I thought only Fed fans were using age as an "excuse" ...

Same as with Federer, we can't forget that Djokovic is no longer in the prime age for a tennis player, and he is likely to have some lapses in some matches, just as Fed had around this age. This was only one match, but even if Novak did start to lose to Zverev (or someone else) more often, it does not mean that he would have lost to them in their prime.

Anyway, this shouldn't be about Novak. Well done to Sascha. He has won three MS and a WTF now, which is a lot more than anyone else currently under the age of 30. Hopefully he will start to make a move at the slams now under Lendl's tutelage.

Zverev is the best I've seen. I don't think Djokovic's age can be an excuse. This is the best he's ever played in his career and he didn't win a set in the final. Diamond Age Initiated.

It's OVER.

Until the AO 2019 which Djokovic will win.

That's true about the wind, but here the obvious factor is that he played a night match on both of the two days prior to this final. He was inexplicably poor in the 2016 final, too, because of short turnaround.

[By the way, I've always thought it was a real shame about the wind in 2012, after he played so well in the quarter-final against Del Potro - one of his best-ever US Open performances. In fact, I think it might be his best-ever US Open match].

Look, it could be that Djokovic is going to age rapidly in 2019. But this one result is very weak evidence that that is likely, right? And that's all I was responding to from the previous poster.
That's not really an excuse for a ~25 year old Djokovic - playing 3 sets (short ones at that)
Djoko was losing badly to ferrer in windy conditions. Then next day conditions calmed down and he went handily.

Djoko is very agile/flexible, but footwork is not the greatest. Hence the struggling in windy conditions. Don't think its a shame at all.

Murray had a much much tougher SF than djoko in 2016 YEC.
He was just more determined and played a clearly better match than djoko did in 2016 final.
Djoko just didn't have the confidence/consistency he had earlier in the 2nd half of 2016. And Murray took it to him.

For this year, its not just this one result though -- Djoko lost to Khachanov in the Paris final just a couple of weeks before.

Of course its not conclusive , but it sure as hell shuts up the OMG, Djoko is as good as he was before, will win the CYGS in 2019 bandwagon.

He's taller, bigger AND stronger. Zverev is a new breed of athlete. Tennis hasn't seen a beast like this before who is as tall as Robert Wadlow but as agile as Russell Westbrook.

We can't see it now but give it a few years and we'll be asking how Zverev would do in the NBA.
As agile as Westbrook? Are you not well? Also height and size are not a talent.

He was gassed in this match in that second set, it was really strange considering how stout he's looked for most of the second half of the year.
The Novak fans think Fed is the poster boy of how a tennis player ages since he bagged slams at 35 and 36. That is a once-in-history anomaly.

This year, Novak played few matches until July because he was losing early in tournaments but he was visibly gassed both in Paris and today. If he's losing steam at 31 at the end of a season, he will not be winning slams at 35 or 36, but non-Novak fans knew that already.

He's got the youth, the long hair. He is a younger man born into a more advanced state of civilisation. The only reason he won't win nearly as many slams as Djokovic will be the general comperition being vastly superior over the next 10 years as compared to the previous 10.

Let's just wait before reaching any conclusion. Zverev hasn't shown anything that makes me think he's better than 2011/2015 Djokovic or even 2012-2014 Djokovic. It's not even sure that he's better than 2018 Djokovic.

Did anyone catch what Robbie Koenig blurted out at 5-3 15-0 in the second? I rewound it five times and was convinced it was “THAT’S A LINDA RONSTADT!”

Or was it “That’s a Lendl wrong step!”

Dude Djokovic lost 5 games against Zverev a couple of days ago.
What do you say now? :)

Listen, I get that predictions are fun etc. but I never predict any results because I can never consciously rule out even a remote possibility (which always exists) of the other player winning, so I stay away from it. Although I might as well admit that I had a feeling Zed would beat both (Federer and Djokovic) and win WTF but I had no intention of jinxing my feeling by predicting it.

Does he ever?!!:giggle:

Men who wear gold chains tend to win 5 Formula 1 WDChampionships which is the equivalent of being YE#1 5 times.

Zverev will therefore do similarly, as long as he never abandons his gold chains.

I want to make it clear that I'm not saying Zverev will retire, take up motor racing and win 5 Formula 1 WDCs... I'm err..

... saying that he is DESTINED to produce a similar result in tennis.

And so it was written.

Djokovics forehand went to crap hence netting uncharacteristically.

His shoulder was likely playing up and it took him out of concentration.

It's pretty hard to deny when we saw him win against zverev just a few matches prior.

I really want Novak to tie the record although I also really like Sasha. His hair is looking sexier than ever :p
Overall, it’s a drool-drool final for me.
It was a tough one, no doubt. I wanted Nole to tie the record as well but I also knew it was very important for Sasaha to win this title.

Nole might get another chance in the next two years or so.

Finding excuses for losses because of age, injuries or illness is not for Novak fans. We leave that to other fanbases. I'm done talking about it. Congrats to Sascha.
Lmao please there is nothing wrong with pointing out that with age comes inconsistencies rme at that dig st other fanbases trust me I've seen plenty of nole fans dish out excuses in the past. This joker than thou attitude is hilarious

Lets keep in mind, this is Djokovic's court. He has won the tournament a record four straight times here, he loves the conditions and is playing well.

If this is the diamond age, well, remember that diamonds are formed under extreme pressure, and you can bet that Djokovic will be bringing the pressure tomorrow.

Zverev will have to play even better IMO to win this, can be done, but it will need to be a very special performance.
Oh Hitman!

Diamonds are indeed formed. :p

well, it had to happen on day ( @Meles warned us about it 15 years ago, after all)

a next gen guy had to win a big tournament... i wish it was another player (tsitsipas, shapovalov, khachanov, chung, etc.), but it's done.

djokovic's last 3 losses have been against zverev, khachanov and tsitsipas... can it still be a coincidence ?
(what's happening to me ?... i feel like i'm possessed by @Meles' spirit !)

When every loss is blamed on a player being too old then yea there is something wrong with that. Like I said earlier, I'm done talking about it.

Absolutely. There are some (many) deplorable kunts in the Novak fanbase. A bunch of kids who need to seriously get rekt. But there's more of them in the Federer camp because he has more fans.

In the end, Zverev's performance didn't even have to be that special to get the job done.
That was the shocking part. It was just so plain and simple - nothing special was needed. I mean it would have been very hard to predict this result and yet, it'd happened.

I was worried after yesterday and wondered if Sasha would recover mentally after the drama but it seems Lendl did do a great coaching job there. I am very familiar with Lendl' coaching as a lot of us Andy fans would follow him, so sort of knew he'd make Sasha think straight and keep the eyes on the prize rather than the unfortunate event.

It's amazing the kind of impact a coach can have on the player.
