I forked out for Tennis TV so I could watch this one in full.
Like I predicted, story of the match was Sock's FH letting him down. His backhand held up pretty well although of course Fed was able to abuse it a few times.
Fed came out red-hot and Sock was as tight as could be, totally discombobulated, immobile, stance too back on his heels, badly dumping very hittable balls with the forehand, getting terrible, shallow, central placement even on the ones he got over the net. He made a couple of decent points but after being a little unlucky with the lob right in the sun and netting the easy smash, he decided to tank the set, which was a good move in my opinion. After that he just went through the motions and let Fed roll over him so he would get first serve in the second set. Sock was hoping Fed would cool down and he would warm up and he was right, as it turned out.
The second set went more or less according to plan. Sock served first and was able to stay "ahead of the count" the whole time, while Fed tightened up and started offering up way more second serves to work on as the second set wore on. Sock started to find the range on his forehand and got into some Fed service games. However, a combination of bad luck and the FH accuracy deserting him at key moments prevented him from taking the set and extending to a third, which I think he would have stood a solid chance of winning as the match was trending.
Obviously the bizarre net cord bounce on the volley was one such unlucky moment, although it appeared to me that Fed more or less tanked the following point out of sportsmanship. But the psychological effect on Sock was obvious. There were a couple of other moments, at 5-4 and a chance to go to deuce (I think) the netcord gave Fed a little favor again making the ball sit up. Then they got into the tiebreak and Sock was up the minibreak, but netcorded a CC FH. A little later he just missed the line on the IOFH and it was all over.
Overall, I can't say it was a good performance from Jack today, he was very tight and by the time he loosened up and was hitting well he had no margin for error -- then some bad luck and critical misses ate through that margin and kept him from extending it to a third set.
But hopefully he will grow into big moments like these. His serve can help him hang in a match even when a GOATish player like Fed comes out redlining, he just needs to gain that extra measure of confidence and control on the FH, especially CC. I expected little from Sock at this tournament, and he made it this far really based more on grit and clutchness than playing to his highest potential, but I'm optimistic it can be a building block of self-belief and finding that extra edge to take him to a higher echelon.
