Week after a slam but still two events. Tokyo & Quebec.

This is the Tokyo International, not the Premier one which is next week. This is the Japan Open which used to be in Osaka.

Tokyo seeds are: Mladenovic, Zhang, Mertens, Kristyna Pliskova, Stosur, Osaka, Riske and Putintseva.
WC has been given to Kimiko Date which will be her final tournament before her 2nd (and probably last) retirement.

This tournament also marks the return of Stosur who hadn't played since she got a stress fracture on her wrist during her 4R French Open loss to the eventual champ Ostapenko. Great to see her back but her ranking is now down to #49 in the world. She has no points to defend for the rest of the year though.

Quebec seeds are: Safarova, Dodin, Babos, Tatjana Maria, Lepchenko, Brady, Van Uytvanck & Golubic.
A WC has been given to Aussie Destanee Aiva who had a great start to 2017 as a then 16 year old where she qualified for Premier Brisbane and won her 1R over Mattek Sands. Come Monday she will be the youngest player inside the top 150.

These two tournaments won't get much attention but i'm just excited that Stosur is back! And that Aiava will be playing another main draw.

Also, in other news Vera Zvonareva is back with a bang. Into the 125k final in Dalian. Great to see her back, she came back earlier in the year playing ITF qualifying but this will give her quite a few ranking points so we'll see her at bigger tournaments :D

    Tokyo:

4th seed Kr Pliskova won into the 2R as did 3rd seed Mertens, 7th seed Riske, Cepelova, Wang and Han.

Stosur is playing in a couple of hours :D

    In Quebec:

3rd seed Babos gets through as does Broady over WC Aiava in 3 sets. Erakovic and Min are also through and Dolehide wins the all qualifier battle.

There's an interesting match between former doubles partners and dual slam champs Hradecka/Hlavackova. The pair made 6 slam finals winning 2 and also won silver in London and came 4th in Rio last year. Hlavackova now plays with Babos whilst Hradecka plays with Siniakova and the pair just made the USO Final in doubles.

Kimiko Date's career has come to another end. With an unfortunate scoreline loss of 6-0 6-0. Played in front of her home crowd. What an amazing career she's had though with some seriously impressive longevity.

Are you sure that she is not going to return from retirement?

Does Krunic hate Kimiko Date or the japanese for some reason? I mean most people in her position would give a game in each set ...

Possibly but she announced this is the end of her 2nd comeback. Would be odd to retire again knowing full well you'll be back.

Nah she was super sweet. Bowed to her at the net and then a big embrace.

At the ceremony where the organizers presented Kimiko with something, Krunic had quickly written this on her own shirt.

Also i'm super pissed. I had yesterday off which was when Stosur was meant to make her comeback from injury after 3 months off. But Tokyo got mostly rained out so she didn't get to play. And I see they've scheduled her for today but much earlier so I won't be able to watch! Hopefully she is able to win. Has a chance at winning this tournament if she is fit and well like she was before the injury. She had just won a title and made the French 4R before this injury knocked her down. Rough luck, she was really turning her crumby year around. Out of the top 40 now so needs some wins!

Nice gesture but maybe even nicer if she had at least allowed her a game or 2! ;)

5th seeded Stosur loses in 3. Tough loss but i'm glad she's back. She's on the entry list for Guangzhou next week and she'll be the 5th seed.

Top seed Mladenovic also lost, in straight sets to Jana Fett. Mladenovic is now on a 6 match losing streak and hasn't won a single set in any of those losses. Her last win came over Tatjana Maria in Washington.

6th seed Osaka was thrashed 6-3 6-0 by fellow Japanese player Kurumi Nara. She's defending her finalist points at the Premier Tokyo even next week (305 points). That'll see her fall from about #44 to #63.

7th seed Riske also bowed out. Lost to Kimiko's slayer Krunic.

4th seed Kristyna Pliskova lost in the 2nd round to Japanese qualifier Kato.

Not a great time to be seeded. 1st, 4th, 5th, 6th and 7th seeds already all out.

What have we done to Mladenovic? She can't seem to win a match these days...

But Lucie started strong. That's what really matters.

Probably. She had a string of interesting results going on before RG (including that infamous match against Sharapova), which made her quite confident on her chances of winning the whole thing. I guess the blow of falling to do so hit her pretty hard.

@NaomiKonjuhPotapova, that new National album really is something. Nobody Else Will be There has to be one of this year's best songs.
Oh and I've just achieved the pinnacle of a respectable melomaniac. I'm on a Japandroids music video! Well, I don't exactly appear on it, but I'm on the venue that is filmed with a drone, just by the trees.

Pliskova has split with coach Kotyza. They lasted 10 months, a period where Pliskova got to number 1. She's had a meh few months but this is a bit of a shock.

Anyway, could be the fact that all the attention was on her after knocking out the defending champ Muguruza at the French Open and then Garbine brought the shade with the "I heard she speaks like 25 languages or so". Since then Muguruza has won a slam, Premier 5 title and gotten to #1 whilst Mladenovic has failed in comparison.

Lucie has a good change to win her first 2017 WTA title, but she'll have to play against Babos in the semis, who defeated her in Budapest earlier this year (the only final she's achieved up until this point). Hoping she pulls it off.

I hope she pulls it off but I'm not too optimistic.
When Babos is playing well she can blow her opponents off the court.
I haven't seen Lucie playing this week though.
She fell a bit flat against Vandeweghe at the Open, which was disappointing considering her previous matches.
I hope her form is improving steadily, I've always felt like she was meant to win more titles than she actually does.

I used to love Japandroids. But back then when they launch Post-Nothing. I don't follow them that much.
I haven't yet listened to whole album but already humming Day I Die. Definitely will listen to Nobody Else WIll be! Pretty good year this year. Next year lines up for music fest must be awesome. I'm planning to watch FJM next Jan!

Timea Babos finally produces some good result. But there's no guarantee yet she's gonna beat Van U.

Zarina Diyas wins the all qualifier final against Miyu Kato in Tokyo.

In crazy circumstances, both players couldn't play qualifying for next weeks Premier Tokyo Open because they were playing in the final of the International Japan Open (also in Tokyo). Neither got a special exempt (not sure if WTA has this or not) or a wildcard.

Rough, but good money and points for making the final/winning.

Yep nice win / match for Zarina against Kato.

Never seen Kato before, she's a shortie but man, talking about footwork and speed !!!

Love Zarina, and her Eurasian looks, she's definitely a WTA top 20 hottie in my books.....In her bio, only her mum is mentioned...may be her dad passed away or they split really early..

On a side note I like the WTA on court coaching ( once allowed per set I assume ), you can hear the coach point of view and new play tactic..

Eh, it would've been so much better if you were actually wrong this time... At least, the title went for someone new. Can't be mad at that.
I haven't seen anything too. I was just merely following the results and seeing some highlights. I'll have to live vicariously through people over here for the next two months, as my final exam looms large.
That match against Vandeweghe was even more disappointing, because, in the previous round against Nara, she actually stopped dropping sets for no reason. One would think that she was getting on the zone, but it never really works that way with Lucie, right? She has the tools to do more, to achieve more, but she does seem to lack belief. It is what it is. But she has achieved great success in doubles, which is pretty satisfactory at the end of the day.

You've to listen Celebration Rock. That album has the uncanny ability of making complete strangers look like longtime acquaintances at the gigs. It's actually fascinating to see. The new one isn't as good, as it seems too polished at times.
Ah ah ah! Yes, they will. And with Björk releasing a new album out of the blue (with Arca producing!), it's looking even more promising.
I'm going to see him in November. Dude is hypnotic as hell performing. I'm curious to see how will he do it with such a dense record.
