Honestly, if Federer doesn't play Miami I wouldn't care. He's done enough this year so far. IMO the focus should be on Wimbledon now.

True. Although I honestly feel that Federer would've withdrew from Miami if both Murray and Djokovic were fit to play. I think their withdrawals have played a big part in his decision to play Miami, and obviously he's not injured so he figured why not?

Or maybe he doesn't plan on playing Miami again after this year and wanted to give the fans one more chance to see him there?

Anything is possible. I'd like to think my idea is relatively close to correct though, but it could be a mile off.

I think Federer committed to Miami way before any of them withdrew. Based on what Federer said yesterday and what he had said after the AO, it looks like he might have a very light schedule as far as the clay swing is concerned, so I think playing Miami is a good idea. Even more so now that he's got a wide open field and a chance to improve his ranking before the grass season without tiring himself out on his weakest surface (Clay). He might not care about ranking now, but a good draw at Wimbledon/USO does increase his chances. He may have dodged a bullet at the AO & IW going through very though draws and winning the title, that may still come and bite him in the ass later this year if he gets the same kind of draws when he's perhaps a bit more tired physically. With that being said, he'll be #6 tomorrow if I'm not mistaken, so that shouldn't be a problem anymore.

iirc, i think he's already no.4 seed at wimbledon, i am not sure how the seedings work, but curious what roger needs to do to secure that no.4 seeding at the least.

For me, if Federer decided to skip the FO I would completely understand.

He would never, ever skip a major unless he was injured, we all know that. He's one leg up on the CYGS and the field is pathetic at this point. Now of course it's possible for Nadal to rediscover his beast clay mode or Stan to morph into Stanimal all Spring. But it's more likely than neither will do either of those things.

It was a near-miracle Roger won the AO, so I believe in miracles now and want him to play and go all out for RG. All he has to do is play one Masters before, either Rome or Madrid. Imagine a favorable draw and the other big guys falling early? It's way too tempting for Roger and it could happen.

Wow, so Stan finally joins each of the other Big 5 in blubbing after a loss! I guess it must have been the Fed factor coz I'm pretty sure he wouldn't have broken down against anyone else.

Lol at him calling Fed an a***hole for laughing after he had said he hoped Stan wins more titles (sub-text: 'but not if you're playing me you won't'). Stan knows what to expect from his fellow Swiss by now!;)

There are still 4 Masters and a Slam to play before Wimbledon so a lot can happen.

But basically for Fed to miss out on a top 4 seeding at Wimbledon these 2 thins would have to happen (combined):
1) Fed would have to gain very little points until Wimbledon
2) players who are close to him in the rankings - Raonic/Nishikori/Wawrinka would have to gain quite a bit more points in these 5 big tournaments compared to 2016

The most likely schedule for Fed IMO would be:

Skip MC
Extended spring holiday
Enter Madrid
If he loses early in Madrid, enter Rome. If he goes deep, skip it.
RG

It'll keep him fresh enough but at the same time enough prepped for RG

Not so sure, but whatever the motivation it's another big chance for Roger to gain very substantial ranking points and maybe to win another title. I don't think he'll win Miami though. SF or F, I reckon (draw pending).

If he gets to the final would you bet against him though? Just asking.

Fed was not dropping Miami from his schedule irrespective of today's result

As far as the top 4 is concerned , once they make a tournament commitment nothing is going to stop them except injury.

It is very different from Tomic or Kyrgios

The last two shots from Federer as a combination are absolutely sensational, and that ain't hyperbole. I'd go as far as to say that the half-volley FH was better than the volley.

Agreed. There is so much on that forehand and from the swing you'd think he just looped it in. That ball got behind Stan in a hurry.

Yep, vintage Fed forehand that. And that racquet head acceleration through the ball is just magic. Looks as if he teleports his racquet from his feet to his shoulder.

Me too, so I say skip Miami, and play Monte Carlo and Rome.
No MC please.

I prefer him playing Miami (for points) and Madrid (to prepare for RG). He should avoid facing Nadal and Djokovic at either Rome or MC so that they don't establish any confidence against him before RG and Wimbledon.

How is he going to prepare for RG in Madrid of all places?

For the points "yes", for preparation "no".

I really would. For me, if Federer decided to skip the FO I would completely understand. It's hard to see how he would win it and why put out so much energy with the risk of injury to his older body. I think he should focus on Wimbledon and the USO.

not required I think. Just play one CC masters for practice and play RG ...

should be fine.

probably should skip Miami though, but with djoko/murray not playing, he'd want to play so it isn't bereft of top players ....
