Some guy thought it would be funny to shout out "I hate you Kyrgios!!" right before Nick is just about to serve. But it's alright though. Nick's acted like a d1ck in the past, so it's fine to disrupt the match like that. Fed's playing as well, so we'll just make own own calls during extremely important points.

Djokovic is nowhere near Kyrgios in terms of notoriety, yet the USO 2015 final was just as bad. It's not Fed's fault, but he does bring out the worst in crowds.

kyrgios built his own reputation. i haven't seen anyone this hated since mcenroe in the 80's.. the crowd may have been rude & unfair but when he behaves the way he does and says things like "i dont owe the fans anything.." what does he expect is going to happen..? how can you blame anyone other than yourself?

Kyrgios expects everyone to be a SAINT like the one he thinks he is.

St. Kyrgios to Umpire: "Do the ball bounce count??" Cmon now, he should know better that the crowds know better.

Can someone tell me what the controversy is about? Missed the match, will watch it when I get home later but very curious what happened. Just saw the scoreline.

Lot of talk about the crowd and such here but did you see and hear that hitting? My goodness.

1) Federer's confidence is showing through in his winning close matches, but also at the beginnings of matches. He is so confident in the first few games and hitting freely. Since the beginning of IW, the few games almost always yeild him BPs and he looks unplayable.

2. Nick's movement has improved and will continue to get better the more work he puts into his lower body.

3. Federer's BH DTL in the first set was so good. He wasn't going for outright winners but hitting it deep and about 18 inches wide of the sideline which then set up easy FHs. A few crackers CC as well. That BH is just a thing of beauty. It will be interesting to see if he begins to hit more slice during the seasons or needs to come over at almost all times to keep his rhythm. There was a beautiful sequence in which they traded four slices and then Fed hit a rocket inside out FH reminiscent of 2006 for a glorious second. He used to draw that short ball off the slice so Michu back then but the new strings allow players to better generate pace off of slice and deal with it better,

4. Nick's service motion is so explosive and difficult to read. He can hit it 130+ out wide on the AD, 130+ up the T on the AD, 140+ down the T on the deuce court. Amazing serve that's much better this year.

5. Federer's reflexes on that BH return are incredible. How many 135+ serves did he put back in play well enough to start rallies? At least 10. Just incredible.

6. Djokovic fans won't like this p, but he played better tonight than he did in his two wins against Djoko.

The sound of their hitting was phenomenal tonight. The quality was very, very high class tonight.
Yeah I couldn't believe how very explosive the sound of their groundstrokes was. At one time Federer was standing near the net, and Kyrgios spanked a lethal & explosive forehand right at Fed, and Fed just copped it with a volley winner. I was worried that Fed's wrist would have been crushed LoL.

Federer was just more stronger and steadier mentally throughout the match. That was the key for Fed to win this match.

LOL, that's putting it subtly. Fed is the crowd favourite wherever he goes. Not even Nadal can compete, AO 17 Final is a great example there. Overwhelming crowd support.

I think what I was focusing on was *his* awareness of both that and the adjustments he still needs to make ... despite the apparent opinions of so many that he might not have any.

:-/

Loved all of it. Kyrgios play and antics were fun and most entertaining. Federer's ability to match all of that and come up with the W was fantastic. The crowd's emotions were buzzing. Even Mirka's dark side coming through was fun.

Great tennis and even greater entertainment. Reminds me of an era past when McEnroe ruled the courts.

This was much better than boring robot tennis.

The classic "It not but it is":
It's not Fed's fault, but he does bring out the worst in crowds

Whatever is happening in tennis since 2001 is "All of Fed's Fault".

Not $***, Sherlock!

If someone is behind in serve points won, they will obviously be behind in return points won (if we are talking about percentages)!

You might expect NK to be closer in first serve points than in second serve points, that was the point. Elementary.

RF was 10% ahead on firsts and just 5% on seconds

The matches between these two will always be tiebreak thrillers. Unless one of them has an off-day. Very exciting match to watch - even if I knew the result and only watched the highlights.

You can't really blame Nick for not withstanding the pressure as Federer played very well every time Nick had a chance to close the 1st set or the match. So my impression that these two players are currently #1 and #2 in terms of level of play sounds right. I expected Kyrgios to win, because Roger looked quite tired against Berdych, but he proved me completely wrong.

Some of his returns ... makes me wonder who is the best returner on tour currently.

When was the last time he said something like that? Were you going to hold it over his head for the rest of his career?

Had you forgotten this?

This?

I love Roger as much as anyone, but let's not behave as though RF is John the Baptist and Nick is The Sins of the Fathers.

This all reminds me of when Rafa started to beat Roger regularly.

There are other people in the thread who've already named what this is, but I'll be kind and just call it ... double standards.

In any event it needs to stop.

:rolleyes:o_O

Playing Kyrgios (when he is playing well, which seems to be more regularly these days) is like playing a version of Isner or Karlovic who actually has the return game to break your serve. Kudos to Fed for stopping this train today. It also really says something that Nick is also 4-0 against Djokovic this year in sets played.

3rd set tiebreak. Kyrgios served for the match at 5-4. He served. Rally. Kyrgios hit a backhand, ball was IN. An idiot in the crowd yelled OUT. Crowd said SHHHH!!! Nick then hit his crosscourt moonball forehand way out wide, as he was distracted by the illegal call by the crowd. He went absolutely berserk at the crowd. He said "Shut Up! Shut The F*** Up!! WTF are you doing???" The Crowd Boooed at Nick. He lost his focus, double faulted, thus failed to close out the match. Federer up 6 5 and served the match out with an unreturnable serve to Nick's BH corner. RF fans went nuts. Lol.

Nick also said shut up several times to the crowd earlier in the match. He also received obscenity warning and time violation warning. He went over the time limit so many times when serving.

Edit: Fed actually was at the same kind of controversy in the tie break of 1st set where he had set point at 7 6 but on Kyrgios serve. An idiot called out and Fed lost the point hitting his FH long.

Anyway it was a really great match. The quality of the match is worth to talk more than the little controversies.

great, appreciate it. Sounds like a do over could have but wasn't called on that point.

Ha ha, just saw the highlights. I thought Fed made an uncharacteristic number of fairly wild errors off both wings. But what cracked me up was the frosty handshake at the net. Kyrgios leaves Fed waiting while he has his tantrum throwing his toys out of the pram. As Fed turns away after the shake I'm sure he gave a very faint eye roll at the kid. Hysterical.

Cmon, you cant challenge a call that late. Delpo took a whole MINUTE! And you are defending that?? Shows the class of people you belong to more than anything.

So the videos you posted compare ever so palely to the following:

"Kokkinakis banged your GF" ??

"I dont owe fans anything" ??

How many times Umpries has requested Fed to speed up play?

Did Fed ask the umpire if he was sure about the rules like "does the ball bounce count for time-between-serve"?

Has Fed smashed a racket 4 to 5 times before shaking hands with the opponent??

Has Fed tanked a match so knowingly??

St. Nick accomplished all this before his 22nd B'day.

No need for the crowd to be as jerky as this towards Kyrgios, he brought his absolute A-game to the match and was respectful towards his opponent and towards the umpire. To tell someone to shut up is in line, when they make line calls and boos every chance they get... I firmly hope and belive he is a world #1 to come. What a repertoire he´s got :)

Awesome match in every sense of the word.

Kyrgios has my full respect after this performance. His game and mentality is developing nicely. Let´s go, Nick

You forgot to mention repeatedly screaming at and bullying ball boys.

I wonder what the wife gained from whistling her husbands opponent. Did she think Nick would hear it? That the whistle would affect the match?

I bet she is a bit embarrassed when she sees herself for that. Feel sorry for fed having a wife that can't control herself while he is playing and making him look bad.

Yes, Nick"lowfived" Fedr when he left his seat. Good gesture.

Smashing a racket like a THUG before you approach your opponent at the net. Bad gesture.

Nick does things the right way only when he feels like to satisfy himself.

Fed has always been supportive of Nick regardless of his antics until Fed declared "I dont have anymore to say". St. Nick knows this deep down.

well, if it was a crowd of 13 years old that'd be the case.
but if you're like 30+ and being rude toward a 20 then you look pretty stupid to me.

watched this longer highlights :

some fine tennis from both , with amazing shots/clutch play ........

How is it possible to hit a volley winner off of a 118 mph forehand aimed directly at you while you stand at the net?

I'd end up with mental trauma if someone hit that at me.

To those with more knowledge than me, have you ever seen anyone do something similar?

I can't understand how this happened:

*Kyrgios Double Faulted in the 1st set to let Federer serve out the set.

*Kyrgios Double Faulted in the 3rd set to let Federer serve out the match!

Exactly. No fan who loves Roger just as much as everyone else would compare Nick to Roger. Then say double standards.

Damn it Nick, why did you have to make so many moronic decisions with the big 2nd serve on big points :( :( :(
Awesome match, worth staying late to watch it, but nasty choke from Nick.

choke ? really ?

in the 3rd set TB , he went for a big 2nd serve on the serve before the DF and federer just got it back ...against most others or if fed was slightly less sharp , it'd be an unreturned serve.

him going for it on 2nd serves isn't a moronic decision when he gets it in so many times.

he saved 6/7 BPs, federer had more of 1st serve points% won, 2nd serve% points won, clearly better W/UE ...the reason the match was close was because of Nick's serve and him being clutch.

have you been reading too much of 90sclay et.al to lose perspective of what a choke is ? :p

But he suffered quite a few meltdowns throughout the match and hit double faults at crucial points in the 1st and 3rd set. It is fine if you do it down BP or if you are not in danger of losing the match right away, but not in a 3rd set TB and not after 3h+ of play.

Federer had quite a few moments when he was tentative and Nick could have taken the match.

Apparently I've been missing quite something during the past night.

What a scoreline, what a victory. No shame for Kyrgios either, apparently give it his all. It's a mere matter of the fellow starting to do some major damage in the sport.
Sorry to read about the crowd misbehaving...

and he could've lost it in the 2nd set itself in the breaker ..instead he was clutch and took it.

saved 6/7 of the BPs he faced.

re : going for 2nd serves part ...disagree ...

a) like I said, he got a big 2nd serve in in the breaker and if fed was slightly less sharp, he'd be up 2 MPs as a result of that.
b) he's capable of it and gets those in mostly ...could be the true successor of this guy in that regard ;)

t=5m44s --> 193 kmh 2nd serve
t=8m7s --> 200 kmh 2nd serve out wide !
