I'm sure this match is going to be rather hyped, it is quite an interesting match up for sure.

The young Canadian defeated Del Potro in straights, while Rafa dispatched Coric with no problems.

Rafa will be Shapovalov's first top ten opponent of his career, huge match here for Denis, in front of a home crowd no less.

Nadal will be way too much for Shapo to handle at this stage, despite the crowd support. I hope he plays inspired tennis and proves me wrong and can put up a much better fight than Coric.

Let's see. Nadal loves to attack the backhand, but instead Shaps will hook his forehand wide to Nadal's forehand; really sounds like the perfect game to beat Nadal ala Fiasco. Denis will menace Rafa, losing in two very respectable sets.:p

Will be difficult for Nadal. Denise is playing on home turf. The thing that speaks against Denise is that lost gen and next gen usually lose the match after a big win.

Luv me some Shapo of Things To Come but this is a bridge too far at this time...6-3 6-4 if Nadal wins the toss; reverse the score line if The Hat serves first.

This kid reminds me of Rafa at 17. Especially when I look back at the Puertas match. They are both Capybaraesque if you ask me.

Hope Denis can push Nadal, even if it is only for two sets. If he finds genuine consistency on serve Nadal will struggle to break with any regularity. Obviously should still win, though.

Actually that can be a very interesting match. Shapovalov is a lefty with a one handed backhand. He can actually cause Nadal many problems if he plays well. I hope he doesn't though. ;)
Sad it is too late and I will not see it.

Can't stay up for this one, it's too late here. May just watch the first few games - am expecting a routine win for Rafa.

This is already Shapo's best performance at MS level ever. He's exceeded expectations, I doubt he will be able to challenge Nadal let alone beat him.

Moment of truth. I smell Nadal bullying Shapovalov and getting an early break, to stamp his authority on the match.

Let's see.

I think winning that second point hitting some good groundstrokes could help Denis settle though. Was a bit surprised to see Nadal miss tbh.

Well, have to give the young guy credit for that hold. Should help settle the nerves.

Maybe this won't be a massacre after all.

At least the kid has decided to go out there and take it to the humble and beautiful legend — that's what you wanna see.

Anyone else getting the impression that Nadal is walking a bit funnily between points, like he doesn't really want to bend his legs? Got that impression at Wimbledon already. I don't remember him doing this back in the day.

Apparently he's been pulling 3-hour practice sessions here though, so must be healthy and fit.

I thought he usually does that when he's missed some sort of opportunity or a shot that he should have made, etc...
