Purely because of tennis's strange scoring system.

For example: at 3-2 Fed, Federer had won ELEVEN points on Nick's serve and Nick had won TWO. Nick had played three return games and Fed only 2. Federer completely outplayed Nick over the first five games but the match was essentially tied.

By match's end, Federer had won 19 more points on return (the possible equivalent of almost 5 return games), won 9 more points overall, hit more than 20 more winners from the baseline, won most of the longer rallies, won more points at the net and a greater % of them, won a greater % of points in first AND second serve.

Tennis's archaic scoring system allows big servers to sneakily stay in matches in which they are being outplayed.
Good points. It felt like (apart from the close tiebreaks) Fed was the better player in the first two sets by a big margin. Even in third set too. He was all over the Nick service games right from the start.

As for your last bit i think the archaic scoring system could be a blessing for the tour currently as it would never put the game solely on baseliners' racquets.

Overhyped for sure. I can guarantee that the final won't be half as close or exciting as this SF.

Did you not find the Australian open final half as exciting as this?
Wimbledon 2008? Australian 2009?
I don't think matches need to be super close to be exciting. Fedal matches always are because they're between the 2 (arguably) greatest players of all time. Are you not into their matches?

Please stop gravey training Fed, he is in a different league than Nadal. Fed alone sells the match in any match he plays, nadal needs fed or parents to take their kids to the tournament to be as popular

weird gravy train, lots of steak and potatoes there for Nadal too vs. Fed..please

If that's how you see it. To me it didn't look like Kyrgios taking longer between the serve affected Federer's game. On the other hand, people booing or making noise when Kyrgios was due to serve - I imagine all of that was interfering with Nick's game.

I'm with @AceSalvo
It doesn't matter whether it "looked to you" that Kyrgios going over the limit affected federer. It's cheating. There's a rule and you're not supposed to break it. He not only did that but did it consistently, not more than a day after he hypocritical ly called out Nadal for doing it.
The crowd booing a guy who's acting like a brat isn't something he should be shocked about or outraged.
Kyrgios cheating is an issue and just because Federer didn't make a big deal out of it, it doesn't make it alright.

Fine. Thats a SAD ending because someone called out on Fed's important point as well. Also you are wrong when you IMAGINE that Nick's antics cannot falter an opponent.

Its upto Cheerios to play the game with sportsmanship. He chose not to, crowd responded in kind.

Exactly. I don't knw what planet this guy is living on. When a guy says "I imagine player x isn't affecting player Y with his cheating so it's ok", you can only scratch your head.

Some absolutely senseless posts here.

And crowd factor definitely the x-factor here. Cheering a guy almost every time he misses a first serve at a crucial point is disgraceful.

Cheer Roger all you want, but don't cheer when the opponent misses a first serve. Reminds me of the 2015 USO F.
I said the same in the thread "Nick talent is underrated". Talent will only get you some distance. You have to behave and win the people's support. Crowd support will be a big factor in top level of any sport for that matter when you're competing on thin margins. Expect to see the same with people going behind Zverev in few years.

yes, Senseless on the highest level.

Example:
Australian Cricket players think that sledging makes them more aggressive and this could get them a wicket. Meaning, If I frustrate the opponent he will falter!

Its the Aussie way, a disgusting trait.

KEY BISCAYNE, Fla. -- Roger Federer's season of resurgence took another thrilling turn Friday night when he won a seesaw semifinal against Nick Kyrgios at the Miami Open, 7-6 (9), 6-7 (9), 7-6 (5).

Federer was unable to convert two match points in the second-set tiebreaker but finished off the flashy, unpredictable Kyrgios an hour later.

When Federer hit a service winner on the final point, Kyrgios angrily whacked his racket three times against the hard court. Federer patiently waited until the Aussie was done before triumphantly swatting a ball into the stands.

Kyrgios then gave his racket a fling as the crowd booed before sharing a warm, weary exchange with Federer at the net.

Federer saved two match points in his quarterfinal win over Tomas Berdych. Now he's in the final Sunday against Rafael Nadal, 13 years after their first career encounter, also at Key Biscayne.

There will be a first-time Miami Open women's champion Saturday when Caroline Wozniacki plays Johanna Konta.

Federer won Key Biscayne in 2005 and 2006 and hasn't been to the final since. But the 18-time Grand Slam champion is on the rise at age 35.

He's 18-1 this year, his best start since 2006, including titles at the Australian Open in January and at Indian Wells two weeks ago, and has won 10 matches in a row. None was more harrowing than the latest victory.

A sellout crowd was firmly in Federer's corner, and the big-hitter Kyrgios played the role of unpopular spoiler brilliantly. He drew jeers every time he took his frustration out on his racket, received code violations for swearing and slow play, and complained about the fans when they shouted during a rally in the final tiebreaker.

And then there was Kyrgios' high-wire game, including huge groundstrokes that forced his opponent to play some dazzling defense.

Federer rallied from a break down in the first set, and overcame two set points in the first tiebreaker. He didn't face a break point in the final two sets.

Kyrgios' final risky shot backfired -- a 128-mph second serve sailed long for a double fault. That gave Federer his third match point -- the last one he needed.

The victory was payback for Federer after Kyrgios overcame two match points to win their only other meeting, at Madrid in 2015. That match also was a three-setter with three tiebreakers.

So what? I'm arguing that it wasn't right for the crowd to bully Kyrgios despite his time violations. I did not say Kyrgios' "antics" cannot falter an opponent. It just looked to me like Federer had a problem with Kyrgios' ball bouncing or his slow walk to the baseline.

Yeah, cause booing for no reason and disrupting a player on his serve is the right response to time violation.

No disagreement from me on the bolded. I still stand by what I said though. Booing when Kyrgios breaks the rules makes sense. Booing when he gets screwed by a loudmouth in the crowd is just stupid and spiteful.

Fed got screwed by a loudmouth and Fed was cool and the crowd was cool. Cheerios was jumping up and down like a clown. Crowds come to see tennis not clowns.

Caught you wrong again. You may still chose to fight your fight.

I laughed at Nick saying to the chair that he's bouncing the ball...does he not think that counts? :)...gotta' little Novak thing going there, will it get worse?...has it gotten worse, thought he was a quick player before?

do you think that he was genuinely ignorant or was genuinely pulling the edges of the rulebook testing its strength??

Giving it back like a Queen??
Glad the cameras caught her. Pathetic.

So Kyrgios wasn't as cool as Federer and? That doesn't make it any less stupid for the crowd to boo him after the incident that might've cost him the match.

You wish.
Exactly. It's one thing to call out after a point is over. Its quite another to interrupt a player in the middle of a point. Shameful. This is not Davis cup and even then there is no justification.

Interesting response from Federer regarding a crowd that was booing, yelling, whistling and interrupting during Nick's service games.

In your legend's own words: "Nice atmosphere".

Money (nor GS titles) can buy class.

Officially off the FedExpress bandwagon. Enjoy, folks.

I just think the consistent cheers for missed serves is the worst...again, did it to Berdych too, as opposite from Nick behavior-wise as you can get...the guy isn't doing anything there but trying to compete...the other stuff he's definitely in on it himself, working against the crowd

Clapping for a missed serve happened in Nadal match too.

So what??

Extremely disappointed with his comment but I also hope nick learns from this and develops Novak's 2015-2016 mindset and learns by watching the 2015 us open final.

Someone just get 60's weed and his alter ego out of this thread. I usually laugh at the stupid **** he posts but crapping on Nick after a match like this ?

Well he has reason. K was up 5-4 in last TB with having to next two points. Match really was on his racket. But he lost both points on his serve and the match.
