Really surprises me that Thiem isn't playing this week.

week off/500/1k/week off/500/1k isn't that tough of a schedule especially if you're no guarantee to go deep in every tournament

Add Tomic to main draw as SE with his win today. He was listed as last direct acceptance into qualies at Beijing but now is pulled from that draw.

The ATP/WTA Live website posted the Beijing qualies draw with Tomic's name in the small box at the bottom as "last direct acceptance." He is not in the draw so he's getting the MD SE he is entitled to.
Wow. The app you mean. I can see qualifier draw there, but nowhere else really. Just learned how to capture from my phone so updating OP with qualifier draw.

Draw is out and, as @Aussie Darcy predicted, the one SE goes to Sousa and not Tomic. I guess Bernie needs to max out today and Sunday because he's now off next week. Fooled me by trimming him out of qualies and not extending an SE. Learn something every day.

Ankle injury forces Brit to withdraw from China Open

Former World No. 1 Andy Murray has withdrawn from next week's China Open due to an ankle injury.
The 2016 champion, who reached the Shenzhen Open quarter-finals,
will end his season after previously announcing his plans for the Beijing event to be his final tournament of the year.

Does this mean andy is done as a force in tennis @Mainad ? Can he recover @Mainad ?

Cheers

Higher ranked players got the SEs this week, Fritz in Tokyo as well. I think those are solely determined by ranking.

1R Zedraffe vs RBA.
I'd like to lodge a formal draw rigging complaint because other than an off RBA, Zedrot's entire half is a joke unless someone wants to stick up for Dimitrough (who looked promising at Laver Cup).

Delpo on the other hand despite the forecasts having him a firm favorite with a 50% chance of making the final, really does have a potentially rough draw:
ARV - has been bad for a while, but his last match was pretty good
Khach - the beginning of the end for Nadal at the US Open (could be Querrey)
Coric - if Borna shows should be a great match
Fognini - some may laugh, but Fog looks poised to win Chengdu and in dominant form much like Las Cabos where he thrashed Delpo in the final.
Zedrot - who has a joke draw and should be much fresher than poor old Del Possum

Overall Beijing has a much weaker, less interesting draw than Tokyo, but with any luck this means the higher seeds will make the weekend.;)

One of those times when I wish I would’ve been wrong. He won a match in Tokyo last year funnily enough against Sousa so he had 45 points to defend next week so he needs to win that Chengdu final to get some more points otherwise he might be back out of the top 100 as soon as he got in.

He’s back in the top 100 in the live rankings but then next week he’ll lose 45 points which will push him back out of the top 100 (unless he wins the title which will give him 100 more points anyway).

Foggy is in Chengdu, not Shenzhen. His week to week levels are not predictable. If he beats Tomic tomorrow, WATLYNM Lodge can expect a return visit. Some of these qualifiers he might face look primed for the challenge.

Lopez v Coric kicks things off and two hours later on Lotus Court we have Khach v Querrey. Perhaps not the best, but two of the better first round matches at the China Open. Ultimate tennis match prediction engine favors Coric heavily with 67% chance of winning and Khach strongly with 62%. Bookies concur.

The thing about money is it makes you do things you don't wanna do.

I thought the three of them look pretty smart in those costumes. I don’t know where you got the feeling that they don’t like themselves dressed like that just for a tournament party or some photo shoots. Its not even a full on men’s traditional gown. I’m sure these players have no problem showing a bit of courtesy to the host country

Dimitrov looking good in win over Sandgren. He always does well at the end of the season / indoors, so maybe Dimi will be a threat in Beijing.

Sandgren got $25000 as the LL which is about as much as Mmoh earned after winning two challengers and beating ten guys in a row.

I see choking Cilic was in action earlier on. Wins the 1st set quite comfortably and then just as comfortably chokes away the next 2!

Have been keeping on this event, but was in hiding yesterday as was planning on watching one of the Tokyo matches via replay like it was live right before play resumed (don't look at length of match and let it play straight through - match was Med v Diego and it was excellent.)

1. Khach from the pieces I saw looked great winning over Querrey so his 2nd round match with Delpo should be a doozy.:p
2. Coric had match points on Lopez's serve in the 3rd and arguably should have won 2nd set as well. Classic Boric choking when he used up all his challenges and couldn't then contest his own DF. This was right after failing to break in the 3rd and also after Boric was up 40-15 on his own serve. After this he lost nearly every point to go down 7-5 in the 3rd.
3. Rublev looked very good against Sousa, but also I believe the matchup favored Angrey so not certain of his form
4. Zverev good enough to get by RBA today, but might have gotten a niggle on his knee very late in the match (no MTO)

Can't comment on the rest of the field as I did not see enough of their play. The Japan Open has a much better lineup of matches today than Beijing, but Beijing does have Khachanov versus Delpo kicking off the evening session on the Stadium court. Presumably tomorrow will be Fognini vs Rublev which should be excellent as Fabio in top form despite the choke job versus Tomic in the Chengdu final. Bad matches early usually means better matches later in an event and prospective QFs not bad. With luck all the top 4 seeds will come through and then the SFs will be great. Wouldn't mind seeing Rublev replace Fognini (4) or Khach replace Delpo (1) and if Edmund somehow came through in Dimitrough (3) quarter that would be fine. Zedrot's draw is far too easy so surely he won't screw this up.

Only for the second time have I watched the young Chinese home favourite Wu (Yibing, not to be confused with his compatriot Di Wu) in action on the main tour. First time was against Simon in Shanghai last year where he lost in straights.

A good effort in his loss against Jaziri, but the inexperience at this level was tremendously noticeable. Think the commies were saying it's only his sixth match against a top 100 player. He has a lot of power and aggression at his disposal, far more than what I recall from his match last year. Just struggled with consistency and was overly ambitious at times during the match. He liked to hit hard with quite a lot of margin inside the lines fairly often, but Jaziri was dealing with the incoming pace comfortably for the most part, and gave Wu quite a lot of awkward and different looks with the variety he possesses. Frustration settled in and so did the desperation, though he did well to get one of the breaks back late in the 2nd, Jaziri was just a passenger every now and then.

6/4 6/3 to Malek, he plays younger Zverev in the next round. No result could surprise me here tbh....

Dimitrov down a set vs D. Lajovic. Broke for a 2-0 lead in the 2nd, currently battling to hold after going 40-0 up.
