I honestly think Rafa might sweep the whole clay season this year. With federer hid greatest threat now not playing till French. Murray and Djokovic in decline and not what they were. Wawrinka inconsistent and might be done himself. The other young players are good but they not ready or good enough to beat him on clay.
He's not gonna win 5 events in 7 weeks at the age of 31 on such a demanding surface, get real.

It's too early to talk about and Nadal might likely go awol after the clay season, but he actually has a decent stab at finishing YE #1 if he keeps up this consistency with Federer perhaps skipping the clay season and Djokovic and Murray out of bounds.

Still need to wait to after the clay season to make my prediction. Speaks volume about how bad the tour is, as Nadal doesn't look much better than he did last year.

Oh no on top of it ARV popping pills. Part of the trouble with waiting to watch just latter stages of tournament; you can get some duds.

I've watched the whole tournament man

It's cool, you've invested a lot of time trying to prove how great this era and the coming generations are. Must be hard to have it blow up in your face on a weekly basis.

ARV just been trolling Rafa with some rope a dope. Now he's going to up his level and leave the Bull stuck in 2nd gear. Amazing gamesmanship by ARV; masterclass, no?

Nadal still playing relatively tentatively off the ground IMO, as he has all tournament (especially in the 1st set, ten he steps it up a bit).

but he's serving quite well, especially for him, hitting all 4 corners this week.

Still not close to the best clay court game i've seen from the king of clay, yet very solid with a few flashes of brilliance thrown in, which is enough to win for Nadal on the dirt (especially with a draw that opens up).

So you thing every match has been this bad?

If neither Djoko or Murray turns it completely on and Fed doesn't steal another slam, he could be the best bet. Obviously, he's had a fair few years, where he hasn't done much post RG, so in that sense it's quite early to speculate.

No...are you being deliberately dense? o_O

I said it was an awful final, not tournament. The SF's and F (so far) haven't been good quality though - I blame Cedric Mourier for one of those though.

Aren't you deathly afraid that RAFA might play too much again this year and hurt his fragile body before the French open...........he is playing so good, that is only worry at this point...... Like he did last year ??????????? lol
I will let you worry about Rafa's fitness.

His baseline game can be better but he didn't need to play better so far, and his wall impression is still there. The serve is indeed a great sign for him going forward. This is his first tournament on clay, he'll likely get better. He may not even need to.

Haha. Sorry good. I've enjoyed this tournament save that post Mourier bit and this first set. Looks ARV has finally settled down and Bull has someone to be great against (or not.;))

Even though Rafa is a fair bit removed from his best clay court days, he's still showing he's a natural on the surface like few others.
The forehand, the court sense, the gets, the patience, the ability to reset the point with a 'moonball', the sliding, the knowledge of when to move in and when to pounce. Well done.

WOW,, this will be like #10 in Monte Carlo and #10 in French open......... isn't that like Fibonaccici number king destiny happening this year ??????????????

Basically Nadal is a lock to sweep the clay events except Madrid.

This hyperbole is hilarious. He's already overplaying on clay at the age of 31 and will pay a heavy price for it later on. It doesn't matter that Djoker or Murray won't beat him on clay, he will be upset by someone like Fognini or even Verdasco in earlier rounds due to FATIGUE. He's not sweeping anything at his age.

In addition, why are people claiming his form is so imperious when he's played a bunch of mugs in this tournament? And yes, Goffin is in that category when he mentally wilts and gives up after one lousy call.

Well kind of a shame ARV flushed the whole first set and now down a break in the 2nd this is not looking too good.

Thanks for coming ARV, you had a good run

My point is, the draws will keep opening up for him in the upcoming events.

Rafa will lose some matches on clay this year, I would imagine, but if Djoko doesn't show up, he could come close to a 'sweep'. Even though he's far removed from his best, he's still better than the current 2017-field.

So, Nadal playing poorly is still enough to straight set ARV. I can't watch, but I see the scores. Nadal FTW. Pretty much what I figured would happen. Let's hope the CGOAT manages his schedule well heading into RG.

Really agree with this. Nadal is playing very well, but he's definitely beatable for your reasons. It will take more than Fognini or Verdasco. Nadal has fixed his serve game and seems to be holding quite well in this iteration.
