If the same players show up for the final that showed up for the semifinals, Keys will run away with this tournament. She just never took her foot off the gas and didn't give Coco any room to breath. I don't think Stephens, should Keys show up in that form, can hang with her... Still, very excited to see both of these ladies vying for their first GS title. Hopefully nerves won't make for a lame match.

Sidebar: Lindsey Davenport seems to have had a profound effect on Keys. Am I the only one noticing that she seems a different player. Hopefully, it's long term.
It's interesting in that both players are coming off injuries where they missed considerable time, Keys two wrist operations and Sloane a foot operation. They both seem more focused.

I kind of agree, Keys power may be too much even for the speedster Sloane. Still, she'll have to get them in and so far she's been able to do that better than anytime before in her career.

Considering that Key has a similar very aggressive game as Venus, I think the matchup Key-Sloane can bring an outstanding performance from both players. Of course Key's game is much more impressive due to it's aggressivness, but when you face a perhaps less spectacular and highly defensive, tactical and very intelligent player as Sloane you have to watch out what you bring on court. IMO Key might be in trouble if relys exclusively on her power tennis.

Since Keys has pretty much always relied on her power tennis it could be trouble! :)
Still, she's shown more patience since returning. There's still the occasional stretches where'll she go blasting balls everywhere but in. As you say, it could be a great show. It's a good contrast in styles.

rofl, this aint hating someone because they like a different player or they like a different sports team or prefer chocolate over vanilla? voting for someone or defending someone who basically is a hateful, sexist, racist, incompetent pig who has incited hated crimes from the minute he decided to run for office and just turning a blind eye to everything is a huge reflection of character and defending someone like that is not the hill to die on. this bs about how "oh its just their political views" is such a flawed view

I see you hate punctuation? Best to leave one's political views, and personal insults against the players, out of a tennis forum. Hypocritical of your boy to constantly be calling out other members, on hateful personal insults against players, yet he does the same thing. Hopefully, you two geniuses can understand that. ;)

If Madison shows up like she did in the semifinal, she will blow Sloane away and it won't even be close.

What kind of things can RAFA academy offer these pros when they get there ?? Is there any special training routine or something really special to improve their level ?

I was thinking the same thing. First set Madison would be unbeatable. She was serving AND playing so well. In the second set, the games were more competitive as Madison's serving percentage went down, and her U.E went up.

Sloane will play how she did against Venus. Get everything back, go for her shots when the percentage is there, and wait for the U.E's. Sloane was more aggressive when the match was on the line, late in that third set. She not only handled the pressure well, she destroyed it. Probably exceeded her coaches expectations.
Hopefully a good match. I'm going with Madison in 3.

I too think it will probably go 3. The only scenario I don't see is Sloane winning in straights. Keys in straights or anyone's guess in 3.

my boy? try harder please. you must be one of those people who think calling people racist, sexist etc is worse than actual racism and sexism.

Damn, Venus is playing pretty well too o_O missed the match.

it was a very up and down match, but there were some excellent shots from both throughout the match. Venus managed to turn it on in the 2nd set but unfortunately was never able to sustain it and it always felt like sloane was in the driver's seat because venus was making way too many ufes and was not nearly as aggressive as she should have been. It's been a great tournament for her and a great year and she still remains an amazing champion. I truly hope she will be able to pull it together one more time and have a great run next year to ultimately lift up a grand slam trophy.

Do you mean first time slam finalist or first time USO slam finalist?

I meant that there will be 3 years in succession of first time US Open finalists not necessarily first time Slam finalists as Kerber was already Australian Open champion but it will indeed be a case of first time Slam finalists for 2 of the last 3 years.

Phew, that was tricky! ;)

If Keys is in god mod she will blow SS right off the court.

The question in my mind is how will Maddy come out of the blocks.

I think we may see a let down and her level of play will be subpar for the
first set.

I also feel like she peaked in the semi and won't repeat that in the final.

Just watched the highlights of Williams-Stephens (because it was on at a crap time for me). My respect for Sloane has gone up by leaps and bounds. Loved these 3 incredible points deep into the 3rd set where she was potentially close to losing:

Agree on a possible very strong start from Madison.

If I could compare Sloane with a more known player that would be Radwanska. Aga has clearly more experience, but Sloane has more power (and this could be the difference that could bring her several titles in her carrier). Both excelent in defence game and very versatile players that can come up with plan B anytime. What stuns me of a player like Aga, and actualy also Sloane watching the match, is that they always do the right shot and are always correctly positioned on court. These are players that hardly take a wrong decision on court. A sign of high IQ!

My prediction. Sloane in 3.

I had to miss these matches because of work. I'm excited to read all these comments. I quit caring about Keys and Sloane a while ago (Keys' many idiotic errors, Sloane's boring error-filled pushing in spite of having good offensive weapons). The frustration, coupled with their seeming indifference (I know outsides don't necessarily reflect insides of course), made it hard for me. But it sounds like we now have solid version 2.0s, and I'm really happy to hear that. Was not rooting for either to be in the final, but if things are as I've read in this thread, then I'm on board for it :)

As we have seen so often in the past, getting to the top is the easy part, staying there is the challenge. Hopefully these American women, and Sugarpova, can maintain this high level of play. Give MaMa Serena a run for her money next year. :D

I watched both matches on catch up this morning.
I kept wondering if/when Venus would run out of puff.
Sloane was a wall in that third set.
Madison did play lights out.
Coco didn't seem to have answers tried serve volley a bit but to no avail.

Version 2.0's, I like that.
A final to look forward to.

Let hope it's a good one.

Maybe they figured out where Pliskobot got her upgrade last year :)

Kalin, you better slay :) who u rooting for?

SS... because she is so pretty. Yes, I am that shallow.

Having said that, I think Keys is very nice and would not mind her winning. I think we did get a very interesting, albeit unexpected, final.

If I could have chosen a winner from all entrants, it would have been Kvitova. But I hadn't realized that Keys has had her own shares of injuries, so good on her to have such a great comeback.

I picked "other"'in the poll, so....

BTW, is it just me, or does this emoji look exactly like Martina Navritilova watching a Serena match at Wimbledon?

I think that was already a given the day the tournament started :)
It's also gonna be more exciting that either if the men's finals from Wimbledon or the FO.

This has been a tremendous tournament on the women's side. I'm not originally a big fan of the women's game but this tourney has turned me around. I suspect the next few years the women's game is gonna be far more fun as the old generation dies out slowly, the LostGen is ineffective as always and the next gen takes a few years to peak.

Ah, come on, no need for such drastic measures... I'll just settle for their immediate retirement ;)
I'm bored of the big 4 including Fed who I love. We need some young blood. And the next gen guys are exciting. Great mix of personalities and playing style.

So hope you're right.

Edit: Imagine a top 4 of Zverev, Kyrgios, Shapovalov, Thiem competing for each slam. What a contrast in playing styles and personalities. Would be amazing.

And if Angry Nick doesn't make it we always have Angry Andrey to take his place :)
How could I forget him.

At the same time the women's tour is thrilling. Venus beating autoimmune every slam. A bunch of young American players playing well. Masha showing her greatness. A host of great players like Aga, Muguruza, Pliskova. And mommy Serena to make a comeback.

Apparently there was some real drama in the women's doubles SF between Safarova/Strycova and Hradecka/Siniakova.
During a rally, Siniakova hit the ball and it touched Hradecka's hair which impacted how the ball landed on the other side of the court and meant Safarova couldn't get to it and they lost the point which gave the other team triple BP to then go up the break and serve for the match. Barbora/Lucie argued that it touched her hair but Hradecka stayed quiet and the umpire didn't do anything.

Video here:

Apparently at the end of the match which Safarova/Strycova ended up losing in the very next game, Barbora supposedly called Hradecka a 'pig and a f%^king *******'.

You can see in the clip below she says something in Czech to them at the net but I don't speak the language. But a few on Twitter who do said it translates roughly to that.

Only if it is green :)
She's always wearing similar looking sunglasses in the stands with that exact look on her face. To me it looks like about 20-25% admiration/respect/enjoyment, 20-25% jealousy/other unpleasantries, and 50-60% "Meh. I could take her"/"I'm better."

Can't wait to watch when I get better coverage. Thanks :)

This year a 36 year old, 20 year old, 23 year old and either a 24 or 22 year old are the slam winners on the women's side. The fun has already begun! :D

Puff! There goes that strong sense of unity inside the Czech Fed Cup team.
(Seeing Safarova failing to add another GS doubles title to her tally is rather unpleasant too)

The timing of this is good, I should get home from a football game right on time. Hopefully espn actually show it properly anyway

Are you going to UNC?

I honestly think that ESPN are doing a decent job in showing the matches. I have Directv Now ($35 a month), and I have full access to ESPN, ESPN2 and ESPN3 whether via Apple TV or Ruko. In the first few rounds, I could watch whatever match I wanted, and didn't have to stick to what ESPN and ESPN2 are showing. No complaints.

Well, Aga is terrible now and seems like she has one foot in retirement.

But you're right that it has really been thrilling. Venus vs Serena in a slam final, a 20 year old fighting back from a set and *3-0 down in the French Open by hitting every line in the book, Muguruza getting her second slam and finally establishing herself with consistency, Kvitova's comeback, Keys and Stephens.

Yet we're still waiting on Vika's and Serena's comebacks, and a Sharapova at full strength.

Aga just got married like a month ago so could still be a bit distracted but yeah, great year so far!
