Nadal vs Thiem. In the final. Once again. Gotta say I'm more than pleased.

Congrats to both players for making the final, especially Thiem on his first Masters final

. Good luck and may the best man win. :)

words from Thiem after Barcelona final vs. Nadal...

"He was hitting to my backhand and I couldn't really come out of it," said Thiem. "The next time I play him I have to change something. He didn't hit many unforced errors and give me any free points. It's difficult for any player in the world against him."

Taking all circumstances into consideration, this is the best possible final we could have hoped for. King of Clay looking to defend his territory and defend the Big 4 Stronghold against a relatively young challenger - refreshing to see someone born in the 90s finally make a final of a big tournament.

It'll probably be Nadal in 2, but who knows - maybe Die Thiem Methode can do some damage. It should be the biggest test of the week for both players.

You could do a better title formatting, like putting the year and tournament first. Otherwise it was good.

Thanks. But there's actually no "rule" for this, is there? Everyone has their own "format" from what I see. :D If there was one I would be happy to follow.

The reason I put the players' names first is because it's easier to recognise the tab for the thread when PC/tablet users are opening a lot of tabs on their web browser.

^^is that trophy PURE Gold ?

It is! The most expensive trophy in any sport. :D

The players are only allowed to "lift" it though (hence the poll's title :p). Then they will be given a silver replica to take home.

trophyPhotos.jpg

"Wrapped around a small column are 32 tennis rackets bearing the names of the most important grand slam winners in history. On the top there is a golden tennis ball with Ion Tiriac’s name on it."

"It is comprised of 96 individual, hand-finished components in 6.5 kg of solid rose gold and stands 430mm high. Its total weight is 7.5 kg and is set with 33 TW VVS 1 diamonds (10.9 carats) making it the most expensive trophy ever created for any sport.

trophyIllustration02.jpg

On the top of the trophy is a tennis ball in honour of Ion Tiriac, a relentless advocate of the sport and the base of the trophy is a black obsidian "globe", with the continents represented in plates of solid gold. One solitaire diamond marks Madrid and the globe is supported by 10 columns symbolising the world's ten most important championships.

In addition to lifting this masterpiece for the first time at the Mutua Madrid Open, its winner will take home a silver replica of approximately 3 kilos and 330mm high."

In order for Thiem to win this match, he needs to play like Wawrinka. In other words... he needs to stand right on the baseline and take every ball on the rise. But there's no way that's happening. That kind of adjustment will take Thiem at least a year or more to get comfortable with. Until then, Thiem isn't winning this matchup on this surface against Nadal in this form.

Nadal in 2.

The last time Nadal lost a final right after beating Djokovic was exactly 8 years ago in Madrid. I doubt that's happening again this year.

I recall that particular match being a much longer and more tiring affair for Nadal than what we saw yesterday. Easy pickings for Fed in the subsequent final the next day.

Thiem is going to be Nadal's main rival at Rome and at the French Open.

I don't make predictions as mine usually suck but I'll be mystic meg for this post.

I think so.

Thiem on the final:

"I will give everything tomorrow and hope I can play a good final.”

“I think he played a very good match in Barcelona. I played well also. If I'm at my best and he's at his best on clay, he's probably the better player. If you see his records on this surface, it's just amazing. But tomorrow is a new day. I will try to improve the things I didn't do that good in Barcelona and then we will see what happens.”

Rafa on Thiem:

"It's going to be a tough match whoever I face tomorrow. That's the reality. We're saying I will be playing against Thiem. He's No. 3 in the Race, came from the final in Barcelona. He's young, has a lot of talent. I think the altitude helps him here. The ball bounces high and it's difficult to control."

Like almost everyone I expect Rafa to win this. But I think Thiem will make it much harder for him this time and has his own chance as well.

Should be a great final. :)

I think that match is the most famous one at Madrid since it became a clay court tourney? Gets mentioned and highlighted a lot. Also called "epic". Novak was very emotional and cried after the match.

The 2 times Fed beat Rafa on clay were right after his gruelling battles against Novak and Hewitt in the semis. Even bagelled him and stopped his winning streak at Hamburg 2007. But that's the game.

Wrong. Milos Raonic, born 1990, beat him to it (made the finals of 2013 Montreal, 2014 Paris and 2016 Indian Wells).
And Kei was born just 3 days too early to fit the category but he made that elusive MS1000 final in Madrid and faced the same opponent Thiem is up against tomorrow.

Nadal in straight sets.

Hoping atleast its a bit more competitive because Nadal is in beastmode recently and is too good for Thiem.

Nadal in 2. He's playing very well at the moment, his confidence is probably at a 3 year high given his current run on clay and a victory on one of his biggest nemesis today. Vamos Rafa!

This is not some jinx post against nadal.

Ive been saying since acapulco thiem has flattered to deceive and later i think nadal will tear him apart.

Nadal does everything bigger here now in 2017 and with thiems cumbersome movement i can see him getting creamed in straight sets.

Thiem is useless against big players and he has a chance to prove it yet again .

Rafa will not give him more than 6-7 games totally

As much as I like Thiem and think he'll do well in the long run -- he's just highlighted the difference between a game plan and the lack of one.

it's why I'm interested in seeing what he'll do tomorrow...and this is where coaches are supposed to earn their money too

they could play again in the Rome qtrs. on Friday

again with the "cumbersome movement"?...two players that have movement this cumbersome, how will the match even get played?....think you gave the game away :)
