interesting question, Fed had entered the event, got in form quickly, ended up playing Stan in qtrs/semis...who would Naal had want to play in the final?

It's pretty simple. Wawrinka beat Novak in their 1st slam final meeting in 4 sets. In their 2nd slam final meeting? Beat him in 4 sets.

Wawrinka beat Nadal in their 1st slam meeting in 4 sets. And the same will happen tomorrow. He wins slam finals in 4 sets. Period.

Don't you ever get tired of making silly predictions? Wawrinka has maybe a 20% chance of beating Nadal on Chatrier and that's if Nadal has a terrible day and Wawrinka can sustain killer form needed to take three sets.

The only predictions I've made recently are that Stan will win RG and Nadal won't.

Huh? You've been predicting every mug was going to beat Nadal for months. Wawrinka is no mug and he has the best shot out of any other player who was in the draw to beat Nadal but I don't think he'll prevail.

I don't recall saying anyone would beat Nadal before now besides Novak in Madrid.

Please! I don't want to go check your history but you've been saying for weeks that the only reason Nadal has won anything on clay is because he has faced nobody on clay to challenge him. I'm pretty sure you said Thiem would challenge Nadal and I know for sure you said that the only reason Nadal beat Djokovic in Madrid was because Djokovic hates that tournament. You said that if Nadal and Djokovic meet at the FO, Djokovic would win. I know there have been many more posts of that nature. You basically post that any decent player and his mother will beat Nadal.

[boromir]One does not simply attack the Wawrinka backhand.[/boromir]

Nadal will! Stan better pray It's one of those days where Nadal's forehand lands in the service Box all the time. If Nadal's forehand lands 1-2ft inside the baseline, with the amount of spin he generates, stan will be hitting his backhand from 15ft behind the baseline, he will get destroyed. I don't care how powerful his backhand is.:)

Stan has to invite Nadal to hit cross court forehands and then hit DTL BH into the open court. Problem is, Nadal can counter this by just going DTL with his FH and getting Stan on the run.

I said Thiem had a chance. Anyway, time to get 4.5 hours of sleep, wake up, have coffee, go to the gym, then go home and watch Stan kick some ass.

is it Clarky back from the dead?....but that was an even weirder situation because of the insistence of being a fan..amidst all the accusations of anti-jinxing

any club player was always set to beat him, and I think that was during the 2013 run..maybe an expert trolling job of Nadal himself, never being the favorite, for both?

I just hope one of them wears a different colour shirt....is time for Wawa to unleash the daggy pant.

As much as I like Stan I want Rafa to pummel him into the red dirt of Roland Garros, sorry if that's unpopular but that is what I want. Whether it will happen or not? Well that's another matter. Looking nervously forward to this match.

More like: what will be the Wawa fans' excuse if he gets crushed. Oh wait, they're already coming up with a pre-emptive truckload of them
Wawa SHOULD put up a good fight given his recent record at RG. No excuse if he doesn't.
He will put up a decent fight, don't you worry sis.

But let's be real. Rafa is 10-1 vs Fedovic here and what, 100-2 in best of five on clay?
Taking a set will be a very respectable performance vs the clay GOAT. Taking two would be fantastic. And taking 3 would be outright ridiculous.

Hoping for ridiculous!
(But I do fear Stan's RoS will be inadequate)

Also, funny there is so little talk about Wawa's semifinal marathon. Had it been Rafa we wouldn't have heard the end of how he would be at a disadvantage because of it (while still winning of course)

Wawrinka is going to be tired from his Semi's battle + he's 32. He's not the 29-year-old AO14 version of him any more.

Can't see any reason this doesn't go to Nadal in straights.

33% of votes think Nadal in 3. Only 2.5% think Stan will win in 3. Hoping for a Stan win, but absolutely positively no way Nadal loses. He wins in 3. If it goes 4, Nadal will breadstick Stan in the 4th.

I expect Nadal to be ruthless here. He'll pin Stan in his backhand corner more often than not. If Wawa starts the match as he finished the SF then we could be in for a good match though.

who will be the umpire? will nadal get pinged?will Stan have a moan if he takes too long?

lmao that would be pretty fearless, almost insanely so for an umpire to call nadal out on time wasting in a slam final on clay, when he is going for la decima. I'd find it highly amusing though

it shoudnt matter if its the final or not! i think this could get entertaining

no ia, but i still think given the occasion that umpire would reallly not have to give a ****, and well i dont know if many of them want to take the risk of being banned from ever overseeing a nadal match again

Stan would have bounced Fed in straights in that case, like in 2015. Fed's done being a factor in BO5 on clay for a while now, whether he skips the CC season or not.

Some thoughts on that final:

Wawa has to get in his serve somewhere in the mid 60ies%, if he wants to maintain his winning chance high. I haven't looked it up how his avg for the tournament in this category is, but he must serve well, especially when he gets the chance to stretch Nadal.

I expect that both players will have an unusually strong showing in this department and Wawa will suffer more as a result (hopefully not to an extent that he melts down and his own service game suffers).

Rallying will of course be crucial, so Wawa needs to break Nadal's FH down with his BH, working the angles and, again, stretching Nadal. As little slices as possible.

The additional lead on Nadal's racquet will help him does that too even from difficult positions, so Stan should be careful about leaving Nadal striking (even from neutral positions slightly behind the baseline which would be also in line with the controlled aggression that I expect from Nadal).

Keeping Stan on the run in all directions is crucial for Nadal, if he wants to be aggressive. Nadal needs to not let Wawa get into comfortable rythm of baseline rallying but try to outfox him even with the risk of giving a few cheap points away, while figuring out what is Stan comfortable with on the day. This is very important as I believe that the match will be decided by execution rather than some general level of ingenuity or fitness.

For example, if Stan is consistently able to pull off BDL and FDL he will destroy Nadal's confidence.

Tactically I expect Nadal to play ultra aggressive on his opponent's early service games and maintain control from there as he has done all tournament.

Stan is not a slow starter, but unconventional (very tactical early) play can unsettle him and cause him fall behind for a period of time, which can be crucial.

Overall I expect Nadal to win it with very tactical play early in the sets and solid service game.

Stan's chances are in absolutely perfect execution of his gamelan to break Nadal's FH and blasting him off the court, while serving well into the 60ies.

65/35 Nadal.
