Another week, another big tournament.

Lots of top players participating in Rome.
Seeds in order are:
Kerber, Pliskova, Muguruza, Cibulkova, Konta, Halep, Kuznetsova, Svitolina, Venus, Keys, Vesnina, Pavlyuchenkova, Mladenovic, Strycova, Bertens, Lucic-Baroni.

Defending champ was Serena but she's off tour with her wonderful pregnancy! Defending finalist is Madison Keys. Defending doubles champs were Hingis/Mirza but they have since split up.

Many popcorn 1R matches:
Lucic-Baroni v Safarova
Pavlyuchenkova v Stosur
Makarova v Vinci
Cornet v Errani (why you say vamos)
Strycova v Kasatkina

Quite a few good looking 2R matches as well:
Sharapova v either Lucic-Baroni again or Safarova
Stosur or Pavs v Sevastova
Siegemund or Osaka v Halep
Makarova or Vinci v Cibulkova
Puig or Poots v Konta
Suarez Navarro v Pliskova

The full draw is located here, qualifiers aren't placed yet

Speaking of qualifying, quite a few great players in action.
This includes Gavrilova who forgot to enter in the main draw and therefore has to play qualies!
Other players in action include: Pironkova, Ostapenko, Ash Barty, Bellis, Barthel, Vekic, Petko and Cirstea. Bouchard was also meant to play qualies but I guess withdrew?

Anyway, should be a great week. So who do you think will win?

I think I'll vote someone other than Muguruza...Maybe I can jinx somebody else for a change.

(Two tournaments, two votes for Muguruza, two first match losses)

I'm just going for other as it seems more likely! Although Mladenovic is looking great ATM.

Holy ****, Mladenovic really not holding back on Garcia.
Wow. She's fast becoming the new drama queen of the WTA tour.

Also, the fact Nastase was allowed on court for the Madrid presentation has drawn widespread criticism.

WTA released this statement:

Madrid organizers better watch themselves.

Ash Barty playing qualifying at the Premier 5 Italian Open. In her first round she won a tough 3 setter against 10th qualifying seed and world #68 Zheng Saisai. She won the 2-6 6-1 6-1. Quite a fightback.

She's now playing world number #46 Ostapenko. Ostapenko just tried serving for the set 5-4 but Ash now has break point!

And she breaks right back. 5-5.

WOW, Ash Barty breaks to love and wins the first set 7-5. Ostapenko served for the set at 5-4 and just had break point in the previous game by Ash to serve for it again but couldn't convert.

Wow.

Ash with 7 aces and 2 double faults.
Ostapenko with 0 aces and 3 double faults.

Wish I had a stream.

Had that problem yesterday during the Madrid final. I was actually pretty annoyed that Simon bothered to issue some statement regarding Nastase when it was almost impossible to watch the match...I know it's not the case, but to me it felt like he was trying to draw attention away from the fact that the bein deal + not having streaming coverage has been a total disaster for them.

It was also funny because WTA site had some post about "10 things you need to know about Halep vs Mladenovic," quite a few people trolling WTA on twitter asking if one of them was a way to actually watch the match. Got a lol from me.

And is Mladenovic being asked about this Garcia stuff constantly or what? I know the reporters are a bit obnoxious, but this doesn't make her look good imo. Even if they are still harassing her...it's been brought up so much at this point that it's not hard to say something like "we're not playing anymore, and that's it. end of story." The last part of that quote is also totally unnecessary and snobby. Gives me another reason to not like her. If my poll votes are truly cursed then it will be going to good use for Rome.

Mladenovic is such a *****.
She's always showcasing her polyglot ability in instagram, make me sick. But she's probably the most popular around players tho. Especially those 20 and under gang.
Hopefully Garcia get it together and smacking Kiki's on the 2nd half of this season.

Stosur loses to Pavs in 3. Ranking is going to tumble hard and fast after the French. Unless she can make a 4R, QF, SF again or more. Unlikely though.

Kasatkina slides coming to net and rolls ankle on the garbage lines. Had to retire vs Strycova. Trash Roma courts?

Gavrilova knocks out Keys in a result that was not at all shocking.

Keys was the defending finalist, I think her points had already come off though. She's still 13th in the world somehow. I swear she's never playing. She's an enigma.

Konta thrashed Poots 6-3 6-0, proving her top 10 worth. She's now number 6 in the world btw.

Straight set wins:
Kontaveit defeated Petko.
Sevastova won over Begu.
Ostapenko beat Rogers.
Bellis over Doi.
Makarova thrashed Vinci 6-2 6-1.

Bertens won in 3 over Niculescu.
