If Mladenovic makes it to Keys I will be shocked, and the way she has been playing Keys should make mince meat out of her.

As for Bencic vs Venus...If Venus is playing well she will win hands down. Bencic has done well in recent months but in terms of game Venus should win.

Gorges....I would like to see her do well and she did win Auckland, so maybe she could go deep. She does have a nice winning streak going to. She always seems to do well in Auckland, at least the last few years...but then she has done poorly at the AO following those strong performances. I'm not sure what to thing about her.

Yes, Venus SHOULD win, and has never lost to her, but I'm nervous lol. Getting 2014 vibes.....

Ostapenko v Schiavone to kick the tournament off on RLA on Monday, erm ok.....
Not too many other first round matches between two Slam winners, so RLA makes sense. Neither are particularly bankable Slam winners though so they've stuck them on first while the crowds are still trickling in.

Bencic is a good first test for Venus. If Venus is playing well, she should win. If she isn't up to beating Bencic, no draw will be of any good.

Got a bad feeling about this AO though with Pova walking out with the trophy that was just ridiculous, and then the suspension thing getting spun as "her time off" was worse.

Usually AO is my favourite slam since the players have a new start to their season and had a bit of time off to recover, USO is the worst in that case.

Top half is loaded with Pliskova, Halep, Sharapova, Konta, Muguruza or Kerber

Bottom half meanwhile has Venus, Goerges, Sloane, Svitolina, Ostapenko, Domi, Coco, Woz.

Would have picked Kerber or Halep to reach the final, maybe win it, until I saw this. Mugu pulled out of Sydney with right thigh injury. Recovered?

Svitolina or Woz for bottom half. Venus perhaps a 3rd choice. Ostapenko losing too many early rounds. Can she raise for level for a major again?

@SeeingDusk

Would love to see her go deep at AO. Fixed her serve yet? Not gonna happen for her unless she does. Her 1st AO, ain't it?

EDIT:

Bellis has a good chance of getting past Bertens and Gibbs. Will have to see after that (C Woz in R3?). Bertens is seeded #30 but Bellis prevailed in their last meeting (2017). They are currently 1-1 in h2h play. Gibbs gets to play a qualifier in R1. Nicole could beat CiCi in R2 but it seems doubtful. No h2h for these two but CiCi has fared better than Nicole in the past year. CiCi inside the top 50 while Nicole is outside the top 100.

Way to go Marta! First 15 years old to compete in main draw GS for years and earn it from Quallies thanks to new WTA rule that allow past Junior GS 14 and above for a QWC.

Gosh, I haven't been this unknowledgeable about WTA's current state of affairs in a long time... I only know Kerber, Görges and Svitolina are looking promising, but I actually haven't seen any of them play up until this point (damn adult life, with 12h work shifts to do). Hoping to see Aga, Lucie or Bencic go far or even win the whole thing (a long shot, I know) and, most of all, hoping to catch some matches live.

Put 10 names in a hat and pick one. I bet if you changed up the draws, the final 16 would be 75% to 87.5% different each time (12 out of 16 or 14 out of 16 different).

This is a tour on which Mladenovic can lose for the 15th time in a row and still get in the top 10 if players in front of her lose early.

So hard to choose..
I've gone with Svitolina again - as good a guess as any. It really is sooooooo open isn't it..
I'm being Ostapenko Vs Schiavoni but will look to see what else takes my fancy..

Ostapenko & gorgeous Goerges on the DirecTV extra channels for me.
A couple more unforced by Schiavone (in a back brace..) and I'm getting an eyeful of Georges Goerges myself.

Edit: second game, thus far a bunch of unforced, a whiff, and two doubles by Schiavone. Time to find another match for a bit. :)

Some really good play by this Kenin lady. Cool. Couple easy UE as well, but overall very solid for a 19yo against the world number 12!

And that's all she wrote. Sofia Kenin loses 6-4 6-4 to Goerges. Still, very good effort, I think we'll see quite a bit more of her.

In other news, gorgeous Goerges through to the second round!

Good points. I'm with Bellis on this journey. Are you watching the sloane and makarova matches? thought it was straight forward with them both leading comfortably. up a set and a break, only to now down 1 break each in the final set. :O

After a long struggle Bertens wins a 2nd game. Her serve action actually looks inferior to the Bellis serve. But still seeing a bit of a hitch in CiCi's serve in the 7th game.
