It is ON! Odds are against my girl Laura, but let's see if she can win a few games!

Edit: not a bad start, I guess

Mladenovic wins the second. Siegemund's level dropped a bit, though. Her drop shot and net game lost their bite, her serve faltered and she committed quite a fair amount of UFE from the baseline.

But she already has the break in the third, with a fine ROS to win her first break point.

After Kiki won the second set so easily I had thought that she would run away with the third. But it's 4-4 in the third and I'm not sure who will win. It's a really good match and I like both players. I guess tennis wins!

This is unbelievable.. how long has it been since a player has received a point penalty for time violation? and what a time to do it too ..

corrupt umpire

WTA is not wimpy like the ATP. Must serve in 20 seconds or less after the last point. No Walkabouts!

The crazy, inconsistent times of Laura Siegemund:

Had that great run to the final last year where she won 7 matches straight from qualifying to the final (wins over Pavs, Halep, Vinci and Radwanska).
Backed it up a week later when she made the Madrid Masters 3R as a qualifier. In qualifying she beat Kristyna Pliskova and Brengle and then in the main draw beat Kuznetsova and Lucic-Baroni.
She then won just 2 of her next 7 matches.
Then made the SF in Bucharest, won a title in Bastad, made the Olympics QF (wins over Pironkova, Zhang and Flipkens) and USO 3R.
She won one match in Wuhan and then began an 8 match losing streak (Ranging from Wuhan 2R in September 2016 until Dubai in February 2017).
Won one match in Dubai then lost 2R and then lost 1R in Indian Wells and Miami.
Made the SF in Premier Charleston (wins over Tsurenko, Venus, Safarova and Sevastova).
Lost 1R in Biel.
And then of course, just won the title in Stuttgart.

In a 12 month period, she made a Premier final as a qualifier with three top 10 wins, made a tour SF, a week later won her first title, made the Olympics QF, began an 8 match losing streak. Made another Premier SF (including a top 10 win) and then won a Premier title.

Topsy turvy.

Got to see the final on a round up on YouTube. I also watched the Masha v Siegemund semifinal.
The former shrieking long and hard - too long for me. She should be called out on it.

Anyway the final - Good match. Could have gone either way.
Cute little sighs rather than ear piercing shrieks from the girls - so nice to watch / hear. At the loudest in the third set it was like a quiet version of Fleetwood Mac's Big Love:)

Yes, Siegemund can look a little crazy

but we'll forgive her that.

I'm gonna say it

This final so far was the match of the year on the WTA,and there were some good matches in Australia

We saw power, variety of spins and angles, touch, net play....a bit of everything and mostly all at a high level

If either Sieggy or Kiki could find this form consistently across surfaces they could have some great success.

It was a hell of a match.

It's interesting Laura is a psychology major in University given the fact that it took so long for her to break out in her tennis career and given her skills it must all come down to her mentality and belief

I unfortunately didn't see it (get your streaming act together, WTA!) but it seemed like it was the match of the finals across both tours this week, at least judging by the scores.

I wonder how Garcia feels, given she ended the doubles partnership with Kiki to concentrate on singles, and now Kiki is outgunning her.

Me at 1:58 every time someone comments on grunts

Does Evian also distill a vodka? That broad is so f****** (I don't want to say stupid, because she's at least shrewd; I don't want to say confused, because speaking out of both sides of you ass isn't necessarily because you're confused. You could be a habitual liar.) full of 'it. She says they "put on a good show", then gets all pissy, feminazi over criticisms of the noise SHE makes. If she were so concerned about putting on a good show, she wouldn't act like such a c*** (I really hate that word, but she's THE perfect example of one) when someone brings up HER aesthetically unpleasing "orgasmic high-pitched grunts", or how she/they look.

Like I said, "habitual liar". Too much partying, not enough clear thinking. And we all know you'll do "ANYTHING" to win Wimbledon, the Australian Open, etc. Cut your poor mother's throat, take a 10 minute timeout for an anxiety attack, what ever. Nothing's too low for you. We got it. Li Na got it, and gets it, you self-righteous hag. I really hope her poor baby doesn't have colic, because I sure as f*** wouldn't want to be at that psycho's mercy.

For every Assastanka, there's 20 who keep their holes shut when they hit the ball. FYB

Gosh! You really don't like her!
Can't say I do either.

The tan line is bizarre! I know it's from her headband, but I've never seen similar on other players???

Come on, Maria's played 3 matches. They weren't exactly against the best of the best players as well.. Having her as co-favourite seems a bit excessive.
She's not even in the main draw unless she gets a wildcard (which seems unlikely). So she'll have to play 3 qualifying matches and then 7 main draw ones to win the title.

I'm not shocked by Muguruza's odds. As you said, she's the defending champ. Secondly, she regained some form this year with the Brisbane SF, Aus Open QF, Indian Wells QF, Miami 4R etc.

As for who i'm picking? It's tough. Despite what I said about Maria, she is a real threat but can she win 7 and maybe even 10 matches in a row? I don't know.

But here are the players i'm keeping an eye on:

Muguruza - all the reasons I said earlier.
Halep made the RG final in 2014 and she almost defeated Sharapova in the final. She can win it this year (as long as she avoids Lucic-Baroni and as long as it doesn't rain and Stosur can hit the ball hard ;))
Cibulkova could be one to watch. Made the RG SF in 2009 and QF in 2012, reached the Premier Mandatory Madrid clay final last year.
Stosur. Yep, crazy I know given her form. But she's always a clay threat. RG SF in 2009, 2012 and 2016. Final in 2010. Madrid SF last year. If the surface is anything like last year with the rain, she could blitz the field.
Svitolina- RG QF in 2015 plus 4R in 2016 where she lost to Serena. Won RG juniors in 2010. Good record against top players. Has a habit of beating top players and then losing though.
Kuznetsova- won the title in 2009, final in 2006, SF in 2008, QF in 2007, 2011, 2013 and 2014. Has regained her form in the past 18 months, top 10 player. Definite threat.
Safarova- finalist in 2015. Poor form and bad injuries since then but you never know. Could make an appearance.
Bacsinszky- SF in 2015, QF in 2016. Unfortunately has had injuries as of late so her form is off.

Then there's a bunch of players who are typically crap on clay so it's hard to know with them
Konta- never passed the 1R
Kerber- lost 1R last year, 3R twice before that. Just one RG QF.
Pliskova- horrendous form at slams, only made the 2R.
Wozniacki- hasn't gone past the 3R since 2010. Hasn't done much at the big clay events (Madrid and Rome) since 2011.

And then there's always Kvitova. SF in 2012. Her form in Madrid in 2015 was some of the best tennis i've seen, some of the best i've seen. Unsure if she'll even play though, she'd be one of my top picks if it wasn't for the stabbing.
I think Stosur has the same chance of winning that I do of becoming the Ohanian's new nanny. But I like your other picks. I'd LOVE Bacsinszky to win the whole thing, but, as you wrote, injuries/off-form. I love her game when she's on, but, like Sigemund das Sea Monster, everything has to be working for them to win. If Sharapova doesn't play quallies, goes straight into the main draw, she'll make it to the final, even though I expect a lot of upsets. Look for Squeaky Ostapenko, and Kasatkina to kick some A. I like the new chick who won Biel, too. And Pliscova's clone. ;^)B
