Welcome to the next event in our 2018 ATP Sudden Death League season:

Shanghai Rolex Masters (China)
7 - 14 October, 2017
Hard Court

RULES (Masters 1000 Event):

1. You pick one player who you think is going to win. It's a knock out-system: if the player you picked wins, you're through to the next round. If he loses, you're out.

2. Prior to the Round of 16, you have to pick one player per day (day 1 - monday, day 2 - tuesday and day 3 - wednesday). In the R16, quarters, semis and finals you pick one player per round. Day 1 is a Combined Sunday/Monday.

3. You can pick a player only ONCE. Obviously it's important to make smart choices in order to get far. If you have no picks remaining, you're eliminated from the competition.

4. You can't pick a player from a match that has started already.

5. You cannot advance to the next round via a walkover since it is hard to know exactly when someone announced they were pulling out HOWEVER this rule does not apply once you reach the semifinals

6. Since you can no longer win a match by a walkover it is highly advised that you make a back-up pick to your main pick - when listing your picks make sure you specify which is your back-up.

7. If the player you picked retires during the match, you're out. If he retires before the match, your back-up pick will be used unless you change your pick before your back up match begins.

8. If the opponent of the person you picked withdraws and is replaced by a lucky loser your original pick will stand unless you specifically change it. (Usual caveat with this rule and the consideration of BU applies.)

9. NEVER edit your pick. If you want to change your pick, please quote your old pick and choose a new player. Edited posts will not be taken into consideration.

RACE TO LONDON QUALIFICATION ZONE:

Live Race to London viewable HERE

Still 34 people mathematically in contention for a Top 8 WTF Bonus spot as we head into Shanghai, Vienna/Basel and Paris.
I can probably seal the first spot sometime during this tournament with a Race lead of over 2,500 pts over #9 (maximum of 3,000 pts up for grabs prior to London). We will see how this develops over the course of next week.

Day 1: Chilling with a glass of CHARDonnaY

B/u: A Man Named KAREN

There are 4 matches on Sunday:

Chardy vs Marterer

Khachanov vs Johnson

Jarry vs M Zverev

Sock vs Gojowczyk

What does the second bolded rule mean?
Do I just play normally like picking round by round?
It means you have to pick from the matches played on the given day(s). stringertom listed the matches played on Sunday, but if you don't like any of the choices you can wait to pick from the matches played on Monday as Day 1 includes both Sunday and Monday. For Day 2 you have to pick a winner from the matches played on Tuesday, for Day 3 a winner from the matches played on Wednesday.

Isn't that the same thing as playing it round by round?

So why is there 3 days when there is only R64 (Round 1) and R32 (Round 2) then third round is R16?

Or is the OP trying to split up the first round into two picks?

OK so I think I understand picking from Sun/Mon, Tues, then Wed but what is the purpose of doing this? Doesn't this mean we are playing an extra round like a R128?

All it means it you needs to check the OOP each day for the first few days. Picking my day in the beginning adds an extra challenge to the masters which spread the first 2 rounds over several days in a different structure from other tournaments. Plus given there are more points on offer then a 500 tournament having an extra pick adds to the difficulty...

Hence I've won like 13 tournaments or something in this game but I have never actually won a masters shield.

Pretty much what the others have said so far
To add to this, this is the exact pick structure you need to follow for Masters tournaments:
Day 1: Make 1 pick either from a Sunday match or a Monday match
Day 2: Tuesday
Day 3: Wednesday
Day 4 = Round of 16
Day 5 = QF
Day 6 = SF
Day 7 = Final
Need to separate it from the 500 and 250 events by adding an extra layer of picks/difficulty, and for the 8.5 years the game has been running this "Pick by day" format seems to have stuck for this level of tournament.

It will be interesting to see if Raonic takes most of us out. Getting through the first round of a Masters should be worth about 500 points. Second round about 5 points.
