Told you guys Nadal wasn't going far in this tournament. He might get through this but if he does he'll get destroyed by a bigger hitter.

I really don't care tbh. Win or lose, Rafa Nadal is fun to watch and that's what I want out of tennis matches. After last year's boring slog-fest Murrovic "battles," I dare not complain or nitpick exciting tennis ever again.

Eh, who cares? Match was up and down, gave my nerves a bit of a thrill and Fed still won. Personally, I'm enjoying it immensely :D There's no such thing as a "perfect" Federer and there never was. Even when he was on top of his game in 2007, he managed to lose two hard court Masters in a row to virtual nobody Willie Cañas and then another two HC Masters in a row to David "spare flat tire around the waist" Nalbandian. Federer's entertainingly hilarious :D
to be fair, he was on the decline in 2007

Just sitting here watching this match, and I can't stop looking at Rafa's thinning, sad looking hair. I think he needs to go baby bottom bald. Maybe it'll help him get his quick first step back!

No he wasn't. I remember that year vividly. Federer always was weak against retrieve-everything grinders (see one losing record to pre-aggression Nadal) and clean backhand ball strikers vs his OHBH. You can't call it a decline when the man wins three Grand Slams handily, one of which he won without dropping a set.

He got a hair transplant this past offseason and it's actually much better than last year. Before you ask, yes that really did happen and no I'm not trolling.

Didn't know that! Thanks for the tidbit. I still think he should let it go. Lol. I wise man once said, "You gotta know when to hold em, know when to fold em..."

ehh i'll say he was at the tail end of his peak. declining doesn't he completely declined btw. but he was close to the end of his peak and it showed in a lot of ways followed up by 2008 which sort of cemented the end of his peak imo

Sure, it all ended in 2008 what with him then reaching all 4 Grand Slam finals in 2009, winning two of them, 5-set finalist in the other two, and finishing year-end #1. Sounds like a dream-come-true off-peak season

also nalby is always regarded as a player who was one of the most talented to not win a slam, for whatever its worth.

So, we knew the transition from the OldererGen to the NxtGen (skipping over the LostGen) was going to happen at some point in the future, but it seems to be starting a bit sooner than I expected. We're not there yet, but is this USO the canary in the coal mine?

Warning: semi-sacrilegious comment coming up.
I'm beginning to wonder if the strong half of the draw is actually the weak half of the draw.
(said half in jest for emphasis)

I think you are right. Bottom half looks strong now with good hard court players left in that half

Federer said that back problem and messy preparation were both problems for him earlier. Now back is fine.
And if you believe that....

You really like your hyperboles BeatlesFan :p.

Fed's first serve speed in AO Final 2017 - 185km/hr
Second serve speed in AO Final 2017 - 147

Today first serve speed - 180
Second serve speed - 150

Also
12 mph = 19.2km/hr.

So yea....

EDIT: Not suggesting Fed is 100% ok or the back isn't the issue. Just make of these numbers what you will.

You are so wrong. Fed's average serve speed was 105 MPH today which is pathetic for him and unlike you, I will provide a link for proof:
http://www.usopen.org/en_US/scores/stats/1209ms.html

"Hyperboles?" Really!?

confusing peak for prime here.
I don't think you understand that those two terms can be used interchangeably. Besides, there wasn't any real drop off in Federer's speed or prowess once he got healthy from the mono a few months into 2008. His "peak/prime/whatever" only ended because Nadal and Djokovic finished maturing into world-beaters on all surfaces (for a few years, anyway)

This is embarrassing....

For you.
Read it again. That's 105mph "TOTAL" average - i.e. first and second serve speed combined together. An entirely useless statistic.

FIRST SERVE average - 112
SECOND SERVE average - 93

So no, I am not wrong. I looked at the exact same link to provide you the numbers I quoted in my original post.
And yes, hyperbole indeed.

Good tournament for both old men and young boys so far: four men aged 35 or more in the last 32 (!!); three boys aged 20 or less as well.

Federer (36), Mahut, Lorenzi, and Lopez all 35+.

Coric (20), Rublev (19), and Shapovalov (18) all 20-.

Lets say Nadal wins the US Open this year, who had the better year him or Federer?

Each would have 5 titles including 2 Slams and 2 Masters plus 1 other final but I'd give the slight edge to Nadal because he has played all through the year and at each of the 4 Slams whereas Federer skipped the entire clay season. Obviously the remaining season ending tournaments will conclude how they will finish the year.

I've been hearing Dog has been fighting back against these match-fixing allegations in Winston-Salem

When asked for his reaction to the spike in betting on last week’s match – which the Spaniard won 6-3, 6-3 before losing to the world No40 Paolo Lorenzi in the second round – Dolgopolov replied: “You want my honest answer? I don’t give a **** to be honest, because it’s like a circus.

“I think I should be asking you guys how you feel about your fellow journalists writing about maybe there’s a fix in the match because there is a market. I read the article. It was like the statistics of my break points. Are you serious? You are going now to the statistics and saying it might be fixed because there is a market? Are you writing news or fairytales? I go on social media and every time I have to delete 10 messages because people are doing threats, stuff to the family.

“So, for me, I don’t want to even talk about it. I talked to the TIU. I respect their work. I gave all the information needed. At the end of the day, what’s going to happen is I’m not involved in anything. That’s going to be what happens and these guys are still going to write that ********. For me, writing those things before there is an investigation is silly.”

He was in no mood to be placated, and added: “The press talking about match fixing. Let’s talk about facts. There is a TIU that does their job. If they find something, good, let’s talk about it. Before that it’s a pity that the guys are writing and hurting people’s image without anything, just a betting pattern. How do I have anything connected with that? A guy got drunk who went to bet one million and I have to answer every time or someone has to answer different players.”

He insisted he had tried his hardest against Monteiro but was below par physically.

“I was giving my best effort. I wasn’t playing my best. I was doing a lot of practice before [arriving at Flushing Meadows] because I wasn’t feeling good against [Nick] Kyrgios in Cincinnati. I was physically weak. I blacked out in that match. I wasn’t happy with my physical condition and I knew by New York I needed to get some work done. Obviously you want to be ready for the US Open at the tournament before. I was working hard and playing [despite] tiredness.

“I’ve spoken to the [TIU] a few times. They gather a lot of information and it’s strange they always find nothing. There’s so much match-fixing we hear about, so many markets going on, and they never find anything? That’s surprising.”

Asked if he had ever been approached by gamblers, he said: “Er, no, not really. I don’t have a lot of friends on social networks. If you give your phone too many times, probably … But, no, not that I remember.”

When it was put to him that his answer sounded like he had been approached, he fumed: “Sounds like why? You want go to predictions? You want to ask a third time? I come here after a five-set match and all you ask is about betting patterns. Can you ask something normal? I don’t want to answer stupid questions.”

If we exlude Federer and Nadal, the draw seems like a very, very deep ATP 500 event and offcource Del Po would get the hardest possible combination of R3,R16 and QF while two italians would play each other :)

So who is playing worse so far, Federer or Nadal? I know Roger list 4 sets and Rafa only 1. But the quality of opponents is different as well I think, so it doesn't seem so clear cut.

Both will be hoping to do better in future rounds.

Id give the edge to aged at this point by like 5- to 49. He's been very up and down, but has faced a more motivated competition. Feds lows have been extreme lows, with him making horrific errors and decisions, but the Highs have been pretty good too. Nadal has been dropping his forehands incredibly short and generally hasn't been very impressive either. I hope Shapovalov can consistently produce his form and results though. Would be incredible to see him lifting this title. Overall it's a very weak, but very competitive field right now, with Dennis perhaps the best of them all

And you're clueless, or a troll, or currently residing on Stevie Wonder or Ray Charles Avenue. Or you've never seen a professional men's tennis match.

Here are the facts: Federer in 1999 at the age of 18 (with all his attending inexperience on big stages and emotional baggage) wins this Youzhny match in three comfy sets.

This is the GOAT who has won 2 slams at 35. Please point to one single stretch of play today where he looked a shadow of his usual self?

Wut. I don't know what to say to that! I don't think Fed played well.

As simple as that lol

Its feds groundstrokes his biggest problem and I think if he plays a hard hitter he will be in trouble, so will his back. He downplays his injury. If opponent focus on grinding him w a lot of power ala tiafoe feds in big trouble.

Cilic ?del porto?
Ahaa Cilic huh. Every time I look up scores of contenders on my phone they are already out. I forgot Cilic though.

Not considering Del Potro at this stage though, too injury prone I think, I believe he is a very much diminished player even from last year. From no fault of his own of course, injury is horrible.

Is anyone other than Nadal and Federer even left?!?!

Thiem is still in I believe, he could be in with a very good chance.

Anyone left?

Mr Sensation himself, Shaps is still around. The real heir to the throne.

It seems every time Federer is pushed, the injury excuse surfaces rather quickly - just like Montreal. I am sure if he loses then that would be it. This just takes away any credibility on his opponents' part.

What's the general take on this tourney, overall? Draw torn to bits. But to the chagrin of some, Federer and Nadal remain in the hunt. Are you folks happy with the signs of life (Shapovalov, et al.)? Or do you feel like we've been robbed of some intriguing matches to come?

I am pulling for Shapo big time, though he's not going to win it but tennis badly needs him to advance for future tennis. If Fedal goes out, then this tournament will become one hell of a tournament by default.

For me, Shapo winning USO would be like Pete winning USO. Magical!

What an insane run that would be. 10 consecutive matches ftw.

Wonder if I need to start paying attention to Rublev.

I fully believe he picked up an injury at 2-2 second set in the Montreal final. Would he have won if he didn't? Probably not, because he was already losing, but he was trying to wrestle control back at the start of the second, credit to Z, he managed to hold him off. But after that point, he was clearly struggling, and the fat lady was about to sing.

Here, I think the back is much better, it is lack of practice and match play that is his undoing as far as his own level is concerned.

You are not the only one pulling for The Shrapnel.

Would love to see him win here.
