Fed got away with that one, wasn't serving great in the 2nd set and thanks to a few UEs from Sock he got through in straights.

Hopefully this will be a good reminder that he'll need to up his game against Stan tmr.

The thing with Stan is he will always give a chance to Fed to grab at least one set. Fed just has to work on his own for one more.

Fed's serve and shots were brutal in the first (saw around half of it) - Late into the second he couldn't seem to hit a first serve to save his life and he was MUCH more conservative off the ground, probably as a side effect of missing serves and feeling inaccurate. This is a Fed norm, of course, but always a frustrating ebb. Glad he got through that tiebreak, even though the third set could well have been another masterclass.

Hoping Fed's early ballstriking and variety will undo Stan tomoz. A Masters final and 600 ranking points as a bare minimum is brilliant, but us Fed fans are greedy...

I just don't want a repeat of Monte Carlo, that was one that got away for Fed. In fact that final was much like this match against Sock, Fed in control and then was mediocre, lost the TB and Stanimal went on full flow in the final set and by then it was too late for Fed.

If he manages this, it'll be his third time achieving this (the other two occasions being Cinci 12 and 15). No one else has done this at an MS1000 level.

Were they also without dropping a set or just not dropping serve (lost a tiebreak in another match)

I hope Fed wins because besides the 18th slam, IW used to be one of those titles that Fed just could not win despite all his efforts. WTF was another.

The 18th slam has been finally achieved. Now IW and WTF remain.

Federers backhand this tournament has been pure sexual chocolate

:eek:Sexual Chocolate ???

Is that legal ?

Didn't drop sets in both runs at Cinci.

I assume you mean his 2014 and 2015 runs? Otherwise IW and WTF were pretty successful events for Fed (although he did have a few freak losses in IW between 07-11).

Yes, I was referring in particular to those 2 runs. Only one man constantly defeated him, but that man isn't a problem anymore.

my point was more on the lines "Roger was done for in M1000's"

but yea, that too.
The way he played in Cincy '15 only crazy man would think that RF18 is over with winning Masters.. 7-6,6-3 Djoker without break points...

Tbh I'd rather he skip Miami. Remember he's nearing 36, needs to schedule wisely. Besides Miami is one of his least favoured surfaces, hasn't won it since 2006.

If Fed is to skip one masters event, much easier for him to bag points in Miami then one of the clay ones, especially now with Murray withdrawal and potentially Novak following suit.

He's also only allowed one BP total. Yes, he's played Robert and Johnson and Sock. but did play Nadal, but to only give up one BP total is crazy. His 2015 Cincy win was crazy in that Djoko and Murray didn't even get to BP which insane.

I normally would agree. But I think he'd rather take a chance at Miami then skip Monte Carlo, maybe Madrid and then only play Rome-Roland Garros.

Especially now that Murrovic are pulling out of Miami, there's tons of points to be won for Fed and ground to be gained in the rankings. This is the best chance Fed has had to get back to #1 since he won everything from Post US Open 2011 til the end of the year and gave himself a chance to get #1. Two Semis at Melbourne and RG, Indian Wells victory definitely helped him get back there. I think playing hardcourt right now would be preferable to his body over playing long matches on clay. There's no risk in playing Miami right now. He wouldn't have to play his first match until next weekend. If he does really well there he's afforded the opportunity to skip one of the Clay tourneys. If he doesn't, well there were no points to defend to begin with.

Yep, in his 2015 Cinci win he only face 3 BPs in the entire tournament when he went down 0-40 against Lopez. Not sure about 2012 Cinci but I know Novak couldn't get to BP in that match either.

Nothing against Roger but this forum would be absolutely unbearable if Federer wins the tournament. Already we have threads about how he is gonna win the CYGS, how he is a favorite for RG etc etc. I was happy for Federer fans for their AO win but the wankfest has reached unbearable proportions.

Are you new here? This forum does that for EVERY player if they hit even a sliver of lightning in a bottle. After beating Delpo Djokovic was the "Slow HC GOAT that cannot be stopped on these court conditions"

He's 4-2 in finals at IW and those 2 losing finals both came against peak Djokovic. Now he only has to face Stan! ;)

Well then that would depend on how much importance he's going to give to the clay season. If it means doing Miami and then skipping one or two of the clay Masters, then yeah makes sense.

Fed: "Don't know my clay schedule, will decide after Miami, will not be based on ranking"

Maybe 1 M1000 and 1 500 before RG. Its clear he's not looking forward to gaining many points in the next 2 months.

It'll probably be even less than this. Back in 2016 his original schedule before getting the knee surgery was Brisbane - AO - Dubai - IW and then NOTHING until RG before heading to the grass season as usual.
