2017 men's NCAA Tournament

Stanford women are freaking tough as nails. Always impressed by their fight. They looked like they were gonna get blanked 4-0 and now they have a shot at a 4-3 win.

Their men's team could learn a lot from their women's team.

I think the injuries did the Cards in . if they were healthy, I think they would have taken this one. Gators were in choke mode at the end

Wow...UF Women's wins it? Feeling satisfied but not happy. I used to live in Florida so I guess I have some bias for the UF team, but I still hoped that USC or UCLA would take a title.

Hopefully, with this being on ESPNU will bring in more tennis fans and exposure to the sport!
Having played on a National Championship team back in the day where singles were played 1st then doubles and both were best of 3 sets I was initially not a fan of the changes in format--for a long time I though the 1 set, no-ad doubles matches were just lame. But I know can see how it better fits in with television and could give the sport more exposure. When I played dual matches took all afternoon to complete--almost what it took to finish both the men's and women's finals today. The directors, though, do need to get better at moving the coverage from court to court as the match progresses but hopefully we'll see more coverage in the future.

will it all end now for UVA? no Coach and no Players? 4 Seniors are leaving...4 core Players....their no.1 doubles Player corinteli and their #1 #2 #5 Singles Players...

Congratulations for a great accomplishment to UVa and coach Botland. Three in a row speaks of legendary status in any sports realm. The team came together after some sporadic play and peaked at the close.

The door is definitely open for a new champion next season. UVA does have Matthew Lord and Kyrylo Tsygura incoming, and I would be surprised if the new coach doesn't add another player to the roster before the fall. Coaching vacancy will apparently be filled VERY shortly...like today or tomorrow.

They also would have had less scholarship money available if Schnur were still there. Would they have signed Blumberg and Soendergaard with Schnur still there?
Blumberg came in early so may not have shown until fall 17 if Schnur had remained.

we could have a few transition years coming up with national titles for grabs similar to early 2000s after Stanford fell off and Baylor, Illinois and Pepperdine won titles.
UNC, Wake, Texas, Florida (big recruits coming in) could all be in the mix.

Brian Boland goes out on top. Great coach, but it's just a shame that his legacy will be somewhat hurt by the obvious stacking he did for his final championship team. Altamirano at 4 should have been illegal.

Any of Virginia's top 4 players should have been illegal at #4. But one of them had to play there. The distance in ability from 1 through 6 on that roster was tiny. The down side of that is it means there was no Cameron Norrie, Petros Chrysochos or Mikael Torpegaard available at #1. The up side was that the likelihood of winning got higher and higher as you moved down from 1 to 6, because other teams had a drop off at some point and UVa did not. The #5 and #6 players for UVa, Aragone and Wiersholm, have each won a Futures tournament recently. Think about how bizarre that is.

Who should have played 4 for UVA then? What would have been the fair lineup?

A lot of complaints about Ritschard at 1 for UVA but he lost in a 3rd set TB to Torp and wiped the court with Schneider the last 2 days.

Tom Fawcett Easy win in 1st round. well on his way to the NCAA singles title. Bradley Klahn won it last time so why not Tom ?

Florian Lakat routining top player from North Carolina,,,,Schineider.... Normally this would not happen but with NO rest in between team matches,,,top guys that went far into team draw are getting penalized and tired. Is this fair when you are trying to decide who is BEST player in college ? They must provide 5 days of rest in between and hold the individual at different site like at the Farm..

hiring a Duke man to carry on the legacy? smart move UVA!

I looked in at this forum a bit over the last couple days, and I'm happy to see most of the same characters (and same stupid feddie predictions) still around

I assume you have long since finished med school and moved on? I disappeared from the forum for quite a while until recently. Very surprised that the Duke men's team is in its current state.

yeah, nearing the end of residency nowadays - more sleep, and less procrastinating from studying on this forum, nowadays when i'm free

congrats on the continued UVA success - glad to see a very strong tournament for the ACC even if Duke unfortunately isn't keeping pace

Schneider has been playing like **** this whole week, should not have lost to some players

Tom as much better groundies than Thatcher. Ryan had better volleys though but Tom's game is aggressive baseline game, much like Marat Safin. and Safin did pretty well in ATP tour.
I agree. If he gets a wildcard in the U.S. Open, he has a 50/50 chance of winning it*.

*by it I mean the first point of the match if he serves first.

Hmm, if that were the case you would expect the Gator women to choke, since they had less than 24 hours of rest, but 3 out of 5 first round wins, plus upsetting #2 seed Hayley Carter that had more rest. Nope, sorry, wrong answer. Schneider has been slumping for a while, losing to Ponwith, Chrysochos, Friedrich easily in straight sets in tournament, and squeaking by Lakat when they last met in 3 sets, and should have been on a lower court for team tournament. I always thought Blumberg was a bit better anyway, and he has been crushing it this year at #2 and even a little #1. Tiredness is excuse-making for Schneider.

Ronnie Schneider is a fighter, but he's not a top-tier guy, as his results against other team's no. 1s in the team tourney showed. Blumberg is better, and a first-round loss by Schneider is to be expected. Hayley Carter going down, though—that's a shock, and kinda sad for one of the country's best.

Top 2 seeds of women's draw were ousted in straight sets. Definitely shocking.

And after he wins he can jump into the Ohio River and swim over to the Kentucky side

Tom Fawcett (Stanford) defeats Eduardo Mena (Tennessee Tech) 6-0, 6-1.

WOW,, this is scary good. Tom could win the NCAA title without losing a set... Is this possible ?

Fawcett might become as good as Sam Warburg. Guy reminds me of a less fluid Sam Querrey. Can see him being very dangerous when he's on, but seems to lose focus all too often.
