The RG draw is quite unbalanced much like IW's infamous Quarter of Death. Battling for the eventual right to lose to Rafa in the semifinals are some of this years best clay courters. Round of 32 was non-stop action with two encounters going 5 sets (ARV vs Pouille and Djokovic vs The Schwartz). Thiem vs Johnson had a tiebreaker and unfortunately Zeballos vs Goffin had an anklebreaker.

Albert Ramos-Vinalos was the Monte Carlo finalist and has played some fine matches this year on clay. Despite the head to head:
14/2017 SRB v ESP - DC WG - QF Hard Novak Djokovic Ramos-Vinolas 6-3 6-4 6-2 1.04 - 13.00
15/2015 R32 Monte Carlo Masters Clay Novak Djokovic Ramos-Vinolas 6-1 6-4 1.04 - 18.50
11/2015 R32 Indian Wells Masters Hard Novak Djokovic Ramos-Vinolas 7-5 6-3 1.02 - 26.00

Much like the Shwartzman match, its been a long time since these two met on clay and ARV is a far, far better player now in 2017 than 2015. Djokovic is not a lock for this match and should be some very fine tennis and another excellent workout for Nole like the Schwartzman match.:D

Djokovic in 4. Very hard to tell how both will play fresh off of two five set matches. ARV travelled 2921 meters during his match. Nole 2781 meters in his five set match. Thiem last year in his QF with Goffin did 3600 meters in 4 sets, so this doesn't look too bad with a full days rest.;)

I agree with Rainingaces, after the scare of last round. I don't expect Djokovic to drop a set and he should be looking to see this done in a fast straight sets.

You are a data guy. Do you really think that it makes a big difference how much they run? Curious.

LOL. This is a dumb post, sorry. Djokovic will be as fresh as a daisy.

Djokovic in straights.

Djokovic in 4. I see Vinolas putting up a good fight, but I also see Djokovic raising a level. First set Djoker, second ARV, then 3 and 4 go to Nole.

It is a measure of effort expended. It interesting that Thiem spent about 6.5 sets of Djokovic effort to take Goffin in 4 last year. I was expecting the step count to be higher. Nole's step count was much more efficient coming into the final with Thiem last year. We don't have this data for regular ATP events and it would have been interesting to see some measure of what Thiem expended beating Nadal last in Rome. I'd say with Thiem its how much he holds the turbo button down hitting powerful shots. He definitely did that in Rome and complained he just was not up for Djokovic match. Clay court matches can become very lopsided when one player is off a bit and that was the impression I had from their Rome match. Same thing happened to Thiem in Barcelona with Nadal where he hit the wall late in the first set and started going on a UE barage for the rest of the match. Thiem now with Goffin gone is very likely to come through efficiently this year for the first time. Thiem's step count so far:
Bolelli 1850 meters
Tomic 1359 meters
Johnson no IBM stats, but guessing around 1600 meters.

For three matches that is the equivalent of 5 sets with Goffin last year. Most of Thiem's sets were in the 800-900 meter range last year, so 550-600 is much better for him.:p I'm not sure steps totally measures it for Thiem. I remember he was dominating Goffin at Auz. Goffin's level got a bit better in the 2nd set and Thiem expended a tremendous amount of energy to save from 0-40 and triple set point in the second set. After firing in about 6 or 7 220 kph serves to dig out and hold the game, Thiem visibly hit the wall and then the UEs flowed.

In my opinion with the Zeballos match, Thiem will have had a very efficient and safe run into the QF. He won't have any good excuses if he gives Djoko a poor match again.

seems to me shot spot assumes the total compression of the ball making its 3d/virtual mark wider than the marks on clay.

"Quarter of the Dead" only because Djokovic is in it and he's playing like he's been dead since mid 2016
It is a very tough quarter as we're seeing here for Mr. Nole, but Dead as Nadal looking quite beastly and will wipe out the expected semifinalist.;)

Nole breaks back for 4 all.
