Despite the loss, Kerber has no points to defend til Miami.. Will play Dubai next week and then Indian Wells. Still a shot at getting back to number 1. Yikes, 2016 looking like a once off.

I'm really, really enjoying Kasatkina's game. She defended herself exquisitely and turned her defence into offense flawlessly. Kerber was flabbergasted in that last game. Fully deserved win.

So for the QF we have:

Kasatkina v Puig
#4 Aga or Caro v qualifier Davis

Stosur v #3 Cibulkova
Zhang v #2 Pliskova

5 seeds out, could be 6. One qualifier through.

You have to hope Pliskova steps up this year (much as I like some other players, they've been around quite a while). I don't care who jumps on me, but it's looking bleak for the WTA thus far in terms of challengers.
It's very hard to get excited about womens tennis. And more or less impossible to support any one not called Williams.

Your last two sentences are painting with a VERY broad brush. We don't all just root for the front-runners.

I don't doubt you're right, but at this very moment in time, I think it's ridiculous that an approaching middle-aged woman is the only player with any level of consistency.
Maybe the WTA should become part-time: it clearly works for it's out and out best player.

Bad smash miss by Radwanska after constructing the point so beautifully.

Wozniacki deserved that break solely for that superb passing shot. I thought Radwanska had that point in the bag.

I'm totally envisioning Radwanska losing to Wozniacki. I'm very optimistic today!

Yeah, my sixth sense for defeats works like a charm. :)

Wozniacki was much more consistent in her service games and was somewhat more aggressive without committing many UFE.
Let's celebrate Woz's win with something danish:

That kind of doesn't make sense haha. We have the challengers, that's why we are getting all these shock results. Coco over Kerber, Kasatkina over Kerber X2, Svitolina over Serena and Svitolina X2, Lucic-Baroni over Aga etc.

The problem is them then backing up the big wins and winning the tournaments BUT, we are seeing breakthroughs, Lucic-Baroni and CoCo made the AO SF, Muguruza won the French, Cibulkova won the WTA finals.

Serena still wins the big things but the top 10 are making strides. Obviously this week is different but it's only a small Premier.

And of those players, how many haven't been around for ages? Svitolina, and to a point Coco Vanderbluss.
It will be a shock when they follow it up consistently. It's so frustrating.
As I said, the ONLY consistent player, plays part time. How on earth can this reflect well on the WTA?

I just think maybe we are in an age of a lack of consistency. Both tours. I don't mind it but I can see how it's annoying.
Kasatkina is a fresh face but I note your point about them existing for ages before breaking through. Kerber took like a decade, CoCo took years, Bencic rose quick but fell just as quick.

Time for Stosur v Cibulkova.

Stosur holds a dominant 5-0 lead over the H2H. Hopefully she continues it today. Played for 2 hours and 10 minutes only a couple of hours ago. Could be tired. Probably will be, we will see.

The lack of consistency can't be an accident that happened at the same time in both tours. I insist in the idea that it's probably structural.

And MLB (whom I admire and respect) was in the semis at Wimbledon in 1999! That's quite some breakthrough!
And the men are more consistent in that it's a handful that contest for titles. And generally the same names go deep. That's not the case for the WTA. Kerber did it, but has now collapsed. Keys was reasonably consistent at majors last year. But never really challenged.
I'm pinning my hopes on Pliskova.
Yes, some can knock off big names, but clearly not consistently enough to be challenging for No.1, whilst the revolving door at no.2 continues for how many years?

Holy, there literally may not be a single fan at this match. LLD doesn't even have anyone to wave to after the handshakes.

So few people at the Stosur match earlier that she ran up to like the only fans and gave them her wristband (instead of just flicking it in the crowd like they usually do). She shakes hand with the father and laughs at something (probably a joke about crowd size).
