospisil could be interesting, definitely going to watch that.

Well, with Pospisil, he will likely either be a hero or a bum. There usually isn't any in-between.
He's getting his modeling career ready just in case!

I would love to see him succeed on the courts, but, if not, well he would do well in the media.

^^^If Novak is Normal self, he will handle Popisil in straight routine sets........ so we will see where Novak's game is on grass right at the moment.

A bit of a nervous start from Novak, two DFs and an forehand error to start the match off. 2 BPs.

Looks like he's trying to find some rhythm from the back of the court early on, very passive rally. 1 saved.
