Rafael Nadal outlasts Grigor Dimitrov, reaches Shanghai semis

SHANGHAI -- Rafael Nadal tied Andre Agassi for sixth place on the list of all-time Open era wins when he reached the Shanghai Masters semifinals on Friday.

Juan Martin del Potro, meanwhile, injured his left wrist on a nasty fall during his quarterfinal win and headed to a hospital for a scan.

Nadal topped Grigor Dimitrov of Bulgaria 6-4, 6-7 (6), 6-3 for his 870th match win. Nadal also improved his win streak to 15 having won the China Open last week. In Beijing, he defeated Dimitrov in a three-set semifinal.

Nadal has yet to drop serve in Shanghai.

Dimitrov extended the quarterfinal to a third set when he rebounded from a 4-2 deficit to win the second-set tiebreaker.

In the third set, Nadal saved the one break point he faced in the match in the fifth game, and broke serve in the sixth to set up victory.

"Winning a lot of matches in a row, so I'm very happy for everything," Nadal said. "Of course, being able to win the US Open, Beijing, and being in the semifinals here ... I have to try to keep focus and hold that momentum. We'll see tomorrow if I can have another good day.

Del Potro, who has undergone surgery on both wrists, conferred with a trainer as he repeatedly shook his wrist. He wound up breaking Troicki's serve en route to securing his third semifinal berth of the season, though he's unsure if he'll be able to play.

"I don't know how my wrist is after I fell down," del Potro said before leaving for a local hospital. "I felt something wrong in that moment, but I continued to play, just playing (backhand) slices just to finish the match. I'm going to the hospital to see what the MRI says, and what the doctor says.

"Then I will take a decision for tomorrow. I would like to play and be 100 percent."

He advanced to play No. 2 seed Roger Federer, who beat Richard Gasquet 7-5, 6-4 in his quarterfinal match. Del Potro beat Federer in the US Open quarterfinals earlier this year.

"I hope for him (del Potro) that it's nothing serious," Federer said. "He's had problems in the past and this is why he's worried, rightfully so. At the end of the day nothing changes for me, I'll be ready to come out here to play, and it's for revenge for the US Open."

Cilic advanced to his first Shanghai semifinal by beating Albert Ramos-Vinolasof Spain 6-3, 6-4.

The 25th-ranked Ramos-Vinolas ended Cilic's streak of winning 21 service games in the sixth game of the second set.

"I was a little bit angry with myself just with not keeping up the good tennis at that moment," Cilic said.

Wow, how often have we heard Fed using the word revenge?

Fed's quite the quote machine this week...if he and Rafa win tomorrow (and Fed will play after, so he'll know) it'll be interesting if he lays a little bulletin board material out there for Rafa

honestly, feels like he's trying to generate a little excitement for the tour in the fall when some interest falls off

Revenge against a maybe injured player seem little too harsh from even Federer.
Think about this forum if Rafa said something like that

I notice Nadal really doesn't like it when fans make themselves the story...some players might laugh that off but he is ticked...of course after Seles anything like that, especially right around the court, sets off alarms

My guess is Del Potro won’t play tomorrow....Here’s the latest.

Very sad Delpo news :(.
I watched a few sections of the match and was commenting myself how he seemed to have recovered his BH form and start hitting less slices. I must've watched it before he fell.

Was looking forward for a great rematch with Fed. Even if he ends up playing, he'll probably be tentative with that wrist.

I'll be very surprised if he plays tomorrow. Rotten luck seems to dog him constantly where his fitness is concerned and almost always when we think he has finally recovered some form.

Cilic said it was very gusty today so maybe that's the main reason why Fed and Rafa didn't look as sharp today (of course credit to Gasquet and Dimitrov as well):

suppose if it's 2hbh left wrist all he's to do is be able to theow ball to serve, if there's no major problem in there he can hit ohbh 100%.

good chance he will/play/won't play, depending.. not everyday a masters sf v Federer comes along. but then it is his wrist so......

"More serious problems were ruled out." REALLY hope that's the case.
We need the big man ready for 2018!!

It would appear if Nad wins this he would have more masters titles than anyone else. Im sure this has been posted before but who searches for that.

RANKINGS UPDATE:

Dominic Thiem (#6) and Marin Cilic (#4) will move into new career high spots next Monday.

Deserved by Cilic but not by Thiem. It kinda irritates me that players who don't do anything to achieve it keep moving up the rankings instead of down!

I have experienced similar irritations. Up till a month ago some guy kept a very high ranking, despite the fact I hadn't seen him win a match in 9 months (ok, I wasn't watching him that closely but still). This guy entered tournaments he eventually didn't even play, imbalancing the whole draw in the process leading to the weakest slam final in my watching history.

Yes, but that particular guy didn't keep moving up the rankings and he did win a title and kept going deep in Slams except for the last one which he tried to play but couldn't . Big difference.

AP:

"The Shanghai Masters wants to expand to a 10- or 11-day event, increase its draw size from 64 to 96 and raise prize money to more than $10 million, starting in 2019.

The ATP board is expected to discuss Shanghai's request next month.'
