Final slam of the season and it's shaping up to a be a real good one.

8, yes EIGHT women in contention for the number 1 ranking.

They are: Halep, Muguruza, Svitolina, Pliskova, Wozniacki, Konta, Kuznetsova and Venus. And here are the scenarios:
2017uso_no1chase_new.jpg

Pliskova is the top seed and world number 1 for the first time at a slam. Halep is the number 2 seed. Remaining seeds in order are: Muguruza, Svitolina, Wozniacki, Kerber, Konta, Kuznetsova, Venus, Radwanska, Cibulkova, Ostapenko, Kvitova, Mladenovic, Keys, Sevastova, Vesnina, Garcia, Pavlyuchenkova, Vandeweghe, Konjuh, Peng, Strycova, Bertens, Gavrilova, Kontaveit, Zhang, Tsurenko, Lucic-Baroni, Gorges, Rybarikova and Davis.

Defending champ is Angelique Kerber and Pliskova is the defending finalist.
Mattek-Sands and Safarova were the defending doubles champs but Mattek-Sands is out with that awful injury from Wimbledon. Safarova plays alongside Strycova and is playing her first slam as the #1 in doubles.

We finally get to see Sharapova's return to a slam after she missed RG with no wildcard and missed Wimbledon due to injury. We haven't seen her play since Stanford where she played just 1 match where she won in 3 sets before giving a W/O. And oh boy did we get a popcorn 1R for her. Simona Halep 1R...

Quite a few withdrawals or absences: Serena, Azarenka, Errani, Shvedova, Mattek-Sands, Stosur, Bacsinszky, Siegemund and a few more.

With the absence of Azarenka, Serena and Stosur, only Kerber, Venus, Kuznetsova and Sharapova are former USO champions. Joining them as former slam champions in the draw are: Muguruza, Ostapenko, Kvitova and Schiavone. So just 4 former USO champs and 8 former slam champs in total.

Now to the draw: Some real juicy 1R matches.
None more juicy than (#2) Halep v (WC) Sharapova.
#27 Zhang v Lisicki
#26 Kontaveit v Safarova
#6 Kerber v Osaka
#29 Lucic-Baroni v Puig
#13 Kvitova v Jankovic
Watson v Cornet
#31 Rybarikova v Giorgi
#21 Konjuh v Barty
(PR) Sloane v Vinci

So who's going to win the final slam of 2017? Also feel free to post who you think will finish the USO as the new or existing number 1!

I see Halep or Muguruza finishing the tournament as No. 1 but not winning the title.

I tend to think the USO winner will be someone who has been flying slightly under the radar the way Ostapenko and Muguruza did. Even Serena had a shaky leadup (losing to Brengle) prior to winning AO.

Muguruza will probably win it. While she isnt the most consistent player she seems on a bit of a roll now and will want badly to get to #1 in emphatic fashion.

If Pliskova beats Halep in the final, Simona would be number 1 from monday:D Oh the irony, how many number ones the Wta had without a Slam - Pliskova,Wozniacki, Safina, Jankovic. Radvanska and Halep were one win away, Davenport was a long time number 1 without holding a Slam. Clijsters?

On topic, go Simona

Now the question is, who will reach their first GS SF?

Do you still have the table showing every GS there's always be first time SFist? @Aussie Darcy
My wild guess would be from most likely Svitolina, Konjuh, Kontaveit.

I want either Pliskova or Halep win the title. But I strongly sense Muguruza is getting the final victory.

Voted for Muguruza.

Bad news for her fans though, it appears she has received the TT WTA Slam Poll kiss of death.

Based on form shown so far, Muguruza is the easy favorite. But not betting the house on it because I don't yet trust her to be truly consistent.

Agreed with whoever said it would be someone who has been under the radar. I'd love to see Konjuh win it.

Madison might be the dark horse.

how do you know she won't serve Halep off the court ?? she could do that you know, Halep has been off lately
On and off. Can't just say off given that she did go deep in Cincy and Montreal.

I would never bet the house on Simona against Maria but Maria is far from top form whereas Simona's form is fine, she's just a headcase in big matches which 1R isn't.

Gee, the Americans sure love hyping up Madison.

Yes, she beat an in form Muguruza and won a Premier title, doesn't mean she's going to somehow scrape past; Mertens (tough 1R), Vesnina 3R, Svitolina/Dasha 4R, Ostapenko/Kerber QF, Pliskova/Aga/Kuzy SF and then Muguruza/Halep/Woz/Venus/Konta/Kvitova in the final.

She's never gone past the 4R before and a lot of her year has been impacted by injuries. I can't see her winning 7 tough matches back to back..

I'm so excited! I'm off tomorrow and can wallow in tennis and underwear all day. 11:00 am is 5:00 am here. Got DirectTV recently and have 6 channels dedicated to different courts plus one that shows all 6 at the same time (plus able to select specific courts to watch at the same time), can't wait to try it out. Plus whatever espn is doing. I know blah blah free streaming, espn3, etc, but I love my big beautiful TV and the convenience of the service. And I love being off!!! I am so ready! I REALLY wish Serena was playing (and Vika to a lesser extent) but still interested in a lot of the remaining players. And on the positive, when Serena's out I feel no stress.

Unless that's new for this tourney, don't think this is right. I've had Direct for a long time, never seen this feature. The rest is badass though.
Dang. Well I saw they had 7 US Open channels 701-707. They say Available Soon or something like that. I guess I'll find out tomorrow.

701 is the split-screen, 702 is the ESPN coverage for some reason (never understood why they do this when you could just go to ESPN), 703-707 are different courts, but 703 is Ashe which is usually the ESPN coverage on 702. One cool thing is the extra channels come on an hour earlier than the daily ESPN coverage.

Thanks! Not quite as exciting as I thought, but still better than I had. I'll take it! :)

Can't see Madison having the fitness to actually win a slam.

Great minds think alike! I put both in the final, but Svitolina has faired pretty well against Muguruza, so I gotta back her in the final. :D
if she plays like in Toronto she can win the whole thing

Svitolina is the only top 10 player has never reach a gs sf (was close at rg that choke argggg!!!)

Svitolina will finally have her moment. I think Elections na takes this. She is ready.
Right,,,, Svitolina should win this one. but then there is Mugu and Halep. Mugu doesnt' like NY and Halep also chokes in NY. is there any American that can beat her ? not really.

Other possible first round upsets:
A very tired Gavrilova plays Allie Kiick
An exhausted Cibulkova plays Jana Cepelova
Good news for Gavrilova: she's not playing today. OK news for Cibulkova, at least she plays late in the day. She has the tougher match up of the two though, and an earlier match. I hope she survives! (sorry Cepelova..)
