Tsurenko gives Niculescu a walkover into the Hobart final. I guess Lesia thinks she has what it takes to beat Kerber and would rather prep for the slam and skip a chance at her 3rd career final.

Niculescu into her 8th career final. She's won 3. Her most recent final was in Luxembourg in October last year where she thrashed Kvitova 6-4 6-0.
Monica is very much a journeywoman on tour but has a couple top 10 wins and has reached the 4R of a slam twice and made many more 3R's.

She'll face either 21 year old qualifier Mertens or 20 year old qualifier Fett. Neither of the pair have reached a WTA singles final.

That's why Strycova is such a damn good example. She played every minute of every match this week.

Angie better demolish Tsurenko for being a little b*tch.

Crucial time for Konta to win points as she's defending SF points at the Aus Open. She's now firmly in the top 10, moving up to 9th with 4055 points, Keys is 8th with 4137 points.

Even if she lost 1R at the AO, she'd only fall (as it stands) 1 or 2 spots.
There's a big gap between the top 9 and the rest.

Poor Aga,her serve and forehand were completely exploited by Konta. Credit to Konta's coach, did his homework and Konta stuck to the plan and executed well.
Konta clearly learnt from her previous defeats to Bouchard and Radwanska. Promising. But, Konta is clearly one of the brighter tennis players, both off and on the court. Maturing well.

SCREAMING! (quietly as I'm at work)

Haven't been able to watch a single match yet due to work. Is Jo in as good form as these scorelines suggest?

Quote from Aga after the match: "I can't remember playing someone like this on that level, that consistent for the whole match," Radwanska said. "I couldn't really say that I did something wrong. She was just playing amazing tennis and was aggressive from the first shot."

TBF, Ostapenko had a viral illness in Auckland. I know this is Hobart, but it's not unusual for people to go down like that given the close quarters people exist in at tournaments.

Just seems kinda far fetched for her to miss out on a chance for a rare WTA final for what is a fairly low probability of beating Kerber. Konta and Radwanska certainly finished out their tourneys, and they surely plan to stick around at AO for quite a few more rounds than Tsurenko.

well damn!

Let's hope this form continues to AO... I'd love her to at least defend her SF points. She has a fairly tough draw IMO - Osaka could be dangerous in 2R, and of course Serena in her quarter. #GoJoKo

Mertens rolled up Niculescu to win Hobart. That $43K payday & a title on her resume will take the sting out of missing qualies.
I want to say sucked in to Vickery for withdrawing from her match to head to the AO where she lost 1R but Mertens wanted out as well. Ah well, cracked the top 100. Good for her.
