Bionic Poster
Another big tournament for the Ladies. Premier Mandatory Miami Open.

Lots of big names, quite a few big names missing but it should be a good 2 weeks.

Angelique Kerber is back to number 1 in the world, despite her poor form of late. Serena is down to number 2 following her Indian Wells and Miami withdrawal. Defending champ was Vika but she's dealing with motherhood now. Other withdrawals include: Kvitova, Sloane, Giorgi and Bacsinszky.

Seeds are:
Kerber, Pliskova, Halep, Domi, Radwanska, Muguruza, Kuzy, Keys, Svitolina, Konta, Venus, Wozniacki, Vesnina, Stosur, Strycova, Bertens, Pavs, Coco, Sevastova, Suarez Navarro, Garcia, Mladenovic, Gavrilova, Babos, Vinci, Lucic-Baroni, Poots, Begu, Konjuh, Zhang, Kasatkina and Makarova.

So many names..

Ash Barty, Tomjlanovic, Mattek Sands, Gibbsy, Vikhlyantseva and a few others with wildcards.

Defending doubles champs are Mattek Sands/Safarova.

So, who do you have?

Draws out too, not filled with qualifying yet though.

Juicy 1R:
Bouchard faces wildcard and recent first time titleist Ash Barty. The winner faces Sam Stosur!
Errani v Bencic.
Cirstea v Puig.
Bellis v Tomjlanovic
Wickmayer v Safarova
Jankovic v Shvedova

Good potential 2R:
Kristyna Pliskova v Kuznetsova
Osaka v Halep
Bouchard/Barty v Stosur
Cornet v Konta
Wickmayer/Safarova v Gavrilova
Bellis/Tomjlanovic v Vesnina
Ostapenko v Pliskova!!! (played a 3 set thriller at the AO)

Many popcorn potential 3R matches between seeded players:
Kerber is set to meet Kasatkina in the 3R if they both win their 2R. (Kerber lost to Kasatkina in Sydney when she was #1 and in Doha when she was #2. Tough draw for her).
Venus v Kiki.
Kuzy v Vinci who just played in IW in 3 sets.
Halep v Makarova.
Muguruza v Zhang.
Radwanska v Lucic-Baroni. (MLB beat Aga at the Aus Open).
Poots v Pliskova.

The link updates itself. There's no reason to type every single name out when the draw does it for you.

Wow, this will be Kerber's 21st week as number 1. She ties Sharapova for total number weeks at #1.
In Sharapova's entire career, she spent a total of just 21 weeks as number 1. That surprised me.

Wow, that is indeed surprising. Pova in God mode (2004-2005) can only snatch a week at number 1.

Quallies: Potapova can snatch a main draw considering her other 3 opponents is so so. And hopefully she will meet another high schooler Amanda Anisimova in main draw.

Every Ws match is a popcorn LOL.

1Q: Kerber should really take advantage in here. Kasatkina is not in form and also Suarez Navarro and Bertens.
Venus said in conference she is nursing a bit of injury, Kuzzy a lot of long matches this week so Kiki have big chance here. Unless the lefty Pliskova can turn the table around.

2Q: I hope Osaka can edge Halep and Garcia for a spot in QF, it seems like Semis spot is a shout out between Konta and Keys but there is so many sleepers like Barty, Peng, Garcia and Cornet.

3Q: Too many talents. Muguruza vs Konjuh could make an interesting QF.

4Q: Pliskova with a taste of Svitolina. I can't believe with a couple of good run, Pavly is not yet in the top 16.

the draw for this tournament is riddled with landmines

1. Kerber lands with Kasatkina, who has beaten her twice this year, as a possible 3rd round opponent. Not good for Angie.
2. the 3rd section has 4 wild and unpredictable seeds in it, Makarova however has a good shot at making the QF out of that section if she plays well
3. some bad luck potential matchups: Mugs/Woz, Konta/Keys, Svitolina/Pavs, Strycova/Pliskova
4. Rematch of Venus/Kiki possible in the 3rd round, plus we get Kuzzy/Vinci...again...IW replay there

I really have no clue who will win this. If I had to guess the SF right now I'd probably give Konta great odds to make it that far though.

probably because of her pattern of winning a major every 2 years. She never earned enough points to steadily hold the #1 ranking for a long period of time. Add in her injuries, and that some of her best years overlapped with Henin, Mauresmo, Serena and others all in top slap winning form...not suprising. How many weeks does Mauresmo have at #1? I assume shes in that same ballpark.

21 weeks at no.1 doesn't seem too shabby compared to the 11 weeks Venus Williams topped the rankings. However, Venus, and Sharapova had considerable competition to make their weeks. Kerber.... Hmmmmm

Mauresmo was no.1 for a total of 39 weeks.
Ivanovic actually held the top spot for 12 weeks, 1 better than Venus Williams.
  • For twenty years only 6 women held the top spot.
  • Only Wozniacki has no major title of any description.

???
Jankovic and Safina never won a singles slam. Mixed and ladies doubles slams make no difference.

Since March 1997 we've had 15 number 1's?
Hingis, Davenport, Capriati, Venus, Serena, Clijsters, Henin, Mauresmo, Sharapova, Ivanovic, Jankovic, Safina, Wozniacki, Azarenka, Kerber.

But at least they have a major title to their name - it makes all the difference to their legacies.

Mandy wins. That was not a well-played match. At least lefty can get boozed up tonight now.

Their legs looked nice though.

Bencic/Errani is just a scary match...both former top 10 players who now are so erratic it isn't even funny anymore. whomever wins will likely lose in the next round to.

So Belinda opened at 2-0, dropped 3 straight, but holds for 3-3. Then drops 3 straight games again. 4 games looking to be 5 counting the start of the 2nd set...

I don't know if her game is down the toilet or maybe she's trying to adjust her game with the new coach. If it's the latter than maybe it's just a matter of time until she finds her groove, but this is still discouraging as a fan.

Make it 6 games in a row for Errani. I'll be tuning out now.

Maybe you shouldn't have done that, Bencic took 6 in a row and got the second set 6:4 :)

And just as I finished the sentence Errani gets the immediate break in the 3rd and leading 1:0. What a rollercoaster of a match this is…

If I'm superstitious then I should probably stay away. She's winning while I'm not watching :D

Tsurenko plays just 5 games and retires against the Brazilian wildcard...
Thigh was heavily strapped. Should've just withdrawn. Could've given a spot to someone else.

They moved Gibbsy/Witthoeft to Court 1 from Grandstand because everything has ran long today, Gibbsy promptly drops the first @ 3.

McHale bageled Beck in the third.

Lucie over Wickmayer in straights, Cepelova over Petko also.

BMS/Siniakova playing 3.

Genie/Barty starting now.
