Seriously, I don't believe this last point.

At least one of Konta's shots was a clear overhit and would've gone out had Venus let it. But I get it's hard to see that when you're in the midst of the game.

And she so should have held. Konta got really lucky there.

She needed to let one of Konta's balls go. There were some clear overhits that she hit back. Again, though, I can't fault her too much, I bet that stuff is super hard to assess in the heat of play.

Best shot is to get this somehow to a TB and hope Konta loses it there.

Venus held. If she can just get a break here we might have a match.

Don't think that's gonna happen. I'm betting on another clean service game from Konta. She knows this is hers if she just stays focused.

Of course, Serena pummeled Konta with less than 50 percent of first serves in. But that's Serena. And she was deadly when she did get the first serve in, at that.

The worst thing is that this truly isn't Konta at her best, like at AO until she ran into Serena. Venus could deal with this if she was serving well.

And she could deal with Wozniacki too. Just frustrating.

Konta wins. Congrats to her. Venus was just awful. Konta gives her problems but she had a 3-1 lead in the second set and gave it right back.

Watching straightforward straight set losses is better than this, dammit.

Yeah that was quite annoying. The loss doesn't bother me, as she far exceeded my expectations in Miami and gained hella points. The manner of it though.... Ugh. She so could have won and would have beaten Woz.

Exactly. It is the manner that has me salty for sure.

Jo choked at 5-4 but then pulled it together. Invaluable, confidence-building experience. I wouldn't be surprised if she rolls Woz.

@Aussie Darcy when you get a chance can you update the race to Singapore here including the semis?
I don't want to have to wait til Monday.

Beyond amazing if a Brit could qualify for the WTF - so close last year.
As a successful Brit, if Konta was deemed more conventionally attractive she'd be raking in a fortune in sponsorship deals. That said, if she were, her tennis might suffer. Although, given her attitude, and clear intelligence, probably not.
Congratulations on the win Ms Konta :)

I'm not really sure what it is with Konta but she comes off as boring. I just don't find her interesting. Not her game, not her personality. Just seems really meh. I definitely don't think it's looks. Kuznetsova isn't attractive and neither is Halep (in my opinion) but I love watching Kuzy play and Halep has her good moments.

Konta just seems kind of basic. Like she's always sort of there but she's not doing a lot. Kind of like what Keys, Pavlyuchenkova and Suarez Navarro were doing. Consistent enough, QF's and SF's but just mediocre to watch.

All in my opinion but from what I read on twitter, people tend to be indifferent to Konta.

Like, taking a look at the top 20 and you sort of know what you can get with players:

1: Kerber- 2016 was amazing, her running passing shots rule, she was a brick wall- stunning. 2017- handing wins to nobodies and funny to watch how bad she is
2: Serena- fun to watch, can be annoying, drops sets but almost always manages to fight back. Amazing at slams
3: Pliskova- stunning tennis, great serve, her bad days are so bad though
4: Cibulkova- pocket rocket, lots of running, hot and cold. Lots of fist pumps.
5: Halep- has her moments, plays really good for a few tournaments
6: Muguruza- See, I find her mediocre to watch at times. When she plays well it's fun to watch but when she's bad, it's ugly.
7: Radwanska- ninja, hits hot shots but never does much at slams, only turns up every few slams
8: Kuzy- Amazing to watch, her determination and stamina (end to 2016 was insane). Does kooky things too (cutting her hair on court), she's unique.
9: Konta- boring
10: Venus- she's a veteran of the tour and it's great to see what she can do after all this time and at her age after all the injuries. Loveable personality.
11: Keys- I find her unbelievably boring to watch
12: Wozniacki- look, for a while there I found her boring too. But her good, consistent tennis is fun to watch.
13: Svitolina- plays well against top players, does the hard yards but never seems to be the final winner (except Dubai)
14: Vesnina- I find her unwatchable- the noise, yuck.
15: Kvitova- same as Muguruza in a way. When she plays well it's so fun to watch (Madrid against Serena 2015) but when she plays bad, yikes
16: Pavs- boring to me
17: Stosur- chokes absolutely anything. Past her prime but has her moments. Always good to remember the 2011 USO final.
18: Strycova- unsure where I sit on her.
19: Kiki- I don't like her personality.
20: Bacsinszky- love her story so I tune in for that

Personally I like Konta.
She's British.
And, I like her clear intellect and thoughtful manner.
Regarding her play:
I really like she's making the very best of her abilities.
Not an ounce of talent wasted.
She's a grafter.
And she has beautiful hands at the net - which sets her apart from most.

I liked your list though! I'll comment my thoughts. Great fun!

Woz vs Konta....either way it's interesting. Woz #1 in the race would really get under a lot of people's skin though. Saying that, I'd like to see her win. Since the US Open she's been back, she finally banished her idiot ex boyfriend from her head and it's done her good.

Konta, so far she's proving last year wasnt a fluke, and she's probably got a lot of inside pressure to live up to. I do like her, and if she wins she deserves it.

1: Kerber- 2016 deserved no.1. But don't like her. Never will. 2017- Thus far, embarrassment to no.1 ranking.
2: Serena- One of a handful of legitimate champions. Part-time player that embarrases the rest of the pack. Great reflection on her, appalling reflection on the WTA. Don't enjoy her laboured tennis.
3: Pliskova- enjoy her tennis. Great tennis kits. Under the radar.
4: Cibulkova- can't abide all the fist pumping. And like Kerber, not the most sporting.
5: Halep- Like her. But tactically dire. Regressing.
6: Muguruza- Great when she's on. Dreadful when she's not. Limited. And mentally fragile.
7: Radwanska- long past caring about her results, just enjoy her sublime tennis.A brain without brawn.
8: Kuzy- "Amazing to watch, her determination and stamina (end to 2016 was insane). Does kooky things too (cutting her hair on court), she's unique." Absolutely agree with you. Plus, I get the impression she's a decent sort that's not afraid to speak her mind.
9: Konta- I've covered this.
10: Venus- Like her. Admire her. One of the best dressed out there. Don't like the noise.
11: Keys- If she only had a (tennis) brain. Limited. Despite the valley girl speak, I find her engaging off court.
12: Wozniacki- survivor. And ironic how well she's doing given people were calling for her to retire last year :)
13: Svitolina- Like her. Capable of the odd big win, but like most, incapable of stretches of consistency.
14: Vesnina- Happy for her. I actually find the noise kinda **** take on the shriekers and screamers.
15: Kvitova- A genius. A travesty. But really likeable. She's much more talented than Muguruza!
16: Pavs- "boring to me". Yup.
17: Stosur- she's in my Kuznetsova/Venus category: anything they do now is a plus. They've previously earned their status. AND she's beaten Serena twice in majors, therefore I forgive her any bad losses :)
18: Strycova- feisty!!!
19: Kiki- Hard faced. Prefer her doubles to singles.
20: Bacsinszky- "love her story so I tune in for that" ditto. Absolutely.

That was fun :)

1: Kerber- long delayed breakout year in 2016. Say what you will she deserved everything she got last year winning 2 majors, silver at the Olympics, several other strong results, etc. Now she's going back to pre-2016 Kerber who can't string it together consistently. I think the whole "first German major winner since Graf" thing is in her head and she can't deal with it.
2: Serena- not a fan of her personality all the time however she is one of the greats of the game. Sadly her back and forth "do I care do I not care" attitude seems to have hurt her legacy, and now her body is finally starting to do her in.
3: Pliskova- proved she deserves to be at the top, now she needs to prove she can stay there. She has the game, however when she is bad its a trainwreck
4: Cibulkova- my tiny powerhouse. I've always liked her and am so glad she had the year she did last year to get back into the top 10.
5: Halep- GET IT TOGETHER!!!!!! seriously she's fast, decent shots, however can only do well like...4 or 5 times a year otherwise shes a mess.
6: Muguruza- Another one in the shadow of a former player, except in her case its Vicario. Good when she is on, but when she is off...
7: Radwanska- I'm really beginning to thing she is overrated. for the talk of how much brains she has, she can't seem to use them to win very often.
8: Kuzzy- I think she has more stamina than anyone on this list lately. She's back in the top 10 when everyone though she was done year ago, myself included. Power to her...sadly her head has never matched her heart
9: Konta- So much pressure in the homeland, breakout 2016, and 2017 so far has been a solid follow up. Smart, has class, good game...where will she go..lets see how she handles the pressure
10: Venus- The elder stateswoman of the tour, and no I do not mean that in a bad way. She is the veteran, the class act, the calmer of the 2 sisters. Still fighting along despite an illness that might have driven others off the court totally.
11: Keys- Used to not like her and think she was all power no brain, Davenport stepped in and I'm kind of liking what has happened since.
12: Wozniacki- The great wall of Denmark rising again. The idiot Rory is finally behind her and she seems to have it together. Can she get it back, honestly the way things are now, yes she can.
13: Svitolina- Another favorite of mine and a go to girl in SDL. She had blips of greatness last year after Henin came on board and now she is rising....so happy for her.
14: Vesnina- Another Russian headcase...and a noisy one. I like her, love her in doubles..but in singles she is everywhere. Wimbledon SF, IW winner...losing to young no names other places.
15: Kvitova- Wimbledon wonder now out after a freak attack...I hope she makes it back no one should have their career end like that.
16: Pavs- after she tanked me in SDL I am pretty much done with her. all the talk of how much potential she has and even in one match she cannot consistently keep it together.
17: Stosur- Australias Mauresmo, struggles at home and now seems to struggle everywhere. She has game, a doubles legend (in her generation at least)...another elder Stateswoman still fighting along.
18: Strycova- shes like a female MacGyver, she always tries to find a way with all these tricks and tools. Shes crafty if nothing else and I respect that.
19: Kiki- Really only in the top 20 because of the French Open..after that she will nosedive. I really don't see much in her, shes dynamic and all, but nothing amazing
20: Bacsinszky- Honestly I never knew much about her or really paid attention until a couple of years ago. She has game I guess, shes steady, not flashy. Don't love her but i respect her.

19: you have the wrong Kiki ;) it's Bacsinszky at 19, not Bertens. But definitely agree on Bertens. Once the French Open points are gone, so she will be to.

Also interesting posts from both of you, particularly on Caroline.

@PDJ in particular about Wozniacki and retiring last year. I remember her father said in August or September that a big announcement was coming from her and that she wouldn't be on tour much longer. Since then she's just had amazing results and I had completely forgotten about that. I remember posting on here about it when Piotr (her dad) mentioned retirement.
Also @boredone3456 good point about Rory. Seems she's finally moved on from that part of her life. I see she's now dating an NFL player or some big sporting guy (the guy is massive, maybe baseball?), so that seems to have helped perhaps.

I used to poke fun at her and how she has no wins over a #1 etc but she's doing well. She's someone I genuinely hope wins a slam at some point. Couldn't care less for Radwanska and don't really care if Halep misses out too.

Ever since the US Open last year Wozniacki has turned her form around, kudos to her.

Kudos to Konta for getting past a dangerous opponent, beating Venus these days or any day is still a hard task.

For the final I'm going to say Caroline in 3.
I know Konta won easily at the Aus Open but Konta is a former Aussie and Melbourne brings out the best in her. I think nerves might get to Konta or Caroline will outplay her. Guess we will see.

Bookies have Konta with the slight edge.

I think this is down the line. Konta had huge momentum at the Aussie having won a tune up tournament where as Woz had a few struggles. Although I don't know if I consider losing to Strycova a bad thing to be honest but Gorges was bad.
This time its a switch around, Caro has way more momentum in recent weeks overall. Since the Aussie Caro has been a tennis machine and her results have been positive. If Caro can play that bait and switch game she has been employing pretty effectively lately, I can see that driving Konta crazy. From Halep, to Venus and now Caro...3 different styles. Woz plays a style that can really deal with anything if the opponent is off. Pressure is on Konta here. Woz has won a tournament of this stature before...so we will say. I'm going with Caro, but if Konta pulls it off, I will applaud her.
