3rd slam of the year.

Exciting tournament coming up.

Quite a few topics of discussion at the moment:
Azarenka will play her first slam since her return from pregnancy, former 2x champ Kvitova will be in the draw in just her 3rd event back on tour. Former QFist Sloane Stephens also returning to tour for the first time this year after injuries. Drama with Sharapova not getting a main draw WC and then saying she'll play qualies but then withdrew due to injuries. No 2x defending champion Serena as she's off with her pregnancy.

Seeded players in order are:
Kerber, Halep, Pliskova, Svitolina, Wozniacki, Konta, Kuznetsova, Cibulkova, Radwanska, Venus, Kvitova, Mladenovic, Ostapenko, Muguruza, Vesnina, Pavlyuchenkova, Keys, Sevastova, Bacsinszky, Gavrilova, Garcia, Strycova, Bertens, Vandeweghe, Suarez Navarro, Lucic-Baroni, Konjuh, Davis, Kasatkina, Zhang, Vinci and Safarova.

Lots of dangerous unseeded players:
Barty, Kontaveit, Vondrousova, Peng, Cornet, Puig, Errani, Bouchard (not really but she is a former finalist..).

Withdrawals so far: Serena, Siegemund, Stosur, Shvedova, King and Tomjlanovic.

Number 1 ranking is on the line in singles between Kerber, Halep, Pliskova and Svitolina.
Pliskova is the hot fav to leave Wimbledon as #1. She's only defending 70 points from last year whilst Kerber is defending 1300 and Halep is defending 430 + 280 from her Bucharest title.
Svitolina also only has 70 points to defend but she needs to win the title and have all the others lose like 2R. She also needs Pliskova to not win Eastbourne. Not happening.

Defending doubles champs were Serena and Venus but they're not playing as Serena is pregnant. Seeds include: BMS/Safarova, Makarova/Vesnina, Hingis/Chan, Babos/Hlavackova.

Mattek-Sands/Safarova will try to win the non calendar year grand slam. They currently hold the 2016 USO title, 2017 AO and 2017 RG.

So, who will win? Also, i'm shaking up the poll and not doing the top 8 seeds as I believe players like Kvitova and Venus have a higher chance of winning the title than Cibulkova and Radwanska.

Come on man. Wozi in the poll but no Queen of the Mugs?

Just wait cause we're gonna be singing "Mugu on Sunday", cause she'll be in the finals and winning. Okay probably not but I can hope.

Oh ****, she dropped so far down the rankings I forgot about her. I only scrolled a little on the ranking list and saw Venus and Kvitova next to eachother and then was like ahh I gotta stop or i'll have to cut some more. Was tossing up cutitng Kuzy for Radwanska considering the latter has a Wimbledon final but her year is so shocking that Kuznetsova deserves it more.
Was thinking of ditching Woz as she's never gone past the 4R but she's like #6 in the world and she's in the Eastbourne SF so she's in good form. I was even considering Svitolina but she's in contention for #1 so leaving her off would be pretty harsh!

I think two dark horse have a chance to take the 2017 Wimbledon title: Ostapenko and Azarenka.
Ostapenko is currently the 7th fav for the title whilst Azarenka is the 8th fav. Not really dark horses but I see where you're coming from.

BET365 odds as of 30/6/17:
Pliskova $5.50
Kvitova $6
Konta $12
Venus and Muguruza $13
Kerber and Ostapenko $15
Azarenka and Vandeweghe $17
Halep $21
Keys $23
Mladenovic, Svitolina and Ash Barty $26
Wozniacki and Radwanska $34
Cibulkova and Rybarikova (????) $41

Other interesting ones:
Bouchard and Safarova $51
Lisicki and Kuznetsova $67
Vesnina $67 (SFist last year)

Gotta say, real interesting one this is.

What's crazy is that this is the Queen's 20th Wimbledon.
What's epic is that even if/when she loses, she will have won 1/4th of those ;)

My god the draw is insane. Talk about some juicy 1R's:

Barty v Svitolina (rough for both)
Radwanska v Jankovic
Puig v Bacsinszky
Riske v Stephens
Pironkova v Errani
Petko v Cibulkova
Lisicki v Konjuh
Giorgi v Cornet
Kristyna Pliskova v Vinci
Azarenka v Bellis
Sevastova v Poots
Suarez Navarro v Bouchard
Vondrousova v Peng.

And the potential 2R's:
Kerber v 2013 SFist Flipkens
Kuznetsova v Makarova
Pliskova v Rybarikova
Mladenovic v Sloane
Kasatkina v Kontaveit
Wozniacki v Pironkova or Errani
Keys v Giorgi or Cornet
Konta v Vekic
Vesnina v Azarenka or Bellis
Suarez Navarro or Bouchard v Peng or Vondrousova!

Kvitova, my favorite here, makes for the most difficult top-8 draw first for Konta (4th R), then for Halep (QF). Enough said.

Why don't the slams seed their qualifying rounds better? Krunic [1] vs. Martic [16] playing for 1 spot when there are a bunch of unseeded matchups.

Talk about some seriously bad luck for either Svitolina or Barty. Unbelievably rough to draw eachother in the 1R. Svitolina was one of the top 5 favs for the tournament and Ash was one of the top 15.

Should be a good one though.

Wow, Sam Sumyk not coaching Muguruza at Wimbledon, instead 1994 champ Conchita Martinez will coach her. Sumyk and Muguruza will be back together in Stanford though. @fundrazer

That is certainly interesting. I don't know if he influenced her to change her game as much as some fans think, but I've never liked their interactions. People on tennisforum think he changed her style to something like power grinding. Like she just hit consistently bigger than the other girl and control center of the court, when before she was a bit more of a basher. But since working with Sumyk she seems grouchy on court a lot, and we've all seen those coaching timeouts. Don't really understand why they've stuck together for so long.

I did really like the aggressive play from earlier in the year though. Maybe can give Sumyk credit for that.

Anyway...Curious to see how she is mentally in her first few matches. More relaxed and confident Garbie could be serious threat.

Did you miss Konta's back injury? Sharapova isn't playing. Somebody pointed out as well that Mladenovic only passed first round of Wimby once. She'll probably win a few rounds here (didn't see her spot in draw though) but I don't think she's anything close to a favorite.

Kerber's gonna have to get through Mugu possibly. Could be interesting.

It is a bit surprising. I don't like her serve, but it is above average for WTA. Although her slam results as a whole are very underwhelming. Only 2 QF appearances, 3rd round being her best performance at Wimbledon. We'll see what happens. I don't like her though. Wouldn't mind seeing another 1st round exit for her :D

As a sentimental vote I'd love to see Konta do well, but sadly she's injured so it isn't likely this year. I mean its been 40 years on the ladies side since the Brits have had a champion and Konta is their best bet in the last 30 years probably to win the thing.

This year is so wide open, no Serena or Sharapova, Kvitova playing well but still on the comeback trail, and Venus is always a question mark on the day in terms of how her body responds to the conditions. I think we may see another first time major winner here because really, there doesn't seem to be a clear cut favorite for the title.

In another thread I said my favorites were: Kvitova, Venus, Konta and Pliskova, but now looking at the draw I'd probably say

Venus- Decent section of the draw, Cibulkova is erratic and Konjuh is still new to the scene. Strycova is a crafty vet who could be a problem if Venus is off, and then Lisicki is stuck in there as well and we all know Wimbledon is the one tournament she might play well at. If she plays well her first real test might not be until the QF.

Woz/Pliskova- I give them even odds now. They are set to face off in Eastbourne, and are scheduled QF opponents at Wimbledon. Woz doesn't always do well on grass but heck she just made the QF of the French where it took the eventual champ to bounce her, so who knows. Woz has Kiki, who could probably beat her if she makes it to her but her own Wimbledon results aren't great. Pliskova has Pavs...who can beat almost anybody on a given day then lose it the next round. Whomever wins in Eastbourne might be the favorite in this quarter to make the SF

Kvitova- with an injured Konta in her section her odds just went way up. There is no one else, if she really brings her grass court best, who SHOULD beat her before the QF. The QF could bring her Halep/Vesnina (if she keeps it together, big if) or maybe even Azarenka (although this seems unlikely). Sevastova dangeroud floater for the QF as well.

I dunno who will come out of Kerber and Kuzzy's sections. to many potential bombs there. Kerber has potentially Safarova and Muguruza just to get to the QF, which is a tall task if they both bring it. Kuzzy will probably wear herself out before she gets to the 4th round, I can see her vs Makarova going 3 hours easily. However otherwise her draw looks easy.

total gut reaction, probably wrong, but QF match-ups

Muguruza vs Kuzzy (Radwanska might surprise me though...)
Pliskova vs Woz (maybe Kiki....maybe)
Venus vs Svitolina (I feel pressure may make Ostapenko struggle here)
Kvitova vs Halep (I think Azarenka is to green right now in her return and Vesnina is a mess...although maybe Sevastova will surprise me)

I would also not be surprised if I got all of these wrong haha

Wozniacki now in with a shot at the number 1 ranking. She needs to win the Eastbourne title and the Wimbledon title but still a small shot.

If Pliskova wins the Eastbourne title, then both Wozniacki and Svitolina can't be number 1 after Wimbledon.

Look i'm going to go out on a limb and not tip Venus to do that great. She's got a pretty damn easy draw to make the QF but I just don't rate her chances. Hasn't played any lead up grass tournaments, had this drama where her car crash has killed someone which i'm sure is on her mind... I'm not rating her to go deep.

Players i'm keeping an eye on:

Kerber- it's crazy that I feel like overlooking the world number 1, but based on form, can you blame me? We always knew her clay season would be bad but she's back on grass and she's the defending finalist so she's one to watch. Number 1 ranking on the line. Easy first two rounds before her projected 3R against 2014 SFist Safarova. 4R looming with 2015 finalist Muguruza. Definitely a tough one there. QF is a bit easier- could be Radwanska (who's in poor form), Bacsinszky, Lauren Davis (having a good year) or Kuznetsova (hasn't made a Wimbledon QF since 2007 but can never be discounted).

Muguruza- great draw until the 4R. 3R looming against Bertens, could be far worse. 4R could be Kerber and QF the same as over. Tough. But she's a former finalist, quite a threat. Had the shocker last year but we'll see how she goes.

Pliskova- seems pretty much a lock that she'll leave Wimbledon as number 1. She's never gone past the 2R but that was basically every slam for her until her USO run last year and since then she can't stop making slam QF's. Definitely one to watch. Decent draw although Rybarikova in the 2R could be a challenge. 3R against seeded Zhang isn't bad. 4R Dasha or Pavs is pretty good too.

Mladenovic- Been in great form this year. Looked fearless at the French. Has four 1R losses at Wimbledon and one 3R loss in 2015. Draw is quite rough though. 2R against Riske or Sloane, 3R against Coco, 4R maybe Woz/Kontaveit/Pironkova/Kasatkina

Vandeweghe- Loves the grass, QFist in 2015, 4R in 2016. Has two grass titles, four top 10 wins. Same section of the draw as Kiki so it's quite rough, 3R Kiki, 4R against any of the names mentioned above.

Kontaveit- Unlucky to just miss out on a seeding. Had a fantastic year, won a grass title just a few weeks back. One of the biggest unseeded threats this year. Draw is not bad. 1R Arruabarrena, 2R Kasatkina/Zheng SaiSai, 3R tough against Caroline/Pironkova or even Babos/Errani. One to watch.

Pironkova- loves grass, never one to discount. Former SFist and also a QFist at Wimbledon. Has wins over Pavs, Radwanska, Bartoli, Zvonareva and Venus x2 at Wimbledon.

Wozniacki- currently in the Eastbourne final on grass, having a fantastic 12 months. If she wins Eastbourne she actually has a shot at the #1 ranking. She's never been great at Wimbledon, never gone past the 4R. But given her form, i'm watching her.

Lisicki- former finalist. Only just played her first tournament back at Mallorca where she beat Bertens and Rogers. Decent draw. 1R against #27 Konjuh, 2R Begu/Broady, 3R Cibulkova, 4R Strycova or Venus. Probably won't go far but loves grass.

Venus- don't think she'll go that far but always one to watch. Decent draw though until the 3R against Strycova, 4R against Cibulkova but her form is shocking so she probably won't make it that far.

Ostapenko- reigning French Open champ who loves the grass. Definitely a threat. Good draw til the 3R against maybe Keys or Giorgi/Cornet. 4R against Lucic-Baroni/Svitolina/Barty.

Barty- great form since her return. Made the Birmingham final with wins over Vondrousova, Strycova and Muguruza and she pushed Kvitova to 3. Won the doubles there and in the Eastbourne doubles final. My biggest unseeded threat. Super rough draw against 4th seed Svitolina though. Decent draw if she can get past her though until the 4R v Ostapenko/Giorgi/Keys/Cornet.

Svitolina- in fantastic form. Also in contention for the #1 ranking as long as Pliskova doesn't win Eastbourne. Never gone past the 2R at Wimbledon though from her 4 tries. One to watch though.

Konta- playing very great, especially at home. Has that injury she got in Eastbourne though which is a real question mark. Good draw too.

Kvitova- Will only be her 3rd tournament back but she's looking good after winning Premier Birmingham. 2x former champion. Definitely one of the biggest contenders. Great draw, especially if Konta ends up looking bad with the injury.

Bellis- Made the Mallorca SF on grass, French Open 3R where she beat last years SFist Bertens and won a set off Wozniacki. Tough opener against Azarenka, 2R against last years SFist Vesnina but i'm watching!

Azarenka- I don't think she'll go far to be honest but i'm just glad she's back on tour. Tough draw. Bellis 1R, Vesnina 2R, 3R maybe Sevastova or Watson. 4R has Halep looming.

Halep- QFist last year, number 1 ranking on the line, former SFist. In decent form after making the French Open final before having that crushing loss. Also had a rough loss to Caroline in the Eastbourne QF but still one to watch.

That took a while to post! I'm sure I missed some but yeah, good draw.

That potential 3R match between Ostapenko and Keys will be rough for the balls. If balls could talk, they would probably beg for mercy at some point.

I picked Kvitova to win but it could just as easily be Pliskova

Players I'm keeping an eye on: Sabine Lisicki, Qiang Wang, Anett Kontaveit, Jelena Ostapenko, Kirsten Flipkens, Vika (I have all of these ladies making at least the 3rd round on my draw)

I actually have Kontaveit making the QF, same with Ostapenko.

My pick for surprise early exit: Radwanska.

Her dip from 2015 to 2017 is just amazing. She looks like a shell of her former self. I think this will be most apparent at her favorite slam.

I'm really not sure on the winner here. Reckon it might be another long shot a la Ostapenko, looking at you Sabine... if its one of the favs though I hope Pliskova wins it, enjoy her game a lot. Laid back with easy power.

I'm a fan of hers, but I agree with your assessment. Consistency, the basis of her game, is gone. She now makes a whole lot of really silly mistakes: misplaced drop-shots, bad approaches, persistent short balls...

I agree her form of late is shockingly bad. She's currently #40 in the race to Singapore. But in her defence of a potential early loss, she has a tough 1R against former #1 Jankovic.
2R against McHale is much easier as Aga leads the H2H 5-0. 3R against Timea and 4R against Davis or Kuzy will be very tough.

Oh and Wimbledon is getting aired on free to air TV here in Australia! :D

Same in the US. Wimbledon is treated much better than the French Open for some reason.
Here in Aus we only get the Aus Open, Wimbledon and Davis Cup on free to air. I guess Foxtel (Murdoch's pay tv channel which is our only pay tv option for the whole country) has the rights to everything else. Or they just don't care.

ESPN picks:

Cliff Drysdale - Konta
Chris Evert - Petra
Kurt Streeter (?) - Karolina
Brad Gilbert - Karolina
Patrick McEnroe - Karolina
Pam Shriver - Petra

http://www.espn.com/tennis/story/_/...-our-experts-pick-their-winners-championships
Not bad. The surprise picks ranked 17th or lower to make an impact aren't bad either.

Cliff Drysdale - Keys
Chris Evert - Coco
Kurt Streeter (?) - Vika
Brad Gilbert - Coco
Patrick McEnroe - Coco
Pam Shriver - Safarova

They should've made it 'unseeded players' though considering Keys is the 17th seed and Coco is the 24th seed. Wouldn't be that shocking for them to go far. Would've been cool to see unseeded players they think would go far considering every slam since the 2014 AO has had at least one unseeded player make the QF.

Dipping into the Robson V Haddad Maia.
Tough time Laura me thinks
Laura's serve has been a inconsistent for 5 years now. She choked away the mixed doubles gold medal at the 2012 Olympics.

She's been healthy for a while now, winning a 25k last August and a 60k in May. She's just not that good.
