Tiger Tim in the house letting the power of Henmania run wild through Edmund's body tonight. That could be what makes the difference, Jack.

Apparently, Grigor Dimitrov is 112th out of the 128 players at this Australian Open based on second serve points won

Sits at only 39%.

That's abysmal.

Edmund defeats 3rd seed Dimitrov.

Means for the first time since Wimbledon 2008 that there will be an unseeded semifinalist.

That slam it was actually two unseeded SFists (Safin and Schuttler), it'll also be two this time round with Edmund AND Chung/Sandgren.

I think that Chung has the best chance at the title of the non-Fedal players remaining. If he can play like he did against Djoko.

Story to follow. That's no typo. Mischa Zverev getting docked $45,000. Wait till his union gets a load of....oh, wait.

Jon Wertheim added,

Petra Philippsen @PPhilippsen
Mischa Zverev has been fined $45.000 for his performance in the 1st rd of the #AusOpen He had fever and played with painkillers & there was a chance he'd feel better. It was not like he couldn't walk on court. So if the ITF wants to make a point with the new rule, it's not him.

Tennys Sandgren deletes tweets after denying far-right sympathies at Australian Open

  • US player follows a number of ‘alt-right’ figures on Twitter
  • Says far-right views clash with his Christian beliefs

Tue 23 Jan 2018

Tennys Sandgren, the last remaining American in the Australian Open men’s singles draw, has deleted years-worth of tweets after denying he is an alt-right sympathiser.

The 26-year-old reached the quarter-finals of the tournament after an upset victory over the No5 seed, Dominic Thiem, on Monday but questions over his political views have swirled over the weekend and he was challenged at a post-match press conference.

Since facing the media, posts on his Twitter feed since July 2014 have been wiped.

Earlier this month, Sandgren retweeted a video by Nicholas Fuentes, a Boston University student who received death threats after attending the white supremacist rally in Charlottesville last year. Sandgren also follows a number of controversial figures on Twitter, including Tommy Robinson the former leader of the far-right English Defence League, and Dan Roodt a South African once described by John Oliver as a purveyor of “some of the finest examples of vintage bigotry”. Sandgren also described “Pizzagate”, a conspiracy theory linking Hillary Clinton to a paedophile ring as “sickening and the collective evidence is too much to ignore”.

Sandgren was challenged over his views by a reporter after his victory over Thiem. “Look, who you follow on Twitter I feel doesn’t matter even a little bit,” he said. “What information you see doesn’t dictate what you think or believe. I think it’s crazy to think that. I think it’s crazy to assume that. To say, well, he’s following X person, so he believes all the things that this person believes, I think it’s ridiculous. I think that’s ridiculous.”

Sandgren has also debated racial injustice in America with fellow tennis player James Blake on Twitter. During the exchange he denied systemic racism exists in the US because the country elected a black president.

The world No97 also denied he supported far-right theories. “No. No, I don’t. I find some of the content interesting, but no I don’t. Not at all,” Sandgren said. “As a firm Christian, I don’t support things like that. I support Christ and following Him and that’s what I support.”

dude is effed up, now will try and clean up his image

Put it this way, now that the guy is famous, he'll be more exposed to the world and perhaps experience itself will change his perspective of things. Not implying that Sandgren necessarily is a racist as such, but you'll find that many close-minded people with racist/homophobic views have such views precisely because they just never interacted enough with the outside world and forms wrong perceptions/prejudice themselves.

It would be way more shocking than last year. We know what Federer's capable of, but this Chung guy is a complete unknown.
I think he will lose in the QF/SF and I would bet money on the fact that he cannot beat Fed or Nadal. There are several deficiencies in the Korean's game - not least his service.
Novak was not 100% and the match was close with Chung. Tennis is a game of inches. Had Djokovic been a little healthier (or not coming after a long layoff) he would have probably won each of those sets that he lost. In other words, a tight straight sets victory.

As much as I like Chung, he is likely to be the type of player who has a fairy tale tournament, not as winner but a spoiler. But then disappears completely. In short: The youngster is not likely to be a future top player or a slam champion.

I didn't see the whole Chung-Djokovic match, but I watched highlights and that (your 1st paragraph) was very much the impression I got. He played really well, but a lot of the points he controlled he would not have controlled against a healthy Djokovic. If you get an edge which gives you just a *small* advantage on each rally, it can turn a straight set loss into a straight set win. Instead of winning 49% of points, you win 51%, and that could be enough.

Just imagine. If he was praising Fidel Castro and spouting far left platitudes like Colin Kaepernick the media would be in his corner.

Bottom line is that Cilic has the game if he's on, Edmund is enjoyable to watch, if Berdych can beat Federer he has a real shot at his first slam (because Fed = his kryptonite and he's been so good against the field for so long, a few exceptions not really counting IMHO), Chung has a creative and interesting game, and I don't know anything about Sandgren but he has played some nice tennis this week. What's wrong with the last 6?

Don't we want new players to show up? I mean, it's not like people they played choked. They've all played quite well to this point.

This is reminding me of the 2014 US Open a little bit. I was confident Federer would win when Djokovic went out and then Marin came in and blasted him off the court. Berdych and Cilic are both capable of blowing an older Federer off the court if they are on.

Why do people act there's something wrong with that part? Yes, racism still exists and probably will be forever, but systemic? Comon, such an exaggeration. Systemic racism was from 1800-1970something. And his argument about a black president is actually quite a good one.
