Oh my. PCB retires.

Truly been cakewalk stuff for Nadal this tournament. Hope it doesn't come back to bite him in his ass. Usually he's been tested before semis.

Bad news for Pablo, but for totally different reasons not great for Rafa either. You don't want to go into a semi final, with that little tennis/match testing under your belt.

RBA is a fine clay-courter, so he already faced good players.

But he's too good right now.

Pablo has just retired. As I have just read above! And there's me thinking I was up to speed. Jeez you guys are good.

Bad result for stats lovers. This messes up those funny, pointless comparisons between years, should Nadal win it all.

Pity about Carreño, he played a great match against Raonic and this match would have been, at the very least, a big learning experience for a guy of his age and ranking.

I actually think Agut's best surface is indoor hard.

Nadal certainly seems like a level above everyone, but he's also not faced opponents who trouble him. As far as I recall the only time he wasn't tested before the semis, where he went on to win in recent years was in 2012.
On the flipside he'll probably be fresher than Djokovic/Thiem slugging it out at the moment.

Feel bad for PCB.
Not sure this is good for Nadal actually. No chance to further hone his game.
The level of tennis Djok adn Thiem are playing is stellar.

wow. pretty disappointed by the retirement by PCB. lame schit!

Bautista-Agut is not a good clay-courter. It is his worst surface. The only success he has had on the surface is against other players who suck on clay.

He's not totally wrong. RBA's best surface is hard courts (highest career W/L, most number of titles, wins against better players on hard). That's not to say he isn't a good clay courter, he definitely is.
Exactly, and that's what I called ********.

I love how people are saying that this isn't good for Nadal. A 31 year old getting extra rest in a slam, how is that bad? Fed got the walkover over Kyrgios in Indian Wells, and that seemed to work out well for him. Can't imagine Rafa not having to play a tough match is a bad thing, especially in a best of 5 format. A healthy and rested Rafa Nadal on clay is a nightmare. Yes, Thiem is playing well, and beat Rafa in Rome, but this is a whole other bag of burritos under the hood. Rafa was pretty worn out going into that match, and it was a best of 3 format. A healthy and rested Nadal in a best of 5? Good luck, Mr. Thiem. I'll be the first to applaud and cheer if you take down the King of Clay in his court, but I just don't see it happening this year.
