I guess no win can be taken for granted anymore. I get it.
He has always been emotional. I'd like to think he's particularly more appreciative, and therefore emotional, about whatever time he has left in the sport. I've always been touched by the poem 'To An Athlete Dying Young.' Fed has to decide how much of his decline he is willing to exhibit. It can't be an easy realization, and wins like this, in his hometown, are understandably bittersweet.

He's special, no doubt about it.

His first title past his 37th birthday.

He will play and win. And then he'll win the WTF and end the year at no 1 because Nadal and Djokovic are gonna lose early in both.
Do you have a time machine dialed back to 2008 or ‘09? ;) Nadal won’t be a factor but Roger’s not beating Novak in his current form.

It would be a perfect moment to announce retirement at his home tournament.

Have you ever watched him play live? I recall you live in Texas, but got into tennis in 2008? They were in Houston for the masters cup in 03 and 04.

Federer won in Basel, Anderson in Vienna. Perhaps in the near time will take place rematch this year's Wimbledon QF.

I always like Fed's chances better when he is battle-tested.

Don't know about you guys but when I was playing seriously, I often felt like my best tennis was played while fatigued and against the odds.

I'd be more worried about this match if his road here had been easy.

Well, my good feelings were justified.

I also think that if Fed is now willing to reveal that his hand had been bothering him all year...that it's no longer bothering him.

I am greedy.
I prefer a WTF #100 than a Paris-Bercy #100, but I know I can’t be so demanding.
Ehh that’s almost the opposite of demanding. If he gets the Paris #100 it means he can still win the WTF afterwards but you prefer him to not win a m1000 title just so the hundredth title can be at the WTF.. i have to disagree. Ending the season with a winning streak of 3 tournaments would be amazing (now that’s demanding;))

Was their any hints that this was a problem and what it stemmed from?

Assuming we believe him...yes, there were hints. His frustration and anger at Halle and Wimbledon being the biggest.

I noticed something was bothering him then, and I knew it must have something to do with physical readiness. At the time I figured he'd gotten upset with himself for playing Halle and knowing it was going to hurt him at Wimbledon.

Now it looks like it might well have been regret and resignation knowing that it would be hard for him to get another Wimbledon trophy with his hand all jacked up.

I also have a feeling that it could have been one of those stupid self-inflicted injuries. I thought the same (and still do) about his post-AO knee injury. I don't know precisely what happened but an athlete of his level does not 'slip while giving his daughter a bath'.

Fed has always been an emotional, temperamental player. I think there is a lot of frustration and anger behind the scenes that we don't get to see, and I think sometimes that anger boils over and he hurts himself.

I broke 2 bones in 2015...a foot and then a hand. Both were self-inflicted, kicking and punching things out of frustration with my lot in life. And I cooked up equally stupid stories to explain them away.

Yes, I'm sure he hurts himself. /sarcasm.

Do you really buy that one of the best athletes to ever walk the earth required knee surgery from a child-bathing accident?

The post-AO knee thing has another explanation that he doesn't want the world to know. There are other possible explanations, one of my more charitable ones was that he went out to train immediately after the loss and pushed himself too hard.

I just don't believe the "I slipped while bathing my kid and required surgery," not for a second. It sounded like total BS at the time and we know there is always more to the story.

I don't disbelieve it, but I'm open to alternative suggestions. Anyone who has kids knows things happen. He only got surgery bc he's an athlete, it's not like he couldn't walk.

I'm skeptical about the bath tub thing too, but the last thing I think is that he goes around punching walls and breaking his hand or anything like that. It doesn't mesh with his personality to me. Not that there's any way to know for sure based on anything concrete, but he doesn't seem the raging anger type. He's too Swiss for that. ;)

At the time and still I think it was an injury related to wear and tear because he's old and he was too proud to admit it.

I do NOT for a second believe he walks around punching/kicking walls. Can you imagine Mirka putting up with that behavior?

No I can't. The idea is so ridiculous it shouldn't even be mentioned as a possibility IMO. I'd say what I really thought of inflicting self harm on yourself, but I can't do it without potentially being insulting so I'll leave it here.

Mirka is a tough lady so... kinda? As in, she won't tolerate it but she can handle it.
