2017 Fed Cup thread

Defending champion Czech Republic will be without its major stars in next week's Fed Cup semifinals against the United States.

An inexperienced team of Katerina Siniakova, Kristyna Pliskova, Denisa Allertova and Marketa Vondrousova has been selected for the April 22-23 series on an outdoor clay court at Saddlebrook Resort in Florida.

Pliskova and Vondrousova are newcomers while Siniakova and Allertova have played Fed Cup doubles once before.

Karolina Pliskova, Barbora Strycova and Lucie Safarova, who helped the Czechs win five of the past six Fed Cup titles, are not available.

The Czechs will also miss Petra Kvitova because of injuries she suffered during a knife attack in December.

The winner advances to the Fed Cup final on Nov. 11-12.

If they pull this one off...

If they pull this off with these youngsters, then Prague would be my top candidate for the next YEC venue. Actually, it already is my top candidate....so many quality players and highly dedicated Fed Cup fans, plus a very central and inexpensive location for many fanbases.
Good point. Also it's located quite close to Moscow and Luxembourg (the tournaments held the week before the finals). This would be important so we never have to see the last minute rush that Kuznetsova had last year after winning Moscow, flying 9 hours to Singapore and then playing a match within 24 hours.

Check out the names & ranks of the players nominated for this year's semis.

Always something.

Great Britain's Fed Cup match in Romania took a chaotic turn as Romanian captain Ilie Nastase was sent from the stands and British No.1 Johanna Konta left the court in tears.

The drama occurred in the second match of the day, with Konta leading Sorana Cirstea 6-2 1-3. Nastase -- who had already made controversial remarks about Serena Williams' unborn child prior to the match -- was escorted from the stadium following a warning for unsportsmanlike conduct.

The Press Association reported that Nastase had been heard to say to the umpire: "What's your f***ing problem?". He then appeared to call Great Britain captain Anne Keothavong and Konta "f***ing b******."

Konta approached the umpire to complain and left the court in tears, with her British team-mates and Keothavong joining her in the locker room as play was suspended for around 20 minutes.

Romanian No.1 Simona Halep -- playing in her home town of Constanta -- spoke to fans to ask them for calm and play eventually resumed, with Konta winning five games in a row to seal a straight-sets victory.

Halep had earlier tried to defend Nastase over his comments about Williams, stating: "He's joking all the time and I'm 100 percent that was a joke.

"I don't believe that was something bad coming from him but I think it was not respectful a little bit with his comment. But we cannot get upset on Ilie, he's like that and he's with us the same."

The Euro Africa Zone tie now stands at 1-1, with Halep having defeated Heather Watson in the first match of the day. The winner will qualify for the World Group, a level Britain has not reached in 24 years.

Always something.
Cry me a river! There are 2 issues here:

1. Nastase's allegedly racism: it was a joke. In Romanian it sounds much softer and innocent than when it's translated in English. Not defending Nastase, I don't even like him, but people really need to get down from the over politically correct train and live their lives. These days one can't say anything without offending somebody... Jeez.

2. The game was suspended because Konta couldn't stop crying. Really?!!? She's such a sensitive girl. Apparently some guy from the crowd said something ugly to her. Wow! Now that's a first on a tennis court. Nobody was ever treated like this before. The crowd was not even bad. Ok, there was a bit of shouting, but it was not like at US Open or Roland Garros where it's a volcano of shouting and insults. There is no regulation in tennis that a game must stop because a player has a soft mental strength. She's a pro. She's been insulted on court ever since she was a kid. People not believing this really need to go witness 12 year olds tournaments, where the parents are at their worst. Konta basically defaulted, and ITF made an abuse to allow her to stop the game until she recovered. The Romanian Tennis Federation should contest this decision...

Tennis drama. Heh!

Cannot agree mor with this post, specially about the point 2. A lot of guys and girls receive abuse, it is not OK at all, but you have to go to the locker room for that? LMAO

I called her a crybaby last year when she burst into tears for no obvious reason at I think was Eastbourne. He is a total idiot though-not sure how he came keep his position after today, yesterday was bad enough with the two incidents, but rather than keep a low profile he does the Viv Richards storming into the press box routine & then apparently insults his opposite number & a player.

Play was suspended while Nastase was removed, he didn't go easily.
Where you there? I was there... (I even played on that court... last year :) )

Play was suspended while Konta was crying herself first to the umpire, then for 2 more minutes on court, Sorana was waiting for her to stop crying, and in the end the match stopped while she went to the locker room... outrageous. Nastase actually got out quickly...

Meanwhile, in Monte Carlo, the whole stadium is booing the umpire, and by ricochet Nadal... yet nobody is crying... so...

Agreed about him being wrong :) That's his trademark. He wasn't called "Nasty" for nothing.

From an article I just read -

The match between Konta and Cirstea resumed, and the British player won five successive games to win 6-2, 6-3 and level the World Group II playoff at 1-1.

Cirstea later hit out at Konta, accusing her of having a thin skin.

“I’m not happy,” she said. “Johanna, speaking tennis wise, she was better than me today. My problem was, and I still do not understand, why the match was stopped at 2-1.

“I did not hear what Ilie said, I understand you take Ilie out, perfect. Then we play another game, I win it, and then suddenly you started crying and let’s go off the court.

“I’ve played all over the world, they called me from gypsy to ***** to a***hole to idiot. They were doing like (mimes slitting throat) to me. I never cried and left the court, I stay there and I play.”

While Nastase was probably out of line, it sounds like Konta may have exaggerated the drama.

Konta may have been a bit sensitive, but everyone is different, takes criticism and insults in different ways, we aren't all carbon copies of each other.

Cirstea just sounds like a sore loser, but I guess she had a bit of momentum before it was suspended so it's somewhat understandable.

Cirsteaa was the. mis fortunatelylf her own misfortune, of her teams miss fortunate, she was no where really winning that, this is just sabre rattling going on, they were always the underdogs GB, I suspect the tommorow they will find it difficul.
The reality is Romania want nothing more than than helep to beat konta
Quite sad really

Svitolina now with FOUR wins over a world number 1. Crazy stat.

To put it in perspective:
Caroline has 0
Radwanska, Kerber, Halep have 1
Muguruza, Stosur, Li Na and Ivanovic have 2
Azarenka has 3
Kvitova has 4
Sharapova and Kuznetsova have 7
Venus has 15
Serena has 16

Sure you can say it means nothing, but I think having a win over a #1 player is a pretty big deal and for Elina to have 4! Impressive.

Anybody think Kerber is more ripped in 2016?

There is no such thing as being sensitive. They are top pro players. Play or default. As easy as that.

The UK team (including the press) searched for drama and scandal from the moment they arrived, which is totally unpolite when in a foreign country. We pride ourselves with our hospitality, we love having guests, but we get very angry when our guests are not polite and use tricks to get an advantage. That's what also triggered Nastase to have that stupid (yes, it was stupid) reaction, as he was taunted from the moment the event started.

Anyway, the Brits didn't manage to win even with the tricks. It was sad and we expected a bit more honor from them. Their tabloids are screaming hell now... well, let them, we're used to be called names by the Brits

There is nothing wrong with what Cirstea said. The thing with Konta's psychologist might have tipped Konta over the edge, but Cirstea is right here, imo. You don't get to take a 25 minute timeout just because you're crying.

Are you Bogdan who photograph for FedCup site???

Nice that Belarus can win without Azarenka. Azarenka must made Fed Cup as one of her main goal this year now.
If Cz youngster can oust USA, the favor is still within Cz team as I'm sure they will go full force in the final.

This girl Vondrousova has forehand crosscourt that is like RAFA nadal's. this was like amateur video.....she kept on hitting that crosscourt forehand into Lauren's backhand and she literally couldn't handle it 99 % of the time...... Very very weird to see that in PRO level, since they really have no weakness when hitting from stationary position.

Underdog Canada take down Kazakhstan 3-1. 20 yo Francoise Abanda took both of her matches in straight sets, while 16 yo Bianca Andreescu held her own against Putintseva (but falling in 3 sets), and beat Shvedova in straights. Aggressive play by the Canadians. Watch out for young Andreescu in the future. I see many great tournaments in her future against Vondrousova, Anisimova, and Potapova!
